Title: Message: not writable!
Post by: Smoky on April 14, 2008, 11:41:36 PM
here is what i did: i created a new test area on my domain, u0ploaded my db from an active forum, then installed fresh install of the 1.1.4, then a upgrade, then got the new tp into the packages.. when i tried to apply, i get this nice message:

You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!

now, seeing that, i went thru, both via ftp and my file manager, and made sure, according to smf, that they were all chmoded.. however i still get this message. host issue?? server hicup?? or is tp just not liking me again..  :o :'(

note: i did run the repair settings.php file also, and i did manage to get the new version up on my local test area.. mmm  :P

You will need to go through the files again. Either 777 or 755 depending on file ownership.

Definitely a server issue. I'm betting its something to do with the sub domain. If you don't put a copy of it in a sub domain, and just put a copy in a folder. Does it work then?

So instead of test.yourdomain.com you put the install in yourdomain.com/test/ do you have the same problem?

you might be right ICH.. i have the sub at tg.pixelbypaint, and the new one is pixelbypaint.com/alpha so.. maybe it might not be server, perhaps i could move the folder to the subdomain and see what happens when i run the repair setting again.. never thought bout it, just stuck it up.. not enough sleep i guess..  ;)

will post back on what happens then, and thanks!!  :D

hmm ok.. i did a search, but i am still having a issue on getting the apply button to work.. i cfan push apply, it asks for the ftp info, i imput it, then i get this:

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/lisa2/public_html/tg/alpha/Packages/temp/./tp_install.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/lisa2/public_html/tg/alpha/Sources/Packages.php on line 552

there is no other post here for this, so any ideas?? i did search for the error, since the release has been out for a bit.. any ideas now??

mmm maybe i didnt search for key words.. found something like this:

http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=21982.msg178505#msg178505

so guess i will be reading.. whoohoo..  :P :D  again, i guess it goes to permissions, so will have to wait till tomorrow when i can grab my host.. mmmm smoky isnt happy but off to play with her ps..

laterzz guys  ;)

mmm ok.. new update: i forgot the temp folder.. so i gave it one, chmoded it to the 777, got tp installed but i see no tp unless i go to the admin>packages.. mmm happier reading for me eh??

:P

mmm im not too happy.. everything i pulled up recommends to change the language to english.. (did the repair settings.php file too) if i go to admin?server settings>core feature, like you guys say, it is saying english too.. so what is the new fix for this?? everything is saying english, there is no other option for other changes.. or ?? will keep reading.. check back in a few.. maybe its under my nose, but i cant see it yet.. got a light??  ;)

You should upload and run repair_settings.php.

http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?tools
Documentation for repair_settings.php-
http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=663

Note: Delete repair_settings.php after using it.

did that Jpg.. so?? its set to english, and i still dont even see tp's copywrite much less a box that even says tp in the admin area, even if it was blank at least then i would know its there..

well i know its there and applied so.. but i dont know why it isnt showing.. everything is set to english  :-\

btw: on this part here:

Quote

When installing SMF via Fantastico in cPanel, the Language settings seem to default to UTF-8 characters.
This results in some text not showing in some parts of SMF and TP, including the TinyPortal Admin links.

this site was never istalled this way from the "fantastico".. still dont understand why i have no tp..  :'(

mmmm im uploading the large upload for all the themes now..  :buck2:

i have replaced the language files in the default twice now, and just bout ready to say the heck with it for the night, and go screw up something on my ps.. so.. bout that time of night.. maybe it will work tomorrow on its own and we can all call it a tp miracle.. :'( :-\

what gets me, is its not showing up, and there is no errors, but its showing as it is installed.. perhaps if i uninstall and re install?? who knows??  :-\

ok, so i installed the v1 someh9ow and it never made any changes at all to the site??? is that what happened, cuz this is what im getting when i go to attempt to un install..

Dont know why threads like this have to be so long.

Permission errors all the way, if you cant change the permissions manually through FTP or Cpanel, it's a host issue, we cant do anything to help as it's not a TP error

iy isnt a permission error G6.. its deffinately my wifi.. i can post on a forum, but i cant upload a pic, i cant upload a zip file, nada.. so..  ;) sorry so long to figure that out.. didnt know it had rained due to its 1:20 am here and i just let my dog out.. he came in wet..  ;)

it IS permission issue, your not the OWNER of the files and folders.
There for, everything that is done THROUGH the scripts will work as the OWNER of the files will be APACHE = server, but you cant change, edit, or remove as your NOT the owner.
That is permission errors and issues, and you need to contact the host and ask them to make you the owner of the files and folders, not the apache

the permissions can be changed, they are sitting at 777 right now..  ;) both my ftp and my cpannel can change them from 666 to 777..

what has happened, due to my wifi internet connection, is i have net, then i dont. so what happens to the files is they are getting cut short, or not there. i cant upload a thing right now, because of the dipping.

my host is playing darts in new york tonight, not available. i have told him what has happened, so i have faith that if he sees i dont own the files, then he can reset my account, but i know that if i cant upload a picture to imageshak, tinypic etc. or a zip file little over 1mb, it is due to net connection issues.  i had to post 5 times elsewhere tonight just to get my post to go..

but either way, i will be good to go by, i hope tomorrow, i have to have no clouds here or i get crappy signal for internet.. wish it wasnt so, but sharing a internet service right now is the best i can do..  :-\ :P  wish i knew bout the weather before i attempted this tonight.. sorry for any problems..  :buck2:
