Title: Manageable drama (now),
Post by: antechinus on January 04, 2008, 08:35:43 AM
Ok, this is weird. I uploaded a second copy of Helios to play with a different variation on the colour scheme. There was already one copy running along with six other themes. All were running flawlessly, with TP installed and functioning on all of them.
So I save a minor edit on the second copy and the forum goes nuts.
No admin button on the button bar and the button bar displaying above the user info/banner box!
WTF?
So I get back into admin by using the browser bar (action=admin) and select SMF Core. TP is still showing as installed according to the package manager but no TP functions are working on any themes and there's masses of error messages being generated.
What the hell is going on here? A minor style edit on an separate copy of a theme crashes the whole joint?

Oh and one other thing. The 1.1.4 update package that's installed has this title:

   SMF 1.0.12 / 1.1.4 / 2.0 b1.1 Update

Umm, that last bit doesn't mean SMF2.0 Beta does it? Because if it does how on earth did that get there? I'm not a charter member and I downloaded the package straight from the SMF site.

Btw, both copies of Helios are now deleted. Just as a precaution. Forum is currently in maintenance mode running the SMF Core theme.

I'm sure I mentioned Test site to you recently  ::)

Yeah you did. We also admitted that everyone does minor edits to their themes on live sites, even if they aren't supposed to. The question remains: what on earth caused this? It's usually quite ok to make minor edits on a theme that nobody is using in any case.

Btw, with both copies of Helios gone things are now back to normal. TP is working again on all themes. Error messages no problem. I'd still like to know what's going on though.

What caused it? You did.
Whats going on? I have no idea.
Whats with the SMF beta 2.0? Thats something you need to ask them..

I really do suggest you set up a test site on a subdomain.. things can and do go wrong.
Remember that some themes do rely on the default core theme for some elements.

Without knowing exactly what you did, I'm as in the dark as you are. I'm not the one playing with your site.
I have killed my site before.

Also.. when uploading or editing.. Make sure your disk quota with your host hasn't been exceeded. When that happens, nothing will save and files end up corrupted or empty after edits.

1/ Who? Me?  :o Never.

2/ Ok. I was just wondering if this sort of thing had happened before.
I sure don't want it happening again.

3/ So it is 2.0 Beta? Hell. I'll be asking them alright. That's weird.

4/ Yes boss. Setting up test forum now boss.

5/ I can tell you precisely what I did if you really want to know.

6/ Ok. I'll check that, but we've just gone to a more powerful server with heaps of grunt. Shouldn't be a problem, should it?

1. Wrong theme version on the test Helios = no forum button and no TP at all
2. When you made the edits, did you do so in the template files or the site and content files

3. SMF is SMF TP is TP

1/ Nope. Helios TP download straight from here. Yes, definitely the TP version.
I may be silly but I'm not quite that silly.  ;)

2/ It was index.template.php  What I did was remove the code stretch for displaying time logged on in the header box. I've done the same thing before without any problems.

3/ Yep. Fair enough. I'm not on your case about the apparent presence of 2.0 Beta. I'll take that up with them. I came here initially because the Package Manager was showing TP still installed but the TP functions had crashed.

PS. Just to get this straight; is it confirmed that the package is titled as a 2.0 Beta package?

In regard to 1/ above; it wasn't the forum button that disappeared. Home and Forum were still there. Admin was the one that vanished.  :)

There's another odd thing which is definitely TP related. In our side panel we have (from the top) a search window, shoutbox, theme changer, articles, permissions.
Our global mods only see the theme changer and articles. The other three aren't visible to them. They're visible if they sign in on a normal member account though (yes, we checked this).

Any tips on this one?

Instead of reposting every thing etch time you find some thing out, please EDIT your last post if no one have replied to your last post.

Even if a theme is downloaded from this site, it doesent mean it's a TP enabled theme as many themes have both the SMF only and then SMF tp version.

And i think you have to use the search a bit and try and find some answers your self, the one with that only a sertain group can see the blocks are posted several times and permissions should be a known fact to start looking in to ;)

You didnt say from the start that it was the ADMIN missing from your setup, you clearly said it was the forum, you edit that away later on from what i can see in your first post.
Thats why we have great posting guides you can follow to give the info we need in the FIRT post and not 3 pages down the row.

Your own edits to themes (from this site) have support to a limit, if you decide to change themes and what they do or look like, we expect you to do some investigation of your own on this site.
Statments like "WTF" is nothing we like here eather, even if it some times are frustrating to not get things to work the way you want them to.

So lets start over now, you post WHAT you need help with in ONE post, and we go from there, cause now you have changed your story several times so it's more or less impossible to follow up now.

