Title: TP105: Box and theme trouble!
Post by: misjka on April 11, 2008, 06:50:54 PM
Hi!

Finally, as I found that a Swedish translation was available , I decided to go ahead and make that 105 install :). The installation went just fine, but I've ended up with some annoying "features"  ???

First off, all blocks but two (one at the left and one at the right) where upshrinked for the admin user before I went ahead with the 098 uninstall and 105 install. Those two blocks I now try to upshrink as well, but every time I refresh the page (regardless of how I do it - by browser refresh or by clicking any urls on the page) they persist in popping up in extended mode  :o.

So, I went for the block admin panel and decided to test to turn one of them off (a script block). At first it seemed fine since it didn't turn up at all on the page - just as supposed to. But as I then try to turn it on again, it simply refuses  >:(. The red dot turns green as I click on it, but the block doesn't turn up on the page and as I return to the block admin panel it's still red  :o...
OK, what a sucker  :uglystupid2:! So, I go ahead and make a copy of that block, trying to fool the system... BUT, the same thing happens with the copy: It persists in extended mode too :o...

Maybe this has something to do with my theme (I'm using  the Millenium TP theme for 098)? At least that was my thought... But as I turned on the default Core theme, it still behaved the same way  :o... I also copied the TPBlockLayout.template file from the default theme into my theme folder without any changes noticed...

So my question is: Is this a theme matter or something else?

Thanks,

If you know you have uninstalled the old TP properly ( very important ) and that the new install were made correctly with all files added and the TP code to the SMF files got added there should be no problem.
To be sure, point your browser to the manual_tp_install.php and let it update the DB one more. If that doesent work you have to test with another browser, the issues you describe about not saving the settings, not any visible changes when you add or remove things from the site indicate a full browser cache and temp internet files and also cookies folder. Try and clear everything in your browser or even try another browser, restart it after you have cleared everything and check again if it works now.

Yes, as I mentioned before the 098 uninstall and 105 install went just fine, at least as I could see from the output as I applied the TP in Package mgr... To be secure, I followed your tip and did the manual_tp_install.php, which also went fine as far as I could see... I have also removed temp files in the browser, and have also tested IE (which I NEVER use on a regular basis) but the problem remains  :(. I now also recognize that I cannot extend the blocks permanently that are upshrinked, i.e. it's the opposite problem with them than with the two blocks I told about before...

OK, so now I'm in kind of deep... sh(beep)t  :buck2:.

Since I'm quite dependant of my TP portal, I decided to go ahead for the alternative procedure that Bloc mentions here (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=23026.0). I.e., I decided to use the SMF upgrade.php.

But first, of course, I uninstalled the three mods I had installed (e.g. FelBlog) and then I uploaded some fresh copies of the SMF files before running the upgrade. After that, I uploaded fresh copies of the TP files and applied the installer in Package Mgr.

Weird thing, though, everything in the upgrade and install seemed to work just fine all the way... BUT, TP simply refuses to show up  :o :o! No boxes, no nothing except for the forum boards, on the frontpage... And not a trace of TP in the Admin panel either  :o :o, well, except that the Package Mgr tells me that the package is installed  ???

So, now I'm quite lost here...  :'( :-\

Would appreciate some assistance here to work this out...

Run the install again, using the default theme using package manager.
If this doesn't work, do a manual install.

Just a question, what SMF version are you using?

Thanks,

OK, so first I go ahead and uninstall TP in Package Mgr (before I try to install it again, I mean)? Suddenly, as I try to do so (uninstall, that is), I get error messages saying that the test install didn't succeed and that there are 16 files that were caught by this error (e.g. ./index.php, Sources/Load.php etc)...
Strange thing, I think, since I updated the SMF files before (with the small update package (http://download.simplemachines.org/))  I applied the TP install in package manager (when no other mods were applied either, just a clean SMF) in the step before, and the TP install went just fine...? What kind of clue does that gives you, and what should I do about it?

About the manual install you mentioned, could you please be a little more specific how to do that (point me to a suitable URL with info, or explain shortly)? I do have a hint or two, but since things are pretty screwed *p as they are right now I'm not in mood for me making mistakes...

The SMF version I use shows in my footer.

Permissions again i assume, read back on your previous posts about a year ago, and you had the same issues then.

Manuall install of TP is the way and i thiink ONLY way to sort your install of TP.

Just follow the instructions

1. extract the package on your local PC
2. Upload them and overwrite the files on your server through FTP
3. I know you use the utf8 language strings on your forum so you have to download, extract and upload that to manually to your Forum/Themes/Default/Languages folder.
4. Make the code edits to the SMF files according to the modisnstructions from our doc section.
5. Point your browser to the manual_tp_install.php

OK, thanks a lot G6 :).

I'll try to follow your advice, except the utf8 part since that doesn't apply at all. I know we were concerned in a discussion about that a long time ago, but that doesn't mean that reflects what my installation is like... And besides, I have not less than  five different official TP/SMF forums up by now, so my queries may concern either one of them ;). (Just a margin note, but I'd like you to know for future correspondence.)

Hahaha, thats great to hear, i really thought you had uft8 as you said, there were a lot of discussions about that back then  :D

OK, here I go with yet another question...

