Hello All,
I'm using SMF 1.1.10 and TP 0.9.8
We recently relocated the board from locally hosted on a dedicated server, to shared hosting
The old php info (from the local machine) can be found here:
http://174.3.0.240/index3.php
Then new, can be found here:
http://www.banditalley.net/index3.php
As best I can tell, the 3 main entries that usually affect uploads are the same, but we're having trouble with the downloads.

Using the default theme (SMF Default Theme - Core)
If I try to download a file that's under 1MB, it will download just fine (note, the files that we have are up to about 400kb then the next size is at the 3.5mb mark, and it won't download.)
If I try to download any of the files that we have that are above this limit, the download never starts, the screen doesn't refresh, it doesn't (appear to the user to ) fail. Nothing happens.
Looking in the logs, I get the following message:
2: filesize(): Stat failed for /usr/local/pem/vhosts/<hostingIDHere>/webspace/httpdocs/<websitenamehere>/forums/tp-downloads/- empty item - ftp (errno=2 - No such file or directory)
File: /usr/local/pem/vhosts/<hostingIDhere>/webspace/httpdocs/<websitenamehere>/forums/Sources/TPdlmanager.php
Line: 1586
Yes, the file exists, but the message is the same whether the file exists or not.
I've tried:
- removing the download file entries and re-adding them
- I've tried re-uploading the files
- I've tried changing the permissions on the files to 777. (the webserver uses apache:apache as the owner/group, but the FTP'd files save as f195xxx: pemcln (the owner and group for the shared hosting account))
- I've tried creating another category and adding the files to the new category instead
The webhosting package has no Cpanel access, and the web interface is atrocious, I have no ability to change ownership in the web interface, hence the permissions change.
Every time I try to do something, then test again, I click the download link, and we just stare at each other for a while.
I searched the forums, and saw several people with the same problem, but no solution that worked for me.
Do I need to contact my host about this? If yes, what information would they need to find the issue?
Thanks
stormi
I forgot to mention:
I've also run repair_settings.php
THe whole board works with the exception of the downloads
This is a hosting issue where php uploads have been set to 1mb max. You'll probably have to contact your hosting and ask them to set it higher.
You can also follow the instructions for "Can't upload a large zipped game/memory error (http://wiki.smfarcade.info/SMF_Arcade/FAQ#Can.26.23039.3Bt_upload_a_large_zipped_game.2Fmemory_error)".
Skhilled has hit the nail on the head.... contact your host.
Hi guys,
Just to clarify: This will affect downloads as well? I upload via FTP to get the files up there, it's the downloading that's a problem.
If I make the files available via direct link (i.e. move them out of that folder, etc) the files download fine.
Thanks
Did you try uploading one of the affected files the normal way through the upload feature in your downloads module? Instead of using the FTP method.
I don't usually do that, because it fails at 8 mb due to the php limits on the larger files (we're hosting files up to about 135MB at this time).
Just tested it though. Uploads fine, but can't download it just like when the files are FTP'd.
It says "waiting for forums.banditalley.net..." indefinitely.
The download never starts.
Interestingly, if I've uploaded the way you suggest, there are no errors in the logs, unlike the filesize error that shows up with the FTP'd files.
You should talk to your host then, and ask them to help you. Its most likely a server permissions problem.
Alright, Will do.
I will report back if they tell me what they fixed,... as long as they don't say they sacraficed a chicken and waved incense over it. (which I suspect they'll try to tell me. ) ???
Thanks for the input.
LOL!
Hey, just a thought, I was all wrapped up in the includes and such for php, and failed to notice that my old server was running PHP5.2.6, and that the new server is running PHP4.4.7... but I think that PHP5 is available as an option.
What would happen to TP (and SMF) if I upgraded it to PHP 5.x?
Any chance it's part of what's been causing my issues?
(still no response from my host,... so I'm trying to figure it out on my own)
It all depends upon the security model that they are using on their php/apache setup.
But in theory nothing should go "boom" if I make php5 available to SMF while everything's "running", right? I would put it into maintenance mode, change the setting, then test and re-enable the board.
I will also pull the phpinfo for the php5 version they're running and see if I can see any pitfalls or potential good points.
OK,.. I bit the bullet and upgraded the board to php 5.
phpinfo tells me it's 5.2.5
I also know that the memory_limit is set to 128M, other than that, the max_execution_time is still 30, and post_max_size and upload_max_filesize are both set to 8M.
Interestingly enough, it fixed my downloads issue. Yay!!!
lmao, good work! Glad it's fixed.
Thanks to all of you for the input. It helped to have people to bounce this off of.
