Title: possibility of a help / faq document for install issues?
Post by: sandspyderx on May 21, 2008, 09:32:27 AM
Hi again,

I guess every post here is flamebait ...

I can't seem to find a document (not forum post) in regard to install procedures, faq, etc.

Would it be difficult to add a document next to the download for the install file which
gives more details for installing tp on smf.  This could include the regular issues people
have ...

Sifting through post, after post, after post is really annoying, and the same questions are also annoying people who maintain the forums.

I hope this is a bit more constructive ...

There is a whole damn Docs board out there.....http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?board=85.0

For TP 1, the Docs are under construction. And will probably be out once it hits a stable release.

This is what I am talking about, people beeing rude and NOT very helpful.

http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=6771.0  is the relevant doc.  But it is NOT consise and it does NOT do everything to make the thing work.  This is not up to date.

http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=23127.0 is only the mods, not the ftp or what permissions need to be applied.

http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?board=131.0 is irrelevant

http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?board=131.0 is irrelevant

OK, again.  And guys.  Stop being rude, stop referring people to the search or forums, without the right answers.

I am running the latest SMF and want to install the latest TP.  NO documentation, just rude replies to my posts.

Where are the forum admins or moderators?  If I want to get flamed, I go to  skiddie site, not a professional site.

I need help.  If there is an answer, show it.  If I want to buy milk, send me to a shop that sells milk.  Don't tell me to go shopping!

The installation guide is relevant and it is up-to-date.

The Modinstructions are the file edits you need to make, not the FTP/Chmod stuff.

if you want to install latest TP (Assuming 1.0.5), You can follow the installation guide and it works.

And what is the problem you're having anyway? And no one was being rude.

Dragooon, You have been here long enough to know better. You are helpful.. But we do need to keep a polite professional atmosphere.

Thank you.

Sorry about that.

Hi again, my apologies.  I don't want to fight.

1. Clean install of SMF 1.15

2. I wish to install TP 1.05

3. As was established yesterday, there seem to be issues with my web host and the SMF mod installer.  The only alternative way is to install manually.

4. The TP file I am going to install from is TPv1.05beta1.zip

5. I unzipped it locally, and now have a bunch of files and folders.

6. according to http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=6771.0:

6.1. manual_tp_install.php is present in the root of the new folder

6.2 I uploaded the whole lot into the same location where SMF resided

 6.3. Ran manual_tp_install.php

6.4 The link to http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=14195 refers to
Mod instructions for TP 0.9.8 and SMF 1.1 - 1.1.2.   -----> Revised at end!!!

which is not TP 1.05 installed on SMF 1.1.5 ...

since this is up to date info, according to Dragoon, I will take the time to change all the
files.  If there is a thing that does not correlate, what do I do? (I better back up the files
       first)

I will post again to let everyone know whether it worked or not.

Thank you.

---------- Revisions, I just added later to keep the info in one post ------------

Revision 1: 6.4 above should refer to http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=23127.0 for the modding

The modinstructions for TP 1 are at http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=23127.0
It would be same for SMF 1.1.5

quick question:

the mod procedure refers to a file called

      $themedir/index.template.php

There is no such file in the root of the 'themes' directory.
Although the file appears in the other themes directories.

The next step refers to:

      $boarddir/Themes/babylon/index.template.php

I would assume that $themedir refers to the currently selected default theme folder ...

Can someone confirm this?  This would also apply to:

- $boarddir    : the directory where SMF is installed
- $sourcedir   : the directory where the source files are (under $boarddir usually)
- $themedir   : the directory where the themes files are (under $boarddir usually)

I am sure that this is clearly explained somehwere else, though ... especially on the SMF side, since this is the structure fo SMF.

SSX

Unfortunately most of us are not developpers, and thus this would help a bit.

$boarddir is your SMF root as you said
$sourcedir is your Sources folder under SMF root as you said
$themedir is the assumed to be the default theme folder($boarddir/Themes/default).

I keep making mistakes ... especially with replacing text.  The search functions in text editiors (WIN32) just highlits a limited number of characters.  Pasting then only replaces these ... Is there a nice utility that can assist me?  I went through 8 text editors and all user the default Win search app.

What woul happen if I just CHMOD'ed the relevant files now to 777 and ran the installer inside SMF?  Would that maybe work?

The source of my install problems were problems with my host and SMF.  For some rerason, although the ftp and username were correct, all processes regarding copying, unzipping and changing permissions failed.

This workaround / manual install worked for me:

Notes:
SMF 1.15 and TP 1.15 beta
I did everything on a clean install, thus no other mods, custome themes, etc.

1. unzip 'TPv1.05beta1.zip' locally.

2. upload these files with a FTP program (filezilla) to the install folder of the SMF install,

3. Create 'temp' folder: ./Packages/temp/

4. Change (chmod) the permissions for ./Packages/temp/ to 777  (you can use filezilla for this)

5. Run 'manual_tp_install.php' online (this might prove not to be necessary)

6. Changed the permissions (CHMOD) the following files to 777   (you can use filezilla for this)

   ./index.php
   ./Sources/Load.php
   ./Themes/default/index.template.php
   ./Themes/babylon/index.template.php
   ./Sources/Subs.php
   ./Sources/ManagePermissions.php
   ./Sources/Security.php
   ./Sources/Errors.php
   ./Themes/default/style.css
   ./Themes/default/Help.template.php
   ./Sources/Profile.php
   ./SSI.php
   ./Sources/BoardIndex.php
   ./Sources/QueryString.php
   ./Sources/Subs-Post.php
   ./Sources/Admin.php

7. Log in to your SMF site, go to your admin console, open the 'Packages' manager and  upload 'TPv1.05beta1.zip'
   'Download Packages' tab.

8. Apply the mod.

9. Change all the permissions in (6) above back to 644.

10. Voila!  (A block called 'Tinyportal' appeard on the left hand side in the Forum Admin page)

This is a workaround, but it is faster and safer than modding all the files yourself.  This basically works around the ftp/chmod issues the SMF package manager has with some web hosts.

I hope this helps others.
