I am sure I saw some of this somewhere, but I cannot find it with search.
SMF version: 1.1.5
TP Version: 1.0.5 Beta
URL: http://www.deadboneplatoon.com
Theme: alienation_tp v 1.1
I have two issues:
1: how do I remove the poster's avatar from forum posts that populate the front page area (see attached illustration).
2: how do I change the front page so that it alternates background color in the front page posts just like in the forums?
Thanks!
PS: I, for some reason, am not getting email notifications of updates to posts from this forum.
Hi.. from what I know.. you did get a option for the articles to turn off the avatar from showing, but if you have it set to like show forum post..I don't think you get that option.
1a. Admin > Articles and Categories > Categories > Select a Category (The Categories can each have it's own options) > Cycle through the options and check the frontpage until you find one that suits what you need.
1b. Admin > Articles and Categories > Articles > Select an Article to edit > Options (Viewing options) > Here there are many options to choose from.
2. This will need to be defined in the .css of the theme. If nobody offers a working answer.. I will have a go later. I'm at work and can't do anything from here.
PS:
Maybe this would be better for another topic, in Feedback. We need more details: email provider, topics selected for Notification, TP.net account preferences.. etc.
These are not articles. They are posts in the forum that are shown on the front page. There is no option to turn off the avatar, from what I can find. The only front page options that turn off the avatar are a simple list of topics and one that requires another image and shifts the text to the right.
I have attached an image of my front page settings. I do not see anywhere to turn off forum articles author avatars.
Thats an option I've never used before.
I have mine set to: Featured article and front page blocks
and use some SSI to do the same thing, only without the avatar. You can have a look at my front page if you want. URL for my site under my avatar. If however, you feel that it could be included as an option, I would suggest it in the Suggestions/Feedback board.. Currently, it's not an option.
Try clicking layout types Normal Article w/o the icons.

Funny.. I'm sure I already suggested that ???
The reply was.. They are not articles. They are Forum Posts featured.
OK. Normal Article just changes the position of the avatar in the post and makes the background black.
Okay.. so thats firmly established?
What do you want to do next?
- Make a suggestion in the Suggestions board?
- Use some simple SSI to do something similar, SSI News for example?
- Hack the front page to get the desired result?
I'd personally make a feature option suggestion, or use the SSI.
For hacking the front page, try looking through the files in /Themes/Default/
- TPortal.template.php
- TPortalBlocks.template.php
- TPBlockLayout.template.php
I'm not sure which one it's in, I really haven't had time to check. Use the Find tool to search for Avatar and try commenting out those lines.
For example, TPortal.template.php
Find
// show authors avatar?
if(isset($story['options']['avatar']) && !empty($story['avatar']['image']))
{
$render .= '<div class="tp_avatar';
if($context['TPortal']['mycat']!='' || !empty($context['TPortal']['is_front']))
$render .= '_category';
$render .= '"><a href="' . $story['poster']['href'] . '" title="' . $story['poster']['name'] . '">' . $story['avatar']['image'] . '</a></div>';
}
Commented out
// show authors avatar?
/* if(isset($story['options']['avatar']) && !empty($story['avatar']['image']))
{
$render .= '<div class="tp_avatar';
if($context['TPortal']['mycat']!='' || !empty($context['TPortal']['is_front']))
$render .= '_category';
$render .= '"><a href="' . $story['poster']['href'] . '" title="' . $story['poster']['name'] . '">' . $story['avatar']['image'] . '</a></div>';
}
*/
I'm not sure if that is the correct file or area.. I just found that in my file but I can't upload the changes to check it while I'm at work.

I will do that, however, it could take some time, if at all, before that feature would be implemented.

This would be the best stop-gap measure, but I don't have a clue how to accomplish it.

I believe I have looked at that file and could find nothing that changed the front page. I will look again.
edit: Actually I do not see a TPortal.template.php with this theme.

If a Custom file isn't included with the theme, then it will use the default theme files.. always.

Here is a simple code that I use in several PHP blocks/articles on my home page. Each one features news from a particular board. There are scripts that will pull news from several boards. These simply use an array.
ssi_boardNews($board = 27.0, $limit = 4, $start = null, $length = 300, $output_method = 'echo');
- board = board ID number, found by hovering over the board title, the ID is displayed in the notification area of your browser.
- limit = number of topics to pull
- length = character count, ie; 300 letters
You can have a look through the Block Code Snippets board where you can probably find snippets that will have more control than the above. It works well enough for me.
What type of block do I use for SSI? I select SSI Function and I get a list of preset functions. If I select NONE, then nothing appears in the box.
Edit: Got it! PHPBlock works.
Thanks for your help!
Almost....almost. The block works fine on the front page, but now it is showing in every article, even though I have not checked the box for it to show in visibility settings. In fact, there is no front page option in the article visibility settings.
You'll need to play with the options. I have no idea how you have it all set up.
i'm now on my Blackberry... I'll try to look in on this when I get home.
Well, I can't find any option that turns off the SSI in articles. It seems to have attached itself to every article. ZTN, I can give you admin access if you think it would help. I'm completely stumped.
PM me.. I don't have long though.
Done. And Thanks!
these are the block settings:
If I select "Do not use SMF Templates" it turns off the news in every article.
I figured it out. I changed it from a Frontpage Block to a Lower Block and now it works. Apparently, with Alienation_tp 1.1, front page blocks are shown in all articles. this is probably something Bloc should address.
I don't think this has anything at all to do with Alienation.
The code I posted will work in a php block or single article.. It should have no affect from any theme.
I have 1 News Front block and 2 single articles on my home page, I did also have 2 Reviews blocks which featured just the topic titles, authors and dates in the left panel. These have now been replaced with Dragooons Reviews Snippets from his Reviews module.
All of which worked fine in any theme.. bearing in mind my home page is set...

This topic has now moved away from Alienation and I've moved it to Support instead.
I hope this helps.. If you need to continue with any Alienation problems, please start a new topic in the Alienation board :)
