I have so many problem with my webhost when it comes to various installations. I also been experiencing difficulties in trying to find out how to install a mod like tiny portal to my SMF. Today I tried out again and an automatic install at my forum seems impossible. It doesn't do me any good what ever I put in to the ftp-info and such I just get an error in return.
I was on my way to install the tiny portal manually and felt everythin went really really smooth until ...
Quote6.| In the folder "TPmanual-install" open the "tp-version.mod" that corresponds with the TP version you are trying to install. Browse through it's content to familiarize yourself with the editing instructions before actually doing so. Now, open a copy of the files in your "TPmanual-install/SMF/TP" directory with your editor, and follow the editing instructions from your "tp-version.mod" file. Remember when reading edit file instructions:
* $boarddir = files from the forum root listed above.
* $sourcesdir = files from the sources directory above.
* $themedir = files from theme directory above.
7.| Upload your edited files in your "TPmanual-install/SMF/TP" folder to there proper directories and your almost done! If you run into trouble, you can always upload the unedited files from your "TPmanual-install/SMF" folder to the proper directories for a quick fix.
8.| Finally, run the "manual_tp_install.php" in your forum root by visiting the URL of that file in your browser. This will update your database. Your manual install should be complete!
What's this. I may be an idiot but I don't get it :o
I also find that instruction a bit confusing actually :-\
( will ONLY work on SMF1.1.7 so if you have SMF2, just forget about tp all in all cause we dont support SMF2 at this time )
Do like this
1. Download the TP package you want to install
2. Extract the zip on your local PC
3. Upload all the files you extracted to your forum folder ( same dir you have the forum files in )
3. Make the manual code edits to the SMF files according to this doc
* TP V098 = http://docs.tinyportal.co.uk/index.php/topic,139.html ( if you download and want to use TP V098 )
* TP V1.0.5 and 1.0.6 = Modification Instructions (http://docs.tinyportal.co.uk/index.php?topic=140) ( If you download any of the 2 other TP versions )
4. Point your browser to the file called manual_tp_install.php like this h t t p : / / w w w . yoursite . c o m / manual_tp_install.php and that will make the db install.
Make sure you do this with Default Core theme as thats the base of everything.
It's the 1.7 I'm aiming for, I have a little test forum where I've been trying out to upgrade and install portals all afternoon :o The upgrade is now working so that I'll try on my actual forum later on tonight when all members are asleep ;) But I really really would like to set up a portal and this is absolutely the neatest of them all  ;D I'll try again and we'll see what happens :uglystupid2:
Just a little ps from a female point of view I can bet money most people working with these modifications are men.
How come there's always a document where you need to find this and replace with. Why doesn't anybody just upload the actual documents for copy and paste? This is not the only place I found this line of work. ;-)
G6 or some other hero, I'm stuck! Is the procedure I didn't get an absolute must for 1.7 forum?
You have tried using the package install through SMF? If so, what happened, exactly?
How are you stuck? Tell us what has happened.
QuoteWhy doesn't anybody just upload the actual documents for copy and paste?
Because someone who is installing TP may have already installed other modifications that have changed the files. If we put files up that have just the TP alterations in them, the changes made by the other mods will have been lost.
Also, I think it is against the agreement with SMF to make available any files on a website other than the SMF site.

Complete files are never posted anywhere no matter what which I find very strange. But that's me.
Anyway, uploading the TP via administrator area works absolutely perfect at my test forum, NOT. It needs FTP-info and no matter what I put in at the ftp:s info it will not accept it. A strange thing to me since I use a regular ftp-program with all other alterations on websites made in regular HTML, Joomla or whatever.
But via the SMF I can not get it to work. I had some severe problems upgrading my forum as well and just this minute I actually thought I killed it off once and for all when trying to upgrade it to 1.7.
My site would be perfect if I just could make the crappy upgrade to work and then installing the tiny portal.
QuoteComplete files are never posted anywhere no matter what which I find very strange.
Right. But I explained the reasons for it. :) You may think the reasons are dumb, but that's what they are.
(BTW, I'm a woman! ;) )
If your problem is with the FTP part of it, you can bypass that. Using your FTP program, upload the TinyPortal package to the
Packages directory. Once you do that, you should be able to go to Admin > Main > Packages and install TP.
It doesn't matter how I install or bring up the TP either I don't get the crummy explanations as I said when I started the thread or my admin-area won't let my finalize the installation. It's just like a bad circle going round and round and at this point I'm upgrading my actual forum file by file cause it just won't work any other way.
I'm starting to believe there's actually something severly incorrect with my installation which is made by a quick install at my webhotel. I've managed to install test versions of SMF with not this many problems that my actual forum is bringing me and I can not afford up setting my member cause they've been through not one but TWO moves and sometimes I do regret leaving the phpbb environment :'(
Well, if you were really clear about your problems, we might be able to help you. You said your problem was with FTP within SMF. I told you how to overcome that. Now you say it's something else.
If you want me to take a look at it, create an admin accout for me and give me the information -- login name, password and URL -- to your site. I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.
I'm sorry if I'm being unclear. The ftp at my SMF really doesn't work. And now the upgrade I just did doesn't work either and it worked perfectly at my testsite. As I said before I think the problem is within the installation.
Thank's so much for your offer but I need to think about it. :)
If it's a problem within the installation, the best thing I can suggest is to delete the installation and try again.

Doesent work !
WHAT doesent work, what error messages do you get, permission issues ? Host try and cant get it to work ? then ithink you should change host or something.
really, if you need help, you need to give info so we know what to help you with.
FTP info is not even our department, it's SMF, the package manager is their work, and not ours.
What info do you connect with to access your files on the server ? the FTP info are the same in SMF, except localhost as it's on the server it connects.
Info is what we need to be able to help you.
Errors when it doesent work, and what errors, copy and paste them in here so we can see
it's not so easy to explain technical issues when you're not an expert yourself.
I have severe problems uploading stuff to my forum via the built in ftp-system it just don't work and gives me different answers, sometimes it's the connection , sometimes it the info I put in and I'm using the same as via my regular ftp. Yesterday it screamed of the files not being rewritable but whatever I did on that department it didn't help cause the built in ftp shuts me off!
My actual forum is now upgraded and ready to rock n'roll and later on today when I'm all awake again I'll give my testforum another go on the trying to install tiny portal department.
I think you should start talking to your host and ask them to solve the issues with the server.
And you dont need to be a technical expert to check the error log, or see what errors you get in these messages inside SMF and copy and paste them in here.
I to am a womman and not a technical person i whole except when it comes to cars.
The descriptions i gave you in my first post are what you need to manually install TP, if that doesent work for you you will have to ask some one to help you install, but if that to only gives errors on the server with permissions, owner of the files etc, you need to solve that matter first as thats not something we can help you with from this site.
I think I know what is going on here. You are trying to install TP and other mods through Packages. The problem is you are seeing a page asking you for your FTP Info but no matter what you put in it it does not work so you cannot get past that point.
What that is actually asking you for is you server username and password it SMF can FTP the mod file through Packages. Please keep in mind that it does not mean for you to use your FTP info..ftp meaning your username and password for the ftp program that you might be using. They might be using a different username and password.
The FTP you see in SMF is not the same as you using a FTP program. This misleading and SMF should change the wording on it. Packages does ftp the files of your mod for you but calling it "ftp" makes new users think you need ftp information instead of server information, which is what it is really asking for and can be different. ;)
If you have cPanel then use that username and password. If you have some other way to access your server use that info. You should then be able to use the "FTP" in SMF and then be able to use Packages to install mods like TP.
Now, as far as files and folders not being writable...
This could be one of 2 hosting issues.
1. Your folder/file permissions need to be changed to whatever your server users...777/666 or 755/644 (called chmodding). The first number is for folders and the 2nd for files. If you are using the 2nd (755/644) you will probably need to ask your hosting to change them for you or use a ftp program like Filezilla and do it yourself. If you have 777/666 you should probably have no problems. You have to ask your hosting what they use on their servers.
With 775/644, you might get problems on a lot of servers that use it every time you install a mod. This is because it will not set the uploaded file to the correct permissions. So, they will need to be changed as mentioned above.
2. You've lost ownership of your folders/files. If you cannot change permission yourself (it won't allow you) then you will have to ask your host to "chown" your account so you can regain ownership to change permissions.
You might have to change permissions every time you install something if you have 755/644 permissions. You host can help you with that. :)

That was the best explanation I've ever gotten at any forum (no fence to you other guys who also doing this really good) but still this is what I get An Error Has Occurred!
Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.
Try this: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=278824.0
It worked for me but can't say if it will work for you. :)
You'll still need to look into the permission problem with your hosting. If you are using 755/644 then contacting them every time you install a mod can be a hassle for you. You might want to see if they allow SSH so you can access the server and change them yourself. This way you will not have to wait on them to do it and then gat back to you.

If you had told us that in your first post, we would have been pointing you to the same post Skhilled did allready in our first reply :D
Thats why we ask for diffrent things in our posting guide so we can pinnpoint the issues a lot easier with out having to write 2 pages of questions first :)
So I'm home and now I've tried to alter the file according to the SMF forum. This didn't help me, now I get the some files that need to be re-written can not be and nog it actually says that my log-in is failing. Don't know what user name and log in to use to get by the log-in issue!
Well, if you have done what we asked, and still cant install, you really need to contact your host and ask them to fix your issues on the server.

All permissions are set as you said earlier and the file is altered and trying username and password in different ways either gives me that it is incorrect or that "such file doesn't exist".
Can you send me your admin account for your forum, and also your FTP account so i can get to your files in PM if you want me to have a look at it for you ?

I just set up a complete new FTP-user for my forum and now I'm in a complete different environment.

Do the blocks show up on the sides and front of your forum? Is there a "forum" button in the menu? Is there a TinyPortal section in your admin area?

And that is ALL thank's to you guys and girls!!! Now I'm gonna take it for a test drive and maybe later on tonight I'll be able to execute the same for my actual forum...
If you make this testsite a mirror ( clone ) of your live one, you can more or less just copy over the files from your test to your live and just update the database from the browser :)
