Title: shoutbox links
Post by: lakelady on January 29, 2008, 06:51:52 AM
I'm using SMF 1.1.2 and TP 0.9.7 with the TP shoutbox on the left

when someone types a link into the shoutbox it overrunns the shoutbox and messes up the whole page in some browsers. I'd like links to show up as "< link >" (no spaces and no quotes) to remove this problem. I've searched this forum and haven't found an answer. Any tips on how to fix/change this.

thanks

Im sorry to say this, but we do not support TP V097 anylonger, a numerous things were fixed for TP V098 so the only suggestion i can give you is to upgrade tp TP V098.
And also at the same time, upgrade your SMF as there were a lot of bug and security fixes between the versions there to.

thanks G6 I've been meaning to do this but never quite got around to it. What's the best way to go about upgrading without losing important data. I saw your "how to" about using the same version of SMF, but don't see anything about upgrade procedures.

thanks again

Upgrade procedures are something you should read about at SMF. As SMF is the software you run TinyPortal on. Always upgrade your forum and then install mods afterwards.

And you will not loose any data you have, it's just files you replace with new ones and the db just gets updated, the info in the DB will always be there.
However, a backup of everything is always good to have before you change anything.

ok I'm fully updated with both SMF and TP. Using the TP Shoutbox

and I'd still like to know how to get links in the shoutbox to apear as something like "< link >" (no spaces and no quotes)

is this possible? or do I need to use a different kind of shoutbox?

you could put the shout box in a center block, and teach your users how to make their links look like this:

[ u r l = http://www.mysite.com/neatlookinglink]"go here"[ / u r l ]

minus the spaces in the url..
that way what ever they wish to type will show up with hopefully a few words instead of a long link  ;)

yes I could but I have users that are not very technical and teaching them this would be a waste of our time. And I do not want my shoutbox in the center for a variety of reasons. But, uh, thanks for the suggestion.

The shoutbox uses the doBBC function from SMF. Changing this would require a modification that would change all the links in the forum. Not something I think you should do, but if you really want it I would ask at SMF how to do it.

I've seen other shoutboxes do this. Does anyone know what ones have this feature built in?

Could you post links to the shoutbox locations that you've seen that have this function lakelady?

The answer that IchBinâ,,¢ gave you is likely to be the best you could hope for here because if any of us would know most likely he would be the one.  :)

I don't think any of them use TP so maybe it won't help. But thanks for trying

You are right, none of them use TP and only one has SMF installed.

perhaps if you could get the snippet or mod/plugin that they are using, perhaps then someone would be glad to help out  :coolsmiley:
