* No Mods installed
* No error messages
* SMF downloaded from smf.org
* database tables were created
* all TP file edits appear to be correct ( checked them against the tinyportal1049.mod file & using file compare in PSPad )
Did this twice. I deleted all the altered files and renamed the backups without the tilde. SMF magically appeared again. Deleted the TP module and re-installed. Same result: site completely blank.
Checked SMF before re-installing and UTF-8 was not the problem.
Possible tinyportal1049.mod is wrong file?
I'm hoping the blank site symptom will help someone diagnose this. There are no 'undefined function' error messages, just blank.
Blank site is often the cause of permissions. Even though your permissions may have let you install, that doesn't always mean the code is there, or that the DB tables were actually created. Haven't looked at the TP edits, but the modification instructions are located here.

I can only suggest you do the manual install if the package manager is not working for you.
How do I manually install TinyPortal (http://docs.tinyportal.co.uk/index.php?topic=29)
Doing the file compare on the TP edits appears to be pretty much the same effect as doing the manual install.
As stated, the database tables were created.
Can you provide some insight as to how and what permissions TP would change? Particularly since removing the TP edits restores the site.
Thanks for the help.
Blank Admin Panel or Text missing? (http://docs.tinyportal.co.uk/index.php?topic=34)
Thats not the problem G6.
taobrad, as I already stated, there is not much we can suggest without looking at it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to look at everyones problems. I'm not talking about TP permissions, I'm talking about server permissions in PHP or file systems permissions which we have no control over.
I thought permission issues returned some sort of feedback to the browser in the form of an error message, "access denied" or something similar. I get nothing, just a totally blank screen.
Thanks guys. I guess I'll just have to move on unless someone can provide insight into why the server or file system permissions work for SMF alone but not when TP is added.

Server permissions do not always output visible errors. While you may have went over the steps of a manual install, did you actually try the manual install and do it?
It may be worth mentioning that you may want to use a high-quality FTP program (such as FileZilla) to upload the files to your server, if you are not doing so already...
I had some issues very similar to yours before, when I was using what came with my OS to FTP the files. It said it worked and transferred files, but often had corruption in the files that created havoc when I ran the scripts.
Just some FYI. Good luck, as IchBin is very knowledgeable about all this...
