Title: DL Manager Setup
Post by: bas123 on April 16, 2008, 05:04:33 AM
I am trying to set up permissions for upload/download.

I have set up a category hierarchy allowing Global Moderator access to all categories called "Articles & Images" and set two sub categories within that with the same permissions.

Then I set up a folder called "File Sharing" with two sub categories, "Members Only", and "Public".
with what I think are the appropriate permissions.

Here's the permissions I've set:

The idea being to make:
downloading only of Files in "File Sharing>Public" available to Guests
and downloading & uploading available to Logged in Members.

AND THEN to retain the Articles & Images Categories for Participating authors/members (Moderator) to submit articles and their appropriate images (for front page etc)

When I log in as a Guest, I see the files and can download and a "Stats |" link -  ;D
When I log in as Admin, I see all including "Stats | Upload" link -  ;D
When I log in as a Global Moderator, I see all including "Stats | Upload" link -  ;D

But when I log in as a regular member, I see the same links as a Guest: "Stats |" link -   :(
IE: No Upload..

So the questions:
1) Do I have the Permissions set wrong, or is the upload feature only available to Moderators and above?
2) Is the hierarchy correct?

   Thoughts?

Is this with the standard groups or are they groups made by you ?

I don't believe there were any groups when I started...

I created and set them myself.

If there was an update, it would have been posted by now. We would appreciate you not bumping your topic within a 24 hour period. Thanks.

All due respect, G6 asked me a question which suggested a response. If he (or someone else) is researching, I would simply like to know that.

I am happy to wait if the responder replied that he/she will look into it and get back or something along those lines.

I am beginning to understand these TP forum protocols, and have the greatest respect for the time and expertise I've gotten.

So, TP Sheriff, what is the appropriate time to wait before "bumping"?

QuoteWe would appreciate you not bumping your topic within a 24 hour period. Thanks.

The Sheriff wrote it.
And just because me or someone else ask a question to get some more info doesent mean we sit and do a lot of investigations after a reply.
All depends how "important" the question is, if we feel that a search by the member would lead to more answers to check and see if These answers will give the answer.
We dont run the forums for you, nor do we run to every question asked or replied to, we get to the questions/replies when we do,
Wait to someone answers, during the waiting time, you as anyone else can sit and try finding it out by searching, readin the docs, and maybe you find what we find to.
We dont know every answer from the top of our heads, most of the times we to have to search for several days, if not in posts but google or even the code it self to find out what causes errors.

Most of the time we spend here, we have to ask the members to read the rules, read the posting guides, and use the search, if we didnt have to do that 50 times a day, we would have more time to spend on the issues themselfs ;)

So, investigate, try and see what you can figure out your self, if i remember correct you are helping some one other to get a forum up, then help them..  :P

It's all good guys...

FYI, I did (and do) research both here, and at SMF, or the site offering the mod before asking in the forum.

I found the Docs on this subject did not go into this detail. And since this and so many of the SMF sites are setup with a strong infrastructure for the download feature, I thought it appropriate to ask.

Also, newbies do not know when something not going as they expect is a flaw in their work or a bug... especially when working with newly released or Beta software.

Also, the results when searching for answers, can sometimes be a bit daunting as one must then filter thru a lot of material.

Just keep on keep'in on.. If you can come up with some answers on my request, I'll appreciate it very much!
