Title: BBC tag for ...Read More link
Post by: fak3 on May 22, 2009, 10:20:10 PM
Hi, this is a suggestion for you developers & co. :)
What about a BBC tag like [more] so you can choose where Read More link will be placed. Would be great if you use forum posts rather than TP articles.

I know my english is bad so here it is an example:
I love
[more]
TinyPortal.

Will be displayed in homepage as:
QuoteI love ...Read More

There are SMF mods that do this. I believe they are called "hide" and "spoiler". Do a search at SMF for those and you should find them. There may be others similar to those.

They are not the same. They don't let you choose where to place the Read More link.
ATM, if you use forum posts instead of TP articles, the only setting to play with is the 'Number of characters to display per forum-post' in Admin - Settings and Frontpage.

What do you want to happen when someone clicks the link?

By clicking read more you can read the entire post...

How can you read the entire post? Go to the original post in the forum or expand the block so that the whole thing shows in the block?

The reason I ask is that going to the original post would be very difficult, if not impossible, to program.

Go to the original post would be awesome.

And impossible. So it's not going to happen.

Ah! Now I see what you mean.

I want to amend what I said before. I am correct that using BBC code for this is impossible. There's just now way to do it. However, it might be possible to have some sort of tag in a post and program TP to stop displaying it at that point. You wouldn't want it to be something that would print in the original post, but would be recognizable from the TP script. I don't know what that would be, though.

It would maybe be possible, although it's not something I would be willing to mess around with. Someone with >$foo than I have would need to do it. ;)

Theoretically coding, could you not set up each message with a DIV containing the remainder of the message to be triggered to display upon clicking the '[Read More]' link via javascript?

Assuming you track each DIV by name, have each link opening each DIV by event trigger... Would have to be javascript in order to change the page without a reload.

That was what I was thinking when I asked what the OP wanted. It really could be the same as the Hide/Show buttons on the blocks. But that wouldn't be going to the original post, which is what he said he wanted.

There would still be the problem of having it print out in the original post -- you wouldn't want "read more" to be in the middle of a post -- and altering the TP code to know where to put the div.

Also, I haven't a clue about javascript. No $foo there!
