Title: Block order within a 2-column panel
Post by: Bryan on March 09, 2009, 05:30:40 PM
TP 1.0 beta3, SMF 1.1.8

No matter how I attempt to order the appearance of blocks within a 2-column panel, I can't make them appear so that for a lower panel I would have 3 blocks in each column.  See http://fayettenet.com and scroll to the bottom of the page.  All 6 of the blocks in the middle two columns are within a single panel (lower), with 4 blocks in the left middle column and 2 blocks in the right middle column.  I would like to have the block titled "Placeholder 2" appear at the bottom of the right column, but this seems to be impossible, no matter how I position it in the panel block list.

I found a couple of references to this in the bugtracker and in each case it was closed as being fixed in TP beta3, but this issue is still there for me.

Where they closed for Beta 3 or are they closed for the upcoming Beta 4.

Thanks for the replies.  Indeed they were reported for beta3.  I got confused by the reference to being fixed in beta3 in these two bug reports:
http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?action=bugtracker;sa=bug400
http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?action=bugtracker;sa=bug405
I guess it was a typo & was meant to say fixed for beta4.  In any case, is the fix available now as a modification to a beta3 file?

Hi Bryan,

I've had this message sitting in a tab in my browser for a couple of days trying to decide how I wanted to reply to it.

I'm not so sure that those 2 bugs you mentioned weren't solved for Beta 3 instead of Beta 4.  The kind of precise block placement you are talking about may not be possible with TP yet.  Though there has been a lot more features added that allow you to refine the placement of blocks in TP since 0.98, what you are trying to do may just not be available quite yet.

I know that there has been some discussion about additional methods for block placement, but nothing has really come out of it yet.  Despite this, there are some things that you can do.

With the addition of the other panels, you could split up your blocks into different panels to make things look good.  Part of the problem on your site is that the RSS Feed is so long that it's a little hard to fill up the right side.  However, you might be able to play with the block placement to make it look a little more presentable.

For instance, and this is only a possible suggestion, you could take the short Welcome Block and stick it into a Top Block by itself.  Then you could take the Recent Topics and Video blocks and place them side by side in the Upper Panel.  Finally, you could take the RSS Feed and the 2 Placeholder blocks and stick them into the lower panel, with the grid system.  The RSS Feed could be in position 1, and the 2 placeholder blocks could be placed below it side by side in positions 2 and 3, all 3 in the lower panel.

This would shrink the height of the RSS block and make it go the entire width.  These are just suggestions, but I think the site would look good like this.  Only suggestions.

Those are good suggestions, ZarPrime - thanks.  I've thought about using the upper panel in conjunction with the lower panel, but I'll need to have it like you suggest or if I want to maintain the 2-column layout in both then the upper panel blocks will have to be a fixed height to avoid gaps.  I'll play around with it and see what works best - thanks again.

No problem, and please let us know how it turns out.
