Title: Need beta testers
Post by: JPDeni on January 28, 2009, 12:23:24 AM
Hi all!

I've written a little word game and I need some more beta testers for it. You can see it at

http://jpdeni.comze.com/index.php?page=8

The game is called "The Exquisite Corpse" and it's just a little word play. Each person that comes along is asked to enter a word -- a noun, an adjective, a verb, etc. -- without knowing what the other words are in the sentence. When the sentence is finished, it goes on display with the others. Some are just silly and some can be quite profound. I've just added a facility to rate the sentences, so you can say which ones you like and which are, well, not so much.  ;)

You don't have to register in order to play, but you do have to register and log in if you want to rate the sentences.

I'd really appreciate it if as many people as possible would come by and play. Just adding one word would help a whole lot. I started running out of words, myself.

Also, if you have any problems or suggestions, please don't hesitate. I'll put the code up for anyone else to use, as soon as I'm pretty sure the bugs have been swatted.

Worked fine for me JP. I entered a few words...

Added a few earlier.
This is a great little app JP.

JP, I just added an adjective.  I've had the site up all day and just kept refreshing it to check it once in a while.  I noticed earlier that there was a bracket or something in there but I can't remember if it was a left bracket or a right bracket now.  Could somebody have been trying to put in something they shouldn't have been, like a smiley or something?

Thanks to all of you! There's some great sentences going.  :2funny:

Zetan, I think it was probably a typo. I saw it and edited it. I think it was a ] IIRC.

That was me, not Zetan, but that's OK.  I know it's hard to tell the difference between the 2 of us. ;D

This thing is making some hilarious sentences.  The adjective I put in earlier was dusty and the sentence it was used in was "The dusty elephants flippantly leapt beside the wimpy lettuce."  That's great.  I put the verb drove in about 15 minutes ago, but I haven't seen it come up yet.  This is a lot of fun.

I'm sorry. I lost track of the Z's. :D

When there are two people on at once, they may both be asked for a verb. Since people take a while to think of words, one will enter before the other one does. If you are submitting a verb and the last sentence in the database already has one, the script will start up a new sentence for the verb, but it won't show up until all of the other words have been filled in.

There's about 10 partial sentences at the moment. I didn't expect that, but it's okay. It's interesting to see the way it all comes out.

I think I just found my favorite one ever, and it's your "drove" sentence:

The dangerous renegade outlaw bravely drove across some healthy hermit crabs.

I'm trying to figure out how the sentences are displayed in the scrolling box on the front.  It seems to show 20 but the ones it shows are sort of random.  some of the new sentences you can see when you click "show all" don't seem to be showing up in the scrolling part.

OK, I think I figured it out but I'm not sure.  It looks like it's displaying the 20 highest rated sentences.  That's cool if that's what's going on.

The ones in the scrolling part are the highest rated ones. I thought I'd put the best ones up front. I could do them in the order they last came in, though. That could be an option, I suppose.

That one is nice JP, but this my fav:
The velvety ballerina suddenly was until the arboreal monkeys.

... maybe cause my words are in it. ;)

No, I think the highest rated ones is cool.  It might be a good idea to mention that those shown below are the 20 highest rated sentences.  That might help to entice people into registering so that they can rate any and all of the sentences.  Very cool.

Ken, I don't know.  I think I have to agree with JPD on "The dangerous renegade outlaw bravely drove across some healthy hermit crabs." and not just because my verb is in it.  It almost makes sense. :2funny:

Very good point. I'll go do that.

I'm also thinking of changing the rating interface so it's on the "View all" page. Also, now that I've got a lot of entries, I think I need to break up "View All" into multiple pages.

Well the ballerina one is rather existential, if you put a pause after the "was".

"The velvety ballerina suddenly was -- until the arboreal monkeys." Implying, of course, that she suddenly came into being and then, when the monkeys came, she was no more.  :(

If you put in two words (like a full name) dose it drop both?

It'll take anything up to 20 characters in each of the fields. So "Fred Flintstone" and "tiger's stripes" and "King of the Goblins" all work.

OK.
So my Fred Flintstone will show up at some point then. :)

The frigid Fred Flintstone mightily will see up pretty pork chops. :)

Actually, I think that was my dearest friend, whom I've known since 1968.

That's kind of the point, though. You can't ever plan anything with this game.

The way that the programming is set up on this one is very much related to the original game, with each person doing one word in order through the sentence. Well, sorta. I ran into the problem of several people entering words at the same time, and overcame that. But I got to thinking of another way to do the same game, but making it so that it's less likely for individuals to make a whole sentence on their own.

Each person would add in a whole sentence worth of words. The script would then place them in different sentences, wherever there's a blank space.

Then there's the story version. I've been planning that in my head, but ran into some snags. I'll continue on with it, though.

That's okay, crip. No offense taken. :)

I've got a number of people coming in now, from my fan board, from a politics mailing list, from my blog... I needed to get a bunch of them quickly so I'd have something to work with.
