Title: Major CRASH!
Post by: joelgomez on June 19, 2008, 02:20:18 AM
I was using SMF with TP and everything sudenly crashed.

When typing the URL to enter to the web site the following error showed up:

"Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later."

By email I received the following warning:

"Suject: Club Radical Off-Road 4x4: SMF Database Error!
There has been a problem with the database!
MySQL reported:"

My web hosting service provider told me:

Hello Joel,

It seems like your SMF script has become corrupt or your settings have changed.

Because it is hard to diagnose the problem without knowing how you set up this forum, I suggest that you re-install the forum from scratch.

If you have any other information that might help, please let us know.

Regards,
Richard

Following the recomendation, I upgraded SMF to 1.1.5. Everything went fine through the upgrade process, but at the end, when typing http://www.radical4x4.com.mx/smf107/index.php i see the following error:

"Unknown column 'a.attachmentType' in 'field list'"

I guess the problem is that TINY PORTAL was ON... and I had no chance to turn it OFF. I do not know if I should upgrade also TINY PORTAL (I do not remember which version was I using), and HOW should I do it.

My site has been down for 72 hours and all my users are calling me to urge me to fix it. If it is a complex solution, I'm willing to pay to someone for qualified and prompt help.

You should be seeking help from the SMF site to get your site up and running. Once you've done that, then you can decide which TP you want to install by coming here and reading about whats new, or what you are looking for.

QuoteIt appears that you do need to reinstall TP.

Now your site is up and running, I sugget returning to the thread on TP that IchBin has responded to you on.

IchBin, Tony at SMF says that I should reinstall TP. How can I do it? What version shall I use?

You must use the same version you used before when you broke the site.

How to install you find in our doc section.

Its not available for download because its a old release, but if you disable your blocks, does the error go away?

Then you need to get your SMF working. Once you have done that, then come back here and we will help you with your TP setup.

IchBin, couldnt be the problem that TP was ON when the system crashed and now that I've upgraded SMF to 1.1.5 something needs to be done with TP?

First off you need to fix your SMF forum part, when you have everytning working there, we will help you with the TP part.
But until you have SMF visible again, we cant do anything to help you from here.

Hi Crip!

I already went through that process. I finished upgrade.php with success, but after that, everything went wrong. I can't see one single page of my site.

G6... I published the same post on both forums at the same time. Tony said that I should get fixed TP and "I sugget returning to the thread on TP that IchBin has responded to you on".

I'm still in troubles.  :-\

Clearly its a bit of misunderstanding here..the error "a.attachmentType" suggest an error in the attachments table, meaning you HAVE to get SMF checked for this first (its a pure SMF table), then re-install TP which will read the old TP tables for you.

I suspect you had a crash that rendered that table corrupt, might like to try repairing tables manually in the database before doing anything else.

This can be marked as solved. joelgomez contacted me at the smf site and I took care of the error. Now all is well :)

Sure thing G6 ;)

Joel tried to run the repair tables operation at the phpmyadmin as per the advice that he was given here but that it didn''t work. When I checked out the database I saw something very strange that puzzeled me. The smf version at the smf_settings table showed as being at 1.0.7. I asked him how he performed the upgrade and according to what he told me it was done right, the files overwritten and then running the upgrader.

Anyway, I re-did the upgrade procedure once again from the begin and during the running of the upgrader I got some error messages like that mysql bug with the smileys error, some db tables being corrupted like the smf_seesion table and a couple of others, which I dropped and recreated again, after making a full backup first of course. That solved the issue. I ran the upgrader once more and this time it worked as it should.

That was it more or less G6 :)

Then more or less he skipped the upgrade step from the old 1.0.7 to the RC version of SMF and then to the Final version.
Thats what gave the errors. The upgrade needed to go through 3 steps with the DB and not just 2  ;)

Anyway, thank you for taking the time and post up what you did.

Yes, but I believe you can upgrade directly from a version of the 1.0 series to a version of the 1.1 series, or the 2.0 series for that matter without first upgrading to the RC versions . Anyway, what I found strange though, it was that inspite of him runing the upgrader with success the first time, the database didn''t get upgraded at all but it remained the same. I have never come across something like that. The upgrader is supposed to upgrade the db, I mean that is its role, right?

And you are welcome :)
