OMG! well i just deleted a folder inside of my chat folder and right in front of my eyes 6 months of work started vanishing before me! all my folders all my images lit. Everything!! was getting 404 errors everywhere. Contacted server with a site down report and all they mangaed to get back up were some old folders ("everything we could find in your root folder" which obv wasnt alot).
So had to order a complete restore (which is expensive but i hope worth it)
I backed up using the download from teh admin section but not sure how much that actually back ups, but do it everyday in case of something liek this happening, but i image it doesnt back up all teh image folders etc.
So im waiting on a knive edge now to see if they restore properly, or whether i have to go back to square 1 (which i probably wont on the site that ive lost as it was too much time and effort)
has this ever happened to anyone and can i expect the complete restore to actually work (is it like system restore or something?)
Anyway gonna go cry and wait in anticipation ... boo hoo :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Sorry to hear that... What control panel does you hosting service provide for you to admin your site with? My provider uses cPanel which the backup it provides is a complete backup of your total space... I will then down load that to my laptop for archive... I have not had to do a total restore and wish you the best of luck!!

Just make local backups of everything you do, or even off-site backups
thx, ive got teh forum databse backed up, and some images, but so much stuff will be lost and no idea how it happened.
just crossing my fingers now and praying!
cepsi,
Ouch, that hurts me to even read about it. If you don't have your own backups, there's not much you can do until they've finished.
Suggest you go out an enjoy a movie and a nice dinner and try to get it out of your mind and take a look at it when you get back home. Stress will never help to solve a problem like this. Sorry.

k its back 100% phewwwwwww, i did keep enough of my backups to make sure anything was missing was ok. The restore worked great just had a few bits to fill in (which luckily i had backed up)
If there is one lesson i learned its always back up everything and even back up twice!
OMG i dont want to ever go thru that again lol

One point I might want to bring up, is check your backups from time to time... A shop I worked at (before I got there) had an issue... the "backups" were running every night but when needed, they had 0% success in recovering anything... We do a sanity check once a month of the backups to make sure we have what we say we have AND we can recover from them.... As we joked about the former crew, backups are good, but useless if you can't recover anything.... --Mitch
So glad you got it back, cepsi. I did what you did once. Watched about three years worth of programming vanish because I did something stupid. Fortunately, other people had some of the things I'd written and they sent them back to me. I didn't get them all, though.
Glad to hear cepsi... I can imagine the anxiety you were feeling.
this is gonn abe my signature from now on BACK BACK BACK UP BACK UP and if anyone asks me why il will tell them how i chewed thru my nails in 24 hours, and lost 2 stone lol
