Is there some good documentation or a tutorial somewhere for learning to make a MOD for SMF/TinyPortal?

Like a sort of step-by-step thing...

You'll find lots of good info for making mods at SMF.

Is there much to do differently to integrate with TinyPortal?

Is there specific stuff to do to make a MOD work "better" with Tiny Portal?

Or is it just a pretty much standard SMF MOD works for TinyPortal just fine?

Depends, If you want to make a Module for tinyportal You have to make it different than default SMF one. It totally depends on what you need as there are many things.
