Hi guys,
I heard there is a new article search capability in TP v1.0 beta 3. If this is correct, could someone explain how this works? i.e. for example if someone puts in a keyword (that matches an article's name -- yoursite.com/smf/keyword <--assuming you have some type of friendly url name, would the search take you directly to that page? Or would it take you to a search results page, like a normal search engine does (google, yahoo, etc...).
Thank you,
Muldoon
Try it on this forum and see it in action for yourself...
Article Search (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?action=tpmod;sa=searcharticle)
Thank you, I guess it does not load to a particular page but offers a list to choose from in the search results...
I don't quite get what you're suggesting Muldoon. Please explain how you think it should be.
IchBin, I would never begin to say something 'should be' this way or that here at TP.
I'm just trying to understand the different search capabilities out there as I may be looking to delve into another project in the future. If I move forward with this, I would need a message board, along with the ability to add numerous pages/articles. I would then need a search capability solely dedicated for the message board, and then a separate search capability for these other static pages/articles.
So for example, let's go with TP Admins...let's say I have a page solely dedicated to 'IchBin', as well as other TP Admins. If someone searches for IchBin, I would want it to go directly to the IchBin page. Then let's say there are themes on each of these pages by these admins. If someone searches for a theme, let's just call it 'Mist', and if there was only one theme on my site with Mist in the name I would want it to go directly to the Mist page. However if there are 2 more pages with Mist in the title, then it would want it to show a search results page with these 2 or more pages.
I'm just looking to see if TinyPortal would meet my needs for this capability, or if I would have to start looking at other places, which I wouldn't necessarily know where to begin...
Ah ok, I didn't quite get what you were saying. I wasn't accusing you of anything, just wanted to understand. TP does not work that way with the search, by loading the only article if only one result was found. In fact, neither does SMF for that matter. I'm not sure you'll find a lot of options to work with looking for this type of feature though. But good luck! :)
Ok, thank you IchBin, I really appreciate your response! And no worries about accusations :)
Bah... totally muffed up that sentence. I meant to say TP did NOT work that way. lol If you didn't catch that because of I inept ability to type complete sentences I apologize. lol
Haha, I figured out what you were getting at :)
Hm, searching as it works now would not cover what you describe, as IchBin explains..but have you looked at global tags? They don't have search options, but you could easily link articles and forum topics/boards together.
It doesn't present a list of all taggged items if you simply place the tag into the url, but thats planned. So in practice you would do: index.php?action=tpmod;tptag=ichbin and it would list all items(article, boards, downloads and topics atm) that have something to do with ichbin, in other words they are tagged with a "ichbin" tag.
This is going into beta4 though, but beta3 has the tagging, with all related items showing up in articles and downloads at least.
Thanks for the info Bloc! It'll be fun to try this out in the future.
