If you forum is sitting in that state, you have no choice to either restore from a backup, or go through the manual install instructions to see if all the changes to the files and the other files were uploaded etc.

How do I manually install TinyPortal (http://docs.tinyportal.co.uk/index.php?topic=29)

DonaldDasher it's not that difficult to do and it's something that anyone who is running an SMF/TP forum should know how to do, imho.
Take your time, read carefully and before you know it you'll get it done. :)

OK, I'll give it a try - but does anybody know what could have gone wrong?

was there a Tiny Portal upgrade I should have run rather than re-installing the latest version from scratch?

There's nothing wrong with the way you did it except for the fact that something didn't install correctly of course. There are a number of different reasons that could have happened but now that is has the important thing is to get your forum back up and running.

The manual install instruction will give you all the detail and direction you'll need, but you can post any questions that may come up along the way.

Here's one other very handy place to read to see if it may be of assistance to you... the article may give more detail than is needed in this case but it will likely help in your understanding of the overall process:

Another thing I should perhaps mention is that I had uploaded TP into the SMF folder - could this be what has caused the problem? Anyway, I've now removed all the TP files.

Should I try to backtrack and get SMF running again before attempting the TP manual install?

It sounds like you have a misunderstanding of how the install process for TP works.  :)

So just to be sure:
SMF must be up and running correctly first, then TinyPortal is installed into SMF by way of the SMF Package Manager.
... the only reason that you would upload the TP files any other way would be if you were doing a manual install and for that you would need to do as spelled out in the manual install doc.

OK, I've just about fixed SMF - and I'll then again attempt to re-install TP.

If I want my TP home page (index.php) in the root folder, how would I install TP to do this?

Your TP pages are part of SMF because TP is installed into SMF and not along side of it, so for an install of SMF/TP it's all in the same folder. (it can't work any other way.)

So I always have to have my own site index page?

OK, I'm trying to select the TP folder in the SMF - Admin - Browse Packages but I'm unable to actually select the folder itself - so do i select all the files within the folder instead?

If you would like to give me a temp admin login I'll take a look at what you have, if so send it to me by PM.

When going through the install process one of the first things that needs to be done is make a backup in case something goes wrong. When I try to do a backup using your SMF maintenance control panel it throws an error, "Error 500 - Internal server error"

See if you can do a backup of your db and let me know when it's finished.
... the TP package has been loaded into your SMF Package Manager but please do not try to install it until we have resolved the backup issue.

OK, I'll need to contact One and One, the hosting company.

I can access MySQL via the hosting company's control panel but I'm not sure how to back up the database.

OK, here's what you will end up needing to do:
Go into your 1and1 control panel and do a backup using your "phpMyAdmin" controls.
If you aren't sure about how to do that let us know before you try it.

Here's a simple instruction for the process:

Read the instruction at the link I posted and only do the steps that it calls for.

Thanks - I now have a downloaded backup of the database (70.6 MB) and have TP up and running.

My next question - how do I move everything into the root directory as I want TP as my home page?

For things on SMF, you have their docsection, and that is searchable.
