My website portal is here: www.reenactor.net/forums/ (http://www.reenactor.net/forums/) I am trying to get TP to work the way I need it to... In fact, I'm what I'm stymied on is navigation... I have done some temporary navigation across top of pages in my WWI area (http://www.reenactor.net/forums/index.php?page=10), but it's not what I want, more of temporary solution.
What I'm after
On my website, I have it broken down by time periods (using categories)... Anyway, I would like to make a separate menu for every time period, plus maybe one for general articles. I want these menus to ONLY show up in THAT time period. Within the separate menus, I then need them to point to certain TP article which correspond to pages on my old site.
Anyway, I have tried to do it by making the menu into an article and also as a script box... I tried checking the box that says show only in this category... None is working for me... Arrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhh! Any ideas?
Best, Marsh
Sounds like most of that would have to be done manually, I probably am wrong, but this is a pretty big task...but making them and categorizing them to suit your needs would be neat, in addition I would love to see the progress f this can be coded using boards, this would be neat
In addition, I love history :)
sounds like you need Sarges mod for the shared forum..
can be found here:

but you must register to download.. ;)

So, there's no way to have it substitute the menus whenever someone changes to a new time period? :(
I made the kludgey work-around, but I really just want to make the main menu go away and have a different one in its place. This stuff is really complicated. When it works,
it's great!! When it doesn't, I'm banging my head on the keyboard. And converting all my pages over has been a long-winded process. Still have much to do, but the big one, WWII is almost done (at least to the point where my assistants can help). I just need to get this navigation thing straightened out. :-\

Do I need different Forums? I have it broken down nicely there. I've had SMF as a forum for over a year now. I want the TP part to behave this way to navigate my website. Or am I missing something?
no. you wont need different forums, his mod shows the cats, as a separate forum view. I really do like it for "large forum catagories" and it sounds exactly what you are looking for..
if you need an example, go to his site and take a look around. think you will be very happy with it.. ;)
and if you can manage, you might be able to leave off the main menu navigation.. it would be perfect..
if it isnt, then post back and let everyone know.. good luck!! ;)
I am right on the edge of not understanding this. I will try tomorrow... just a little crispy tonight. Also, like I said, I don't understand what you're saying (I'm the village idiot) in how to do this...
I did kind of get frustrated that I can't get the Categories to stay in the order I want... I know how I need it to be, I just don't understand all of this. :(
Will look in morning and try and figure it out after some caffeine.
Forget separate forums. That takes you in a completely different direction than you want to go. I think things can be a whole lot simpler.
Each time frame should be an article category. Then create a block each category, with links to the articles in that category. Set the block to only display when in that category.
QuoteI tried checking the box that says show only in this category... None is working for me
What happens when you check the box that says show only in this category?
QuoteI can't get the Categories to stay in the order I want
I don't understand. If you make your own block with links, you have complete control.
that mod jpdeni, makes it "look" as tho it is separate forums.. the thing with the mod is that you can do this with categories, and use different themes with the categories, separating long board index's, and creating a look like he is referring to.. I am testing it out with Sarge.. I had it on my site a while back, and know that it will work.. I know that you can use a block navigation with it, and therefor he wont need to use the main navigation, which he wishes to get rid of in the first place. he could tie an article to each category, that way he gets what he wants as his request would be covered by the mod.. its a slick trick and very good for people that have extra long forums, preventing massive scrolling and stopping users from getting bored or tired of scrolling to hunt the content that they are looking for.. one of the best mods I have really liked.. 8)
I'm not pushing him, but if this is what he wants, I think it would be a good thing.. if not he could try it your way.. ;)
It's just that there is no need to add another mod. What he wants to do can be done within TP.
If he wants to use another mod, then we can't help him here, because we only support TP here.
hmm well you are right and i was just merely pointing him to the mod that would help him out.. not sure how you would go about with just tp to show only the cats.. but i do know how to make the nav links..
lol just getting eyes opened.. morning!! :D ;)

I did that. I thought... "Hey, that'll work!" but alas...

It doesn't work, thus causing mass frustration. And I tried checking and unchecking different boxes :-0 I dunno what's going on. I thought that would work logically.
QuoteIt doesn't work
That doesn't tell me what happens. What happens, exactly? Does it not show at all? Does it show on every article? Does it show on the front page? Does it show on the forum? Does it show on the wrong category? What *exactly* happens?

Absolutely NOTHING. No show anywhere. I tried making it both as an single article and as a script box (which had worked for other stuff I was having problems with). It didn't show anywhere. I was a bit curious about if it DID show how to make the main menu not show there, but figured it was more important to get the menu to show.
QuoteIt didn't show anywhere.
That's what I needed to know. :)
I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to, so it could be a bug. I'll see if someone who knows more about the innards of the thing can confirm this.
Okay. I got it worked out.
Selecting the category should work. It doesn't.
But what does work is selecting the articles within the category. Yes, it's a drag to have to do that, but until the category thing gets worked out, you'll need to set the appropriate block to appear with each new article.

Are you saying I have to make a block for EACH article? By this I mean, I have 10+ categories w/ at LEAST 4-5 articles in each. At LEAST, Some have a LOT of articles (WWII for example. Does this mean I'll need to make a menu article for each article to pair them???
QuoteAre you saying I have to make a block for EACH article?
No. A block for each category.
When you set up where the block will be shown, instead of selecting the category, look over to the right of the page where all of the articles you've created are listed. Select all of the articles that are in the category you want the block to appear in.
I just realized that you're using the older version of TP, which only allows you to set one article per block. If you upgrade to 1.0.5, you'll be able to create one block per category.

How many of my mods won't work if I do that? Also, how stable is 1.0.5?? I know it's still in beta. I am just afraid if I do that, it will suddenly be WAY more work getting it back to where it is now? :-0
Try it on a separate installation to play with it. I don't think it'll mess with any of your mods.
Haven't been able to get v. 98 to uninstall >:-0 Of course, I AM an idiot...

sturmkatze, what ZTN is showing you is how you manually remove the code from your files. reverted install steps.
An ather way ( easier according to me ) but you WILL end up with loosing any other custom codes or mods you have installed.
Simply replace the SMF files with new ones from the their big upgrade package. That leavs you with all clean fresh files to install the new TP v1.0.5
After you have replaced the SMF files with new ones, and after you have installed TP, you can go ahead with installing other mods.
Your right, but that doesent mean im always thinking of you and are in love :P

I never suggested such a thing... But you're clearly thinking... :P

Aiiiheeeee, something I was sort of hoping to avoid. I thought it was supposed to be relatively painless to upgrade this. My problem when trying to do it is that there's not even an option to uninstall in the "browse packages" area and in the "View and Remove Installed Packages" area, when I click "uninstall," I get this message below?!
This package cannot be uninstalled, because there is no uninstaller!
Please contact the mod author for more information.
sturmkatze the process is not very hard to do at all, the main thing is to take your time and follow the directions carefully. (in reverse order for this case)
You'll find it a good learning experience and in the end you should have a much greater understanding of how the files on your site function.
IMHO all forum owners should do a manual install (or uninstall) at least 2-3 times so that they do gain that better understanding of the files.
Your issue of not being able to uninstall has been covered many times. Upload the packge from here again and replace your current package in the packages folder.

And that, right there was
it. :-) Still won't uninstall of course, but now I'm at least seeing that option. One step closer.
Immer etwas! Thanks!! ~

Okay, 1.05 is in there, but... now the blocks won't show. I guess I need to hunt around. And YES, I set the visible options to certain pages, etc. The block is active. I don't get what else is wrong...
You should have removed all Tp.98 files / folders / data before the initial install of Tp105..
did that. It's weird, I go it to work on ONE of my time areas WWI, but not others, say "Frontier" I don't get it. I thought I had settings the same. <http://www.reenactor.net/forums/>
I am sure something is not checked or is. The idea of being able to set it for every category or diff pages is perfect for what I want....
Just keep playing around with the settings and you soon will know it all well --
Okay, never mind. I found it. I had named everything frontier "something" and the main page of that area is named "The Frontier Period -- Main" D'oh!

I hear you. Someday, if I ever get the time, I am going to start working on some tutorials for this stuff (at least for my assistants)... it's not hard ONCE you can find stuff, but often, it's very cryptic :-0 Oh well, it's working and that's what I need...
GO TP!!!
