Title: smf 1.1.5-->1.1.6 TP CRASH on update
Post by: Toad on September 08, 2008, 04:44:40 AM
Our site was getting hacked multiple times over the past three weeks, so when the new smf update came out today I installed it right away.  Now TinyPortal 0.983 will not reinstall.  I deleted it, downloaded and then uploaded a fresh copy, and still get the following message when applying mod:

Installations actions for "TinyPortal":
The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

I also tried the newer beta, but it had three major 'red' not tested successfully errors screaming out, "don be stupid enough to try and install this right now".

Could it be a chmod issue?

What do I do to get my beloved TP back online?   We are so dependent on it.  Please advise.

Just for reference and to clarify that the update works, I was able to install SMF 1.1.6 over 1.1.5 with TinyPortal .0983 without any problems that I could detect. The list of files to be modified did not indicate any errors prior to me allowing the update.

For your issue, once you have the new SMF 1.1.6 installed, read this post: http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=25148.msg201818#msg201818

Probably the package-info.xml file needs to be updated for version control.

Yes I just upgraded my sites, one of which running a good modified version including TP without issue.  I know I had the 'package error' previous when it was 0.9.8 and jumped from 1.1.4-1.1.5.  So I'm sure it's just a package-info.xml issue for installation.

But you shouldn't have had to remove it.  Just like any mod you've got installed most time you upgrade.

Welcome to TinyPortal Toad.

In taking a look at your site it appears that you've resolved this issue, should we mark this one as solved?
Thanks.

No, I didn't resolve it.  In fact, I had to restore a back up to get it running again and that's why it looked like it was working.  If you look right now, you'll see that tp is down.  It took me hours and hours to get it back again.  This time I made a back up to the point of 1.1.6 being upgraded, and I activated all the mods that offered the option.

TP didn't have an activate option.  In the packages manager it simply says:

3. TinyPortal 0.983  [ List Files ] [ Delete ]

Of course it doesn't show up in the "installed packages" list.

What I did:

1.  I tried Ianedres suggestion of updating manually the package-info.xml.  That didn't work.

2.  So then I tried a manual install of TP, and my site went down.  I probably missed a ; or something silly.

N.B.  All my files are reporting as updated, except languages (since I don't want to install anything more than English).

Any advice now, before I start that whole process over for a second time?

Upload the package again replacing the TP zip file in your packages directory, with the one that I put in the installation board. That will give you the install/uninstall option.

For others going through this, the last post intall is: http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=25916.msg207320#msg207320

Now I'm getting:

!!Error in Package Installation

At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly  recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

9. Execute Modification ./Sources/Load.php Test failed
10. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/index.template.php Test failed

on the apply mod.

I'm tempted beyond all belief to just click Install Now, but I'll await your advice since this has sucked up a lot of hours already.  Thanks for all your help.

Can I ask why you removed TP at all during this normally simple upgrade procedure?  As with most updates of this nature you usually don't have to un-install any of the mods you've installed.  And then only have issues if you get a test failed error.

You can proceed, but you'll need to make all the additional code adjustments to those files manually.  I'd personally take a backup of those files now before the install.  Perform the manual installs of all the applicable code.  Proceed with the install and immediately upload those two files you've already 'patched'.

Okay, we can finally close this thread.  Thank you so much for all the help.

"Can I ask why you removed TP at all during this normally simple upgrade procedure?"  To be honest, I cannot recall all that I did.  Our site had been repeatedly hacked over the past three weeks, and I had a low confidence in every part of it.  Every folder had hacked files installed in them.  When things didn't go as planned, I went to your forums, started reading, and started trying things.  It all fell apart.  However, it looks good now, and I will run another back up before anything else changes.  Every time I run a back up in takes hours before it finishes.  You all were great, thank you so much.

OK... now it's marked as solved!  ;D

Just as a tip Toad you may want to think about setting up and keeping a test forum where you can keep a 'clone' of your live site files and mods. G6 has written a nice little how-to for using the clone site to refresh or replace the files on your live site that can be a lot easier than starting from scratch.

Sorry to add to this, but you also might want to speak to your host.  If 'hackers' are about to gain fundamental access to all your files and folders I would hazard to guess a host side issue or a compromisation of your account.

If its a shared hosting account it could be likely that it wasn't your site that got hacked. Your site could just be part of the aftermath of the hacker gaining access to another account on the same server.
