Title: Just started using TP and having problems setting my frontpage up properly.
Post by: johnzee on January 14, 2008, 02:52:49 PM
Ok, so I have my SMF forum up and theme selected and it all works dandy.

I am currently trying to set up my front page so that it shows a news block in the center, and possibly a couple of links to articles on the left in another small block.

For the life of me I just can't get it all working together.

Currently when I activate any blocks etc, the forums are not accessible at all. From anywhere but logging into the admin panel.

Right now I have managed to get an article on the front page - you guys can view it here if you want.

vigilanceguild.net

Ideally what I want is someone to help me out getting a front page that includes a left side block that has some links to articles, a left block that has some links and a center block that has a news feed taken from my news forum (which I havent been able to figure out either).

If anyone can help me out with this, I would be much appreciative. I've tried just about as much as I can.

Thanks!

For starters.. you don't have a TP compatible theme.

Read the sticky topics in the Support board  :)

I took down my theme pack once already to try that out as I figured it wasnt TP compatible but that still made no difference.

Ok - I took down the theme i was using and went to default. That seems to fix the problem about the forums being inaccessible to users. Thanks for that.

Im still a bit curious about the front page and block problem I was having through.

Was having? So you're not having that problem anymore on the default theme?

Update - resetting to default theme has helped with my front page and being able to access the forums. Im not sure why it didnt affect anything earlier, but i may just have been tired.

What I am currently stuck on is this:

I am trying to set up my front / home page. As you can see now I have implimented a user box on the left side, and an article box in the center. For some reason the article box is giving the error of:

"The article isn't active, hasn't been approved yet, or simply does not exist."

Though the article does indeed exist and was showing there not long ago.

Essentially I would like to have another left block showing links to articles (is this possible) and a center block that is a news window that displays posts posted from the news section of the forums. (is this possible)

Sorry for all the newbish questions but its early.

If you are still using the default articles and  categories that come with TP, please delete them and create new ones as there are some permission problems with them from the install. Everything is possible :)

Ok so I have managed to get my article up as a news block sort of in the center block area.

Is there any way I can create a block on the left that has links to individual articles and displays them in the center block when the link is clicked?

Oh and how would I go about getting rid of that error box underneath my article? I can't figure that out.

What error under your article are you talking about? Did I miss something?

You can add a catlist type of block. Or you could even custom code your own menu with an HTML/Script or phpbox type of block. You really need to dive in and see what this portal can do for you. Having us answer your every little question as you go is not the type of support we can do here. Don't take the wrong way, I want to help you. But I want you to help yourself first. Then if you get absolutely stuck, come here and we'll keep on going.

Don't get me wrong. I dont want to be hand held through things, just a bit of guidance as to what types of blocks I can use for my needs.

Currently I am going around the news feed in a rediculous manner to get news on the front page. I am making articles and adding a center block for each articles as news comes and needs to be updated. Im certain there has to be a way to have posts in a specific forums be flagged as news and be visible in a center block on the front page, but ive yet to figure it out.

And as far as that error Im talking about, underneath both my articles I see an error box containing the text :

"The article isn't active, hasn't been approved yet, or simply does not exist."

Unsure why its there or whats causing it

Did you do what I had suggested and remove the article and categories that came as default? That means delete them, do not edit them. There is probably 20 different ways to put the news on your frontpage. Just do what is best and easiest for you.