Much obliged for the manual install instruction G6, no matter what ! I've done step 1, 2 and 5 two or even three times before I troubled you, and then I tried to use Package Mgr to make the install but didn't succeed. That is why I'd like more specific instructions in the first place, just to be sure I hadn't misunderstood anything or simply missed a litte bit of information and/or action.

So, now I have restarted the procedure, following your instructions word-by-word ;), and have noticed the most crucial part of it all: Step 4. Therefore I'd like to verify with you, just to be 1000% sure, that it is this mod instruction (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=23127.0) you're implying at? I know it may sound/look annoying, me asking simple questions, but as I mentioned before: I cannot afford mistakes, complicated ones nor simple ones, right now.

Thanks,

Yes, thats the modinstructions if you install TP V1.0.5 ( new tp )
And also yes on the 4, that is the part that actually will call for tp and make it show up :)

Ok, thanks! I just went ahead while you were gone, so now I'm about half the way in the recoding (puh!)  :).

Btw, I've found some errors in the mod instructions... Where do you collect feedback for them?
Title: Re: TP105: Box and theme trouble!

I can take them here, but errors ? that modinstruction is a copy of the one in the tp package, but post them here and i will take a look at it :)

OK, I'll come back later with the mod instruction feedback. But I can say that e.g. some bbc codes seem to have been sneaking into the quoted strings....

Yes saw that when i checked the files, the quote didnt render correclty so i change it to code to, so it should be good to go, just installed a test site with the instructions and it worked without a glitch so it must be ok now though  :)

Ouch...!  :buck2:

Have recoded the lot and put it up there on the webhost via ftp, then following Step 5 by running manual_tp_install.php...

BUT,the upshrink/extension thing is still there... :tickedoff:. And YES: I use the default theme, English language and I do have cleared the browsers temp files...

Dahhh, I'll better call it a day and enter the jogging paths instead... Need to run off some frustration over here...  :uglystupid2:

FYI: The errors I found in the mod instructions where these (http://public2.racingmates.se/0_Diverse/ModinstructionTP105Errors.pdf) (sorry, they are in Swedish... for G6's eyes only, that is ;))!

Yet another day has breaked :)...

So, what to do next? I've pretty much returned to "square 1", so to speak...  :-\

You DO have the default SMF core theme as your forum default and SMF 1.1.4 ?
Title: Re: TP105: Box and theme trouble!
Post by: misjka on April 13, 2008, 11:40:28 AM
Actually, it's the TP 0.x version of the Core theme (the one I had before upgrading to 1.x, that is)... Should I use the SMF Core instead?
Title: Re: TP105: Box and theme trouble!
Post by: G6Cad on April 13, 2008, 02:36:41 PM
Offcourse, ALWAYS ONLY CORE theme when you install things to your forum, everything have to work in that theme first as the entire platfrom are based on Core theme as default.

OK...  I didn't find it totally clear in the updating news from Bloc (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=23026.0).

SO, that is the bottom line then: Remove all the TP themes and upload fresh SMF default theme, to be sure to get the TP1 to work? If that's the case, maybe the updating news should emphasize on that somewhat more?

Thanks, G6, I'll have a go on this issue later tonight :)!

QuoteOK...  I didn't find it totally clear in the updating news from Bloc.

Should be a known common sens by now that all mods install to Default Core only, we have it written everywhere and also, SMF has the same written all over.

And just to make it 100% bullitproof, your using SMF 1.1.4 right ? and not SMF2 as nothing from this site will work with SMF2 at all.

Hehe, easy for you to say who literally live here  :D... I visit here as seldom as possible, on the other hand, busy in getting my forums productive ;)!

Yep, it's 1.1.4 I'm using... just as my footer says ;).

Live is a big word hahaha,  but the basic guidelines of both this site and most of all SMF has it in several places.

Now you know though, and hopefully you will get your forum and portal up now   :D

OK, thought I would just leave a note about what happened next...

I uninstalled TP, downloaded a fresh SMF default theme and uploaded it to the webhost after I had wiped out the default theme folder on the host, and finally installed TP105 once again... But the stubbornly upshrink/expand behaviour remained  :tickedoff:...

So I made up my mind to revert the TP installation by restoring a backup I made last Friday, so now I'm happily back to 098 again  ;D... And I think I'll remain so for a while, since I simply don't have the time to waste on upgrading troubles right now. And frankly, and that is NOT a critique in any persons direction at all (since I know everyone here does their best to make it all work): As far as I could see, there weren't many new features... For sure the "infrastructure" of TP seemed to be developed further, and I guess quite a few "bugs" were corrected, but real features I think were pretty few. E.g. I was kind of disappointed that I couldn't find a Link Manager  :'(...

So, I'll return to this thread some time in the future as I feel the time is right for an upgrade. Til then, I'll do with the 098 :).

I guess is that you really didnt look, there are a ton of new features in TP. mostly the article section, but yes, it's a beta and beta 1 release so expect errors.

Link, Teampage and so on will be modules that are in the works, Bloc have separated a lot of functions to a module section with separated modules. Partly to keep TP tiny but also to make the choises a lot more for how members want to use their sites and portals.

Yes, I noticed e.g. the article features (permissions etc) and the module layout (which I referenced to as "infrastructure"). What I meant, though, was that I do acknowledge that something big is happening, but it's still on its way, so to speak.

But as a site admin I don't consider the upgrade from 098 as worthwhile. Not yet, that is. But if some more modules will be included in the official release, that might come a change of mind :).
