I installed TP last night on my default theme and had several errors. I followed the instructions about the code that had to be changed and I still had problems. I deleted TP and am going to start over but I have a question on whether or not TP can be used with the theme I am using which is Innocence by Crip.
If TP won't work with these other themes then I will not proceed and install TP.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for starting your own topic. I'll do my best to answer your questions but you've left out some info. :) What TP version are you using? With TP 0.9.8 the themes needed to be modified to work with TP. With TP 1.0 almost all themes will work without being modified. And I'm not 100% sure, but I would say 99% of Crips themes were made to work with TP 0.9.8, which means they should still work for TP 1.0 :)
I haven't decided what TP version to use yet because at this point basically it is all greek to me and new territory. I have only had the forum up and running for about two weeks now too and before that had NO experience with running a forum. I learned a TON in the last two weeks but now I want more capabilities. I am hoping TP can accomplish this for me.
I guess I should first see if TP will do what I want which is pretty much what this site does but I also want to have movie trailers and maybe music and polls and stuff on the front page. From what I read I THINK TP can do all this, correct?
As far as the version goes, I guess I should use 1.0 if all themes work with it, huh?
Thanks for the very quick response, I have been trying to get this figured out since last night! :)
I would advise you to setup a test forum. You can install either version and give it a test run without touching or messing something up on your live board. For the most part it looks like TP can do what you're asking. It will take some work though.
Yep, I do have a test site and that is where I installed it. It caused some major and fatal errors and I couldn't resolve it even when I deleted TP completely (or at least tried to). So my test site was then deleted and set back up this morning to start over. Right now it is brand new with just my mods on it again and no TP at yet.
As far as you saying it will "take some work" THAT is the part I will need help with. So I guess I need to know if I can get that kind of help here otherwise I will be floundering around not quite knowing what to do next. I am loving all the new stuff and learning, I thrive on it, so I have no issue with figuring things out but that can only get me so far, ya know what I mean?
Just an update: I installed version 1.0.5 beta and it installed perfectly on my test site. But as mentioned here on the forum, I did have to change the language from english-utf8 to english to get the TinyPortal text in the admin to show up. No problem there. Now I am just trying to figure out how to use this.
Thanks for the help.
Most issues during an install of TP to the SMF forums are related to non default settings.
Allways use the Defaults that comes with SMF package when you install TP or any other mod for that matter.
With default we mean Default SMF Core theme and English ISO and not UTF8 as a lot of mods doesent include the utf8 encoding.
So when you install TP, Make sure you have the SMF Default Core as your default theme, and then English language set to standard and not utf8.
When you have everything working in the default, go ahead and install the theme you want, and add the code for the mods installed to the default to your new theme. Most of the times it's the language strings in the modification.english.php that needs to have the strings in the new template, and also if the template have the Display.template.php and Boardindex.template.php ( most common in most themes) .
You have to check the XML files in the mods packages to see what files you need to add the code they have to the new theme.
OK, I came across this site by accident last night when I saw the link posted on a webmaster forum. This site looks a lot like what I am trying to accomplish as far as the layout and it just so happens to also be about movies. http://www.obsessedwithfilm.com/
Can TP create a site that is like this?
SassMcG kind of rude do hijack some one elses thread with a compleat diffrent question even.
the answer to your question is Yes, but before you continue with questions on this site, i suggest you read the docs and the posting guides we have ;)
HUH? I started this thread so how can I be hijacking MY OWN THREAD? Am I to start an entirely new thread when I am asking questions about MY situation? I simply have a few basic questions that I am trying to ask about TP before I spend hours and hours on something that won't work for me.
Now I don't mean to be rude either but I think I will move on and forget this. It's too much trouble and getting chastised every time I ask a question is ridiculous. Thanks anyway.
:2funny: Think it was to early in the morning, im sorry for my post, should have been in another topic and i managed to mix them up :uglystupid2:

OK, it's cool. I understand about early in the morning goofiness. I have done it several times myself.
SassMcG, we have a few guidelines here. We don't try to jam them down peoples throats, so its hard to put it in a nice way. But your additional question here is off topic. We ask that people keep to the original topic. And additional (non-related) questions need to be in a new topic. Even if they are your own topics. This helps keep the search nice and tidy. So someone doesn't see a topic that relates to their question, and then go to read it only to find out the topic goes way out in the bush. Not trying to be rude when we say these things. All we ask is that people follow the guidelines. Thanks.
OK, understood and that makes sense.
