Title: Privacy Policy Display Method?
Post by: lextalionis on October 01, 2009, 02:04:35 PM
Link to my site: http://www.motleypixel.com
SMF version: SMF ver. 1.1.9
TP version: TP ver. 1.0 beta 4
Theme name and version: Black Rain
Browser Name and Version: IE 7.0.5730.10
Mods installed: TPReviews, iFrame, YouTube, Ads Management (all current for SMF 1.1.9)
Related Error messages: None actually, see below.

Okay, Iââ,¬â,,¢ve searched but this really isnââ,¬â,,¢t a problem per say, itââ,¬â,,¢s more of an understanding how to use functions/articles/custom actions?

I have a privacy policy here:  http://www.motleypixel.com/privacy.htm  What Iââ,¬â,,¢m trying to accomplish is a single front panel to contain this policy (with the left/right blocs visible.  Thatââ,¬â,,¢s not too hard to do, but what I canââ,¬â,,¢t figure out is how to only make the front panel visible on-click of a footer hyperlink called ââ,¬Å"Privacy Policyââ,¬Â, which will go on the very right of the copyright pipe-delimitated footer.

So Iââ,¬â,,¢ve read-up on the docs for articles, searched some, but canââ,¬â,,¢t find the solution.

Thanks,
Roy

You can't. The thing to do is to put your Privacy Policy into an article and then link to the article. A front panel shows on the front page of your site.

I have an article category called Privacy Policy and an article thatââ,¬â,,¢s a PHP article which contains:

include('/privacy.htm);  This file is in the root of the forum.

I figure it would be an article but I just canââ,¬â,,¢t figure out how to deep-link to it.

Iââ,¬â,,¢m assuming I want the setting Display on Front Page = No  Thereââ,¬â,,¢s a setting at the very bottom Override FrontPage Settings when displayed on FrontPage thatââ,¬â,,¢s checked now, but I figure that wonââ,¬â,,¢t matter if the Display on Front Page = No.

I guess to start I need to know how to deep-link to the article aka action to display the article.  I guess I missed that part I the docos?

Thanks,
Roy

I would say place it in an article, has JP says, on my site. I have mine in a custom action here (http://www.lesmonds.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=State). with a link to that in a menu on the front page.

Well, there are sites about php all over the 'net, so we don't repeat it here.

Personally, I would copy the file and paste it into an html article, just because having it in an html article will make it easier to edit, if you should need to do so.

But if you want to keep it as a separate file, you should be able to. (I've never done it myself, but I don't see why you couldn't.) The script is run from a file in the Sources/ directory, so your path needs to either be relative to that (something like "../privacy.htm") or you can put in the whole path, which will likely be something like "/home/username/forum/privacy.htm". If neither one of those work, try other relative paths.

But the simplest would be just to put the html into an html article. :)

Lesmond,

Thatââ,¬â,,¢s what Iââ,¬â,,¢m trying to do.  What type of block is your privacy policy and where did you put action=State for the custom action?  Iââ,¬â,,¢m assuming yours is not an article?  I just need to know exactly what you are doing, only in my case I wonââ,¬â,,¢t use a menu button/tab; rather, I will use a hyperlink in the copyright footer.

Thanks JPDeni, I may just make it an html article for ease as you mention.  Itââ,¬â,,¢s the calling of the article that Iââ,¬â,,¢m obviously having issues understanding.

Thanks,
Roy

I use the custom action mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=331) but it is not maintained now!

Okay thanks Lesmond...but before this thread is tagged "answered" I want to make sure there's nothing intrinsic to SMF/TP that I can use.  I think there's a way with custom actions in a particular block calling an Article, but I can't seem to make it work right.

Hope you dont mind ??? but I have copied the page to an article here (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?page=7), I used a table to get the same background has you have on your page, you couldnt use the same html in that page, and it would be easy to link to that article from a link in the footer.

You are trying to figure out how to make a link to an article? When you go to edit the article, look at the url. It will look something like this

.../index.php?action=tpadmin;sa=editarticle

followed by some number. Let's say that number is 3. Your link to that article will look like

.../index.php?page=3

Alternatively, you can enter a word in the article page just below the title. Let's say you enter the word privacy. Then you can link to the article by

.../index.php?page=privacy

Yay!  It works:  http://www.motleypixel.com/forum/index.php/page,privacy.html  added it to the copyright footer...perfect, thanks for the help.  I'm obviously not versed in article usage. You know though, I read through all sections in the Docs for articles and I don't once recall how to reference an article directly.

Solved.

That's something we'll have to look into, then. I don't recall how I learned how to access them. I use a lot of pages on my site, so I must have learned it somewhere. :) It may have been in a post.

I'm glad you got it worked out. Looks great!
