Title: Should I use TP ?
Post by: glennk on March 20, 2008, 02:01:33 PM
I am starting anew project which will be a website all about my home town. I want to make an improvement on the sites that already exist about my town. I would like to have clasified ads, business ads, upcoming events, info on local services, leisure facilities, things to do. I would also like a gallery that people can upload to and a forum.

I was contemplating using wordpress or joomla. However I think joomla is a tad slow and bulky for what I want.

Then I remembered the existance of TP.

Is this the right place to ask for an objective opinion ? will TP serve the purpose of what I need ? how friendy is the package to SEO ?

Thanks in advance  ;D

It will likely do what you want. You'll have to add programming and modifications to get you everything you want, but the beauty of TP is the ease with which additional programming can be added.

There's an SMF gallery that you can use and a whole lot of other modifications. I would browse through the mods over at SMF, as well as the block code snippets board here to get an idea of what others have done and give you ideas about what you can do.

I'm not really sure about what SEO is, so someone else will have to answer that.

SEO: Search Engine Optimisation

You do also need to have SMF, Simple Machines Forum installed, and TP will install to SMF.

I think TP is the best route, simply because of it's co-existance with SMF. TP is not an integration. So if later on you wanted to remove it, you could without messing up your SMF forum.

TP is an extension of SMF, you can't get any better than that.

The only downside is it's lack of modules. Like a gallery module or arcade module. However, there are modifications for SMF that add in a gallery module and an arcade module. So a user wouldn't know the difference.

Also keep in mind, there will be only 1 interface. The SMF interface. Unlike joomla and wordpress where you'll be switching between 2 interfaces...

Another bonus to keep in mind is that TP 1.0 is almost ready. Major, major, major upgrade from the existing beta, .98

As ZTN says, TP is an extension of SMF, so it's SEO will be as good as SMF.

Once TP is installed, you cannot tell it's different sooftwares, because it's not. It's a modification that is installed through the SMF package manager.