Agree with G6, you did say Forum.

As for the blocks being visible.. check each blocks permissions.

Ok,will do in future.

QuoteEven if a theme is downloaded from this site, it doesent mean it's a TP enabled theme as many themes have both the SMF only and then SMF tp version.

I am aware of that, which is why I made sure that I downloaded the TP version. There are two versions of Helios listed on the download page. The TP one is the lower of the two. That is the one I downloaded and installed. No offence but I already stated that clearly.

QuoteAnd i think you have to use the search a bit and try and find some answers your self, the one with that only a sertain group can see the blocks are posted several times and permissions should be a known fact to start looking in to ;)

I have checked them and can't see anything wrong with them, but I'll go through them again just to be certain.

QuoteYou didnt say from the start that it was the ADMIN missing from your setup, you clearly said it was the forum, you edit that away later on from what i can see in your first post.

No. I'm sorry but you're wrong. The only thing I edited in my OP was the title. Nothing else was altered.

QuoteThats why we have great posting guides you can follow to give the info we need in the FIRT post and not 3 pages down the row.

Ok, in future I'll edit posts that haven't been replied to yet instead of making a separate post. I didn't think of everything at first.

QuoteYour own edits to themes (from this site) have support to a limit, if you decide to change themes and what they do or look like, we expect you to do some investigation of your own on this site.

Fine. I do try to do that but was a tad "surprised" at the time.

QuoteStatments like "WTF" is nothing we like here eather, even if it some times are frustrating to not get things to work the way you want them to.

I didn't think the acronym would be a problem since it wasn't spelled out and wasn't an attack on any person, but if you don't like it I wont use it. No problem.

QuoteSo lets start over now, you post WHAT you need help with in ONE post, and we go from there, cause now you have changed your story several times so it's more or less impossible to follow up now.

Ok. I'll put it in this post.

1/ Is it permissible to run two copies of the same theme on a forum with TP?

2/ If the answer to that question is "no" then that explains why I had a problem.
If the answer is "yes" then I'm still confused.

3/ Assuming that it is ok to run two copies I'd like to know if there's any precedent for a minor index.template.php edit in one copy causing both copies to malfunction, resulting in masses of error messages and the loss of TP functions on all the other themes as well.

Well, unless I see things as G6 did.. I'm sure you said forum..
Yes you can run 2 copies of the same theme, they are in 2 different folders.
It might help you to identify which is which by giving it a new title.

Example:
http://labradio.co.uk/index.php

http://labradio.co.uk/index.php?page=gallery

One is standard width.. the other is wide for our Galley and Reviews boards. they are almost identicle in that links in the index.template.php have been duplicated.

The second theme is retitled Invazion Gallery

What I said was "the forum went nuts", meaning the forum (as an entity, not the forum button itself) started malfunctioning. Then I said the admin button had disappeared from the button bar (as part of the malfunction). It's not particularly important at this stage anyway.

Ok, if it's cool to run two copies then that leads to question 3/ in my post.
Any tips on that?

3) The theme will likely have it's own index.template.php file, as most themes do.. if not all.
Editing one will only cause problems in that one theme.. assuming you did it wrong.

Delete the index.template.php file from the theme folder. The forum will now use the Default Core theme index.template.php file.

Ok, that's what I would have expected. So given that not only both copies of Helios but every other theme on the site as well were affected it seems I have a mystery still.

And yes, those files have been deleted because I deleted both copies of Helios when things became "amusing". I have since installed a fresh copy which is running smoothly.
Title: Re: Manageable drama (now),
Post by: Zetan on January 04, 2008, 12:41:20 PM
Unless you edited the default template.. there is no reason that those problems should affect any other theme.
Title: Re: Manageable drama (now),
Post by: antechinus on January 04, 2008, 12:49:14 PM
I couldn't alter the default Core template because it's locked in the admin centre. I wasn't extracting any files by FTP. It was live editing via the windows in admin. The only edit was to one small stretch of code in the indx.template.php file of one copy of Helios.

Result; stuff hitting fan and flying all over the place. Interesting, no?

Anyway, at the moment things are back to normal on the fresh installation.
I can't mark the OP solved but there's no immediate problem that I can see.

you can mark solved. Edit Post > Change the Message Icon in the first post under Subject to Solved  ;)

That wasn't what I meant.  :P  I'm leaving it unmarked.
As soon as I get the test forum running I'll set up an exact mirror and see if I can recreate the problem.

In fact I'm going for two test sites. That way if I kill one or the public forum crashes I still have backups.
