Title: iframe no scroll setting but still scrolling in blocks and articles
Post by: Dianna on February 27, 2009, 03:05:45 AM
Link to my site: http://www.schreeandbaby.com/index.php
SMF version: SMF v1.1.8
TP version: TP v1.0 beta 3
Theme name and version: Goldcharm1
Mods installed: SMF Mods: Gallery lite 1.8.3, SSi Topic & Replies v0.1, SMF Blog v1.0

Hi All!

I tried to move my SMF and TP to my root directory before making the site live (big mistake) to not build it in the right place the first time around. I ended up with a mess and had to do a fresh install of SMF and TP and uploaded my mysql backup.

All seemed to go well FINALLY but while doing the fresh SMF install I went ahead and upgraded from v1.1.7 to 1.1.8 before installing TP. That worked well since I was able to install TP through the package manager instead of manual install and I could install the latest v1.0 beta 3.

I give that history in case it gives light to my problem. I am using iframes in all of my articles, footer, left panel and most of my right blocks. However, I'm now getting the iframe SCROLL on all of the blocks and articles and the coding is correct in the iframe saying "no scroll" I've played around with sizing on the footer and nothing works. They are all inserted into the "HTML + BBC" type of block. Is there something obvious that I'm missing? Or is there some coding that is overriding my "no scroll" in the iframe?

Here's the iframe coding of my footer for example and note that the footer HTML page has a 900px width. So there is a 25 pixel play for the iframe to NOT think to even scroll yet it does.

<iframe name="footer" src=pages/block-footer.html" width=925 height=50 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 frameborder=0 scrolling=no></iframe>

p.s. my left panel looks fine with no scroll and it's also in an iframe. So I'm scratching my head on this one!

I would suggest using the Javascript + html block for html. In earlier versions it was called the scriptbox.

I don't know if it'll solve your problem, but it really is a better idea to use the javascript block type for html.

Hi JPDeni!  Thank you so much. I'll go try it now!  :-)

I'm glad you replied because I thought I read a topic by you on inserting HTML sites into articles where you explained that you can use the iframe or a php content code.  I love iframes but since I was having this scroll problem I was looking everywhere for that article to get the PHP code to direct to the html page.

Would you suggest I keep my HTML in the iframes or if I still have the scroll problem, should I try the php content code? If so, do you have that code?

Hmmm, I just tried to the HTML+Javascript on the "Show information" block that is on the right panel below the "Next Show Countdown" and now it disappared, only the frame is showing now.

I clicked on the HTML code brackets in the editor to add the iframe into the coding.  If I don't click on the HTML code brackets in the editor it won't let me add anything. Any idea why it's now disappeared?

Oh, no. I'm sorry. I didn't have any problems with it, so I'm not sure why you are.

I guess I should have not answered at all, because I don't have any experience with iframes.

Do you know why it could be just not showing up at all with the HTML&Javascript code?

I''m wishing I had stayed in 1.1.7 version or wondering if my fresh install if I've done something weird that has caused some weird bugs. Sigh.  I don't know what to do on many of the weird stuff happening, including this scroll.

I used to love iframes, now I'm hating them. :'(

I just built a fresh block and put the iframe back into a HTML+BBC Code block and it's showing again, but just back to the scrolling issue. I'm not sure why you have luck with HTML+javascript with iframes and I don't. hmmm.

The scroll thing is so not good, totally screwing up the site look, does anyone else know what it could be???

Oh wowwwww, I just discovered something that might shed some light on the problem. This is interesting. Upon looking at the left panel on why it's an iframe but does not have the iframe scroll problem, I realized that I have the "do not use title/frame" on the TP settings.

But, that sucks since it messes up my design on the right side. And, it still doesn't answer why the scroll is still on my articles and my footer since I'm not using the frame or title.  This is definitely something buggy.

Anyone experience this or know why or how to fix it?  Everything looked before I did the fresh installs.   :'(

I am getting serious bugs and weird stuff going on left and right. After I did the new install of SMF and TP, I then uploaded my tweaked theme to the servers. I'm now wondering if I overrode some of the new version stuff with old version coding. I'm going to do a complete fresh install again and try again. Then I'll copy the original theme that I was using and start fresh with it's tweaks after I have TP installed and go from there. There's just too much weird stuff going on like the iframes that makes no sense. Everytime I do a refresh I'm getting something different. Wish me luck. Just close out this thread. I'll start fresh.

Changing the width of your iframe to 135 fixed the scrolling issue for me. It just the little things that you have to iron out like that. I've never liked frames like that, but they can be useful.

Just a note here; you didn't say and I'm not quite understanding why you need to use all of those iFrames. As IchBinâ„¢ mentioned they can be useful and I do use them (2) myself but they can also be very difficult when trying to achieve the desired result.

So, have you considered placing your HTML directly into your articles and blocks? My site was originally all HTML, but over time more and more of the pages have been converted over to TP articles and while it takes a little work the end result is much better.

Hi Ken, if iframes continue to be a problem, I may end up doing that. I like the convenience of tweaking my article site pages in Golive and just plopping the changes over to my server. I love the ease of using iframes, except for being so damn quarky all the time.

I have managed to resolve the iframe scrolling issue. My site was having ALL kinds of buggy stuff happening in it after the fresh install.  I was getting different results with every refresh and edit. It was crazy and iframe scroll didn't make sense.

However, I wanted to let anyone else know who may have done a fresh install and had familiar issues with stuff going weird to BE SURE TO DO THESE TWO THINGS:

1. USE THE SAME VERSIONS OF SMF AND TP THAT YOU HAD FROM YOUR BACKUP! - Re-install back to the original versions that you were using before. After I did the fresh install I went ahead and upgraded SMF and then use the new TP version for the upgraded SMF. Even though my backed up dbase was on the versions.  I'm guessing that is why I was getting such weird stuff happening.  I did a completely new install again and went back to the original version of both SMF and TP that I had and that was used on dbase backup.  So far everything is working great!  Except one small thing I'm hoping to get help on.

2. RUN SMF'S REPAIR_SETTINGS.PHP SCRIPT - Do go to SMF support and download the REPAIR_SETTINGS.PHP file and install it in your root directory and run that repair. I didn't do that the first time around, figured I didn't need too. Ummm, WRONG! You definitely need to run this repair rand check it out and tweak all of your settings. It will give you the recommended settings. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!!!  IT saved me!

That's my advice above from one newbie to another on fresh installs!   8)

Ichbin, I have one weird result happening that I'm not sure if I should ask here in this post or start a new thread with the issue. It's a footer problem, I'll start a new thread to keep it clean.  :-)

dianna,
I am interested in the workflow you use to incorporate the articles from golive into your smf structure. Do you use golive layers, then structure your page with content, then put it on your server, then just link to this from your smf using a iframe block, or do you actually place the code into the smf block as generated from golive?
As you can see i don't know much about this, but I really like the way your site has a wacky disjointed knock your socks-off feel, that throws most boxy forum structures out the window.
I don't think this can be done working within the forum workflow.
Can you give me some insight to how you do these things?
