Title: Seeking input on which version of TP to DL and install.
Post by: Dr. Menard on January 14, 2009, 03:09:34 AM
Hola folks,

Long and the short: I just installed SMF on my site and I want to start messing around with TP.  I have an active message board on my site, but a couple nights ago I decided to set up a separate directory and do a fresh install of a virgin, unadulterated SMF Db so I have a second, experimental message board to mess around with.  I installed SMF 1.1.7.  NO mods installed, NO themes, NO members, just me and the default theme.

My question: Which version do you guys feel is most stable and feature rich?  They all look pretty cool (from what I can tell so far) but I'm having trouble telling the difference between what each offers.  I THINK I have three options for which version of TP to install: 0.9.8, 1.0.5 b1, and 1.0.6 b2.  I'm going to hunt around some more in the install forum to see if I can find out what the differences are between the versions, but I figured I'd ask in the event one of you folks with experience in TP could summarize it better, since I am not really sure exactly what I'm even looking at to be honest.

It seems I'd fine with 0.9.8, but would either of the others be of interest to a TP virgin?

.98 is the most stable and it's the one I like the best. Others prefer the features of the later versions.

Well, I just installed 0.9.8, it went flawlessly as would be expected, and this is really quite cool!  I suppose I can always upgrade to one of the betas later if I want, correct?

On an unrelated note- on THIS site do I have to make a certain number of posts before I can modify my profile?  I do not currently have MODIFY PROFILE options under my PROFILE INFO area like I do in other SMF forums.

Hi Doc,

Welcome to TinyPortal.

As JPD says, everybody has their own preferences.  I use 1.05 beta1 on my main site and don't have too many problems.  But, as she says, 0.98 is currently the most stable.  From 1.0X on, there have been quite a few changes.  If you go with 0.98 now, there will be a little bit of a learning curve once you update to 1.0X but if you start out at 1.0X, it's harder to go back to 0.98 because there are database changes between the 2.  I don't recommend beta2 though.  There were quite a few bugs that have been squashed in that one that will be fixed in the next version.

Hoped this helped you decide, at least a little bit. ;)

Do we know whether 0.9.8 work with the Hack's Park shoutbox (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1295)?  A quick search here for Hack's Park shoutbox didn't turn up any results...I only ask because it's the one my people are already familiar with.  If I can enlarge the one that TP comes with, that would work just as well...I'll keep messing around with things and get a feel for the controls.

That shoutbox is a mod for SMF, just as TP is.  TP has it's own shoutbox that will work in a TinyPortal block, but the one on SMF will probably work fine, you'd just have to try it.  I don't know anything about it.

I'd install TP first, and then try the Hack's Shoutbox.  If they interfere you should be able to uninstall the Hack's Mod and use the TP Shoutbox.

TO answer the profile question, yes you have to have 10 posts before you can PM or modify your profile on this site.

I figured it might be something like that.  Thank you for clarifying.

Whoa, Nelly!  I just started messing with moving blocks around and the front page settings while you were posting this and it looks like I won't even have to BOTHER with loading a new shoutbox.  I just moved over the one that came loaded with TP, made some adjustments, and viola...just like I was hoping.

This is a good thing...a VERY good thing.  I'm pretty excited.  and SURPRISED by the very fine level of control with all the features here!  Very nice work Bloc (and everyone who is helping him)!  When I have some moola, I am looking forward to supporting the cause by purchasing a theme.  Until then, I'm going to have to toy with using a theme from the SMF site if I want a custom one.

Thank you for the tips and info., everyone.  I look forward to getting to know you all more as I get into TP further.  Glad I took the plunge.   :)

Glad you've already made progress.

Many of the 1.X themes in our download section here also work with TP 0.98 so it's worthwhile to check some of those first.  The ones you'd get on SMF might have to be converted to work with 0.98.  If you download any make sure they say they'll work for TP 0.9X.

A lot of the theme designers for SMF are also theme designers for TP conversions, so it's also worthwhile to breeze through the various theme boards here to look for themes.  You might just be surprised. ;)

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 Voila!!  I know... grow up, but shouldn't there be some kind of security feature to protect against this?  :2funny:
