Related Error messages: When posting new topics, the page will sometimes take forever to load
Basically, whenever someone tries posting a reply to any topic, the post won't go through, and the page will sit there and load forever. This happens completely randomly, so I can't reproduce the problem at all. I am running SMF off my own home server, so I've got full access to MySQL and PHP if that's the case.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
That TP version you are running has been updated to the latest public available TP 1.0 Beta 3, I suggest you upgrade. That TP version had some bad bugs...Also that version of SMF is 2 versions behind that latest SMF 1.1.8 and there are security fixes in the SMF versions so I would upgrade that also and that may fix your issues.
Well the problem is, I can't update anything. My board is so effed up between all the mods to the point where the updates for SMF don't even work. I tried updating to 1.1.8 once and all hell broke lose. I was lucky that I was even able to get it working again.
Not to sound like the bearer of bad news but your problem it sounds like is the mixture of ALL those mods. Some mods don't play well with others. I would try one at a time uninstalling mods until you find the culprit stealing all the cpu cycles. Since your problem points at posting you might start with the double post stopper mod and see if that helps.
ok, thanks. Ironically that was like one of the only mods that successfully uninstalled. I guess I'll have to go through all the other ones and do a manual uninstall.
Thanks. I'll report back if I get into any other things relating to my problem.
Edit: I just noticed that most of failed checks for the uninstall of some of the mods relate to the default theme's files, like profile.template.php. Is it ok if I just go ahead and proceed with the uninstall of the mod? I'm currently using a custom theme, and I disallowed access to change your theme, so I don't know if that'd be an issue or not.
I have over 40 packages installed on my site.. most mods I have to install manually now. I plan to start fresh soon, theres at least 2 I don't use ;)

[Q] Do you get any error pages when the site hangs? a 405 Error message, for example.

This is really an SMF issue and you should be asking there for support first, as posting in the forum is SMF.
HAHAHAHAHA.. I can't believe somebody made a mod from this:
12. Remove Quoted Images
Ahahahahahahahahaha.... *pause*.. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :2funny: *cough*... Sorry
in the theme style.css file, (Any theme).
find:
/* A quote, perhaps from another post. */
.quote
{
CUSTOM STYLE
ATTRIBUTES
}
Add after
.quote img
{
display: none;
}
/me wonders if this mod's instuctions tell you how to add it manually to custom themes.
lol :D
Saw a mod for removing  /new_some/new_none.gifs
mm and you are running smf 1.1.6?? :o

Thanks for those suggestions. I've already done the forum maintenance multitudes of times, and there aren't any errors or anything out of the norm. There aren't any error messages, just endless loading, and I haven't seen anything yet in the server logs, but I'll keep checking. Most of the members are using the normal reply button.
And to be honest, I despise the SMF support, because I have posted like 5 topics asking very valid questions, and NONE of them have been replied to. Tinyportal, on the other hand, is way more dedicated. ;)
I'll keep diagnosing this problem. The odd thing is that it's only happening to a couple of members, not everyone.
Edit: Ok I just noticed that it's happening to me now, but on any of the links that I click, and it happens randomly. Could it be related to MySQL or PHP?
can you say what you have installed on your server? versions of php and mysql..
have you attempted to update the smf?
then you can worry about everything else darkspreader..
if you have issues upgrading, drop me a pm and i can help you. ;)
Abyss Web Server X2 v2.6
PHP v5.2.6
MySQL v5.0.67
I've tried updating SMF, but it resulted in utter destruction of the forum. I was lucky that I was even able to restore it.
I've also tried updating PHP and MySQL, but that also resulted in problems, for I am unsure if I'm supposed to just install the latest build over my previous directory, or what. ???
well i was going to send you to the doc's on smf, if you wanted to read them, but smf is being quirky again, meantime i have a upgrading tut or so on my site, see if you can see this.. you might have to register, but i can get you thru this..
either you do it, or me.. i do have some time tonight so let me know

Ok, I registered and read that post. I'm a little confused on it, but from what I understand, basically we're uninstalling all the mods, then reinstalling them under the new version?
I'm going to be sort of busy on some other work at the moment, but in about 30 minutes (10:00 P.M. Eastern time) I should be able to get a chance to work on this stuff.
Do you have any kind of instant messenger that we could use? I mainly use Xfire... actually that's the only thing I use :P
skype..
if you want.. drop me a number, or we can take this to pm's either here or my site.. ;)
hmmmm... i've never used skype, but now i'm interested to try it out lol. It's free, isn't it?
pc to pc.. i have been known to call anywhere in the states to japan russia and austrailia :smiley6600: :D
my skype name is over at my house, on my profile ;)
Hey guys, guess who got my site updated to 1.1.8 and updated TP to the beta 3?
*Points to the poster above me*
:P
Anyways, I'm going to see if anyone is still having the loading problem. At this point, the only mod I have installed is Tinyportal. So it could very well be one of the mods that's been installed.
that it could be, darkspreader..
good luck with things and if you need me again, let me know ;)
Ugh, users are still reporting that it hangs on loading the page...
This leads me to believe that it's something with MySQL or PHP...
:buck2:
not sure why.. im getting:
Page created in 0.137 seconds with 24 queries.
Well it happens completely randomly. Before I thought it was just when posting, but now it's on any link.
i know you added the tp, what else did you re add??
perhaps one of the database guys here could see, if not you could talk to one of mine.
either way, i hope you get it straight.. let me know k?? ;)

Maybe I should update MySQL and PHP then see? (No clue how to do those two things the right way :P)
just backup everything before you do ;)
Well, I successfully updated PHP and MySQL, and it's still hanging.
And now that I'm thinking about it, I do have this program called CFosSpeed that does traffic shaping to optimize my connection... maybe it's having an effect on the packets getting sent through or something. I'll uninstall it and see how things go.
How many users you have on the forum at a time? Have you looked at the load on your server? What is happening when the slow times come? Is the CPU over worked? Is memory an issue? Maybe your connection is saturated with too much traffic?
According to the SMF stats, there are on average 10 users online a day. I know for a fact that my server can handle my web server, ftp server, and an occasional game server. I've got an e2160 (1.6ghz) with 2gb of ram. I'm also about to swap the ram with some lower latency ones. There's always over 1.2gb of free memory even with a game server running lol. I've also got a 2mbit upload rate.
I'm starting to strongly believe that it's this CfosSpeed program that's been the culprit. Google it, it's a really nice program for boosting your connection, but apparently it's not good for use on servers :uglystupid2:
I just found this in my PhpMyAdmin status page:
(https://www.tinyportal.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg291.imageshack.us%2Fimg291%2F9682%2Fmysql.jpg&hash=db4be6eca831fe9cf7f8d22b358ab1237cf4b93b)
Note the number of aborted connections... Maybe it could be something in MySQL that's causing these problems?
Should I post my my.ini file here to see if there's any problems? Or do you think it's beyond that?
You're beyond any support we can provide here. You need to find a site that can help you with your server settings. We can only support tinyportal here.
