Alright, as I had promised, the domain name and SMF is installed.
The location is: http://testsmf.writingcenter3.teamhost.us
Busy (slowly) with setting up the test plans with the modules.
If anyone has his/or her own list of modules, let me know in that forum
Everyone can register with a phony name and instant registration.
After every major change or installation, a detailed report of version compare, error check and tests
What exactly are you trying to prove/disprove?
I (and some others) have the problem that certain text disappears 'suddenly' for admin-users.
Nobody can tell (until now) what exactly causes this problem, neither when.
I think we agree that a mod (might) be responsible for this. I want to know what mod and what it exactly does to cause this problem.
To be more specific about the problem:
For the admin of the site, (some) text in the admin panel disappears in FireFox
For the admin working with IE5/6/7, certain images are located in the English-utf8 directory of the default theme, which are not; the system language is English in my 11 boards
Certain mods (like Bookmarks) are not visible in the board
If the admin in <Admin-Server Settings-Default Forum Language> changes the default language from (English to) English and clicks on Save, the problem disappears.
When the admin closes the browser, opens a new one and browse to the site with the SMF, the problem appears
I have a list of mods, which I am going to install. Before that, I come up with the test plan which mod I am going to install first, etc. After every mod I am going to test the installation and see if I can come to the moment that I have the problem. If I have the problem mod, I see what it has changed and hope I come with a solution.
Wim
Well, the topic I started had been established long before I wrote it.
When I first joined the team here, the question was being asked on a nearly daily basis.
Now, this is with a perfectly fresh install with no other mods.. I know this because I've done it when installing SMF via Fantastico.
I'm all for finding out why this happens, but.. we have established that part is because of the Language Characters.
What isn't established is the mod which caused me a similar error, but removed the complete box including the links. If I remember correctly, it was around the same time as when the SMF Shoutbox mod went wrong. Upgrading TP resolved that problem.
My error is probably completely unrelated to what it is you are trying to find out..
Thank you. You truly gave a big pointer, that damned shoutbox.
Anyhow, I continue with the installations step for step.
1. I know what the problem is
2. I know how to get the problem
3. I don't know when it happens and by what. But we will find out.
I am at the moment busy with installing the Custom Board Sort, version 1.0.1. Everything goes alright at the moment ;D ;D
I'm cool with that.. what I would like to see is why the character settings only affect TP when first installed.
Any errors cause by a broken mod are that, errors, fix whats broken...
I do also see a few other posts which say that they haven't had a fix using the guide.. without reading all the posts again, I can't be sure if they were all new installs, or the result of an error.
It seems to me that their are 2 or more entirely different things being discussed, resulting in "similar looking" problems. This topic kind of conflicts with the topic already sticked, no matter. Lets see where you go with it.
Here is my list of mods to install:
Quote
01 - SMF is installed - change the default language to English
02 - Custom Board Sort, version 1.0.1 installed
03 - Global Headers Footers, version 1.3
04 - Global Announcements, version 1.0
05 - Custom Profile Field Mod, version 3.16
06 - Enhanced Forum Statistics, version 1.0
07 - Topic description, version 1.1
08 - Topics Filter, version 1.0
99 - Board Notes, version 1.0.7
99 - Related Topics, version 1.2.0
99 - Social Bookmarks, version 1.0
99 - Tagging System, version 1.0.4
99 - TinyPortal, version 0.983
When someone has something to add, please reply here.
The mods with the numbers 1...8 are the mods, which are now already installed with no problems until now.
The mods with the number 99 are pending and will be installed.
I personally want to wait with the TP until the end of the list.
The work is boring and I am now (at last) getting sleep. I try to sleep and continue tomorrow and hope that anyone added/suggest his or her mod to the list.
We do suggest that TP is the first mod to install.. but that defeats the object huh?
Well, I installed the TP as well.
Here is the list so far (the order of installation is its index number):

10 - Social Bookmarks, version 1.0
11 - Related Topics, version 1.2.0

12 - Board Notes, version 1.0.7
13 - Tagging System, version 1.0.4
14 - Karma Description Mod (ver. 2.3)
The frustrating thing is that there is no problem at all, while I have installed some months ago sites with the same content of mods, which went wrong (still are).
What do you think, shall I install themes?
Wim
No, I don't.
Look, this isn't how it happens.
Variables to consider:
- Host/Server?
- SMF Install Method?
- cPanel/Fantastico?
- TP Install Method?
- PHP Version?
- MySQL Version?
- Package Version?
- Language version?
- Package Error?
- Error Logs?
I'm sure theres other variables, simply installing everything in an attempt to recreate a problem isn't going to solve it.
What might solve it is to list all the possible variables in a poll and let People Feedback narrow it down.
I understand what you are trying to do.
I don't think so.
TP Install Method? What are you talking about? I see that you didn't even take the effort to look more carefully. All those details are reported in the install logs of every mod installed, including the SMF - to the last detail.
I have installed many installations of SMF that way and after a while this happened.
The thing I am confused about in this instance is that the problem does not happen when I installed it.
I will take the install logs from one of my medium servers and install the same in the weekend.
It might have something to do with TP or not, we will see. One thing, no problems with the other servers without TP!
If needed, I will set ten people on this problem and solve it the statistical way. Money and time is not the issue, it is the intent and when that happens in this way, the results stays with me.
You mentioned Host/Server, PHP version, MySQL and language versions, all of that info is on the test site.
That will of course not have any impact, because it is the newest server with the newest versions of anything. I suggest to think before you write an useless reply.
A poll to users who must give their feedback will not solve anything then waste their and your time.
If you really want to solve the issue and not some worthless expressions or other nonsense, then you can better help me with the thing. It is the only way to get to the bottom of it. Otherwise it might be better to bring to problem to Simple Machines, don't you think?
wimvincken, before you continue insulting a team member here you might want to think twice. He offered his "opinion", that doesn't mean its useless nor does it mean that he didn't think it through. You will be lucky to receive any response, or not get banned with an attitude like that. I suggest you chill out, and just take the responses that you get with a grain of salt.
Well, to cap this off.
It seems I wasn't listening?
To me it seems all of my points were ignored, and at any time another member, Team or otherwise could have voiced an opinion, nobody did.
My bullet points were to highlight differences in server settings between other hosts.
My server, php version, MySQL version may well be different to yours.
There are differences in the way SMF/TP can be installed, as discussed many times, from installation via Fantastico, to a manual TP install.
So, what common points can be highlighted between the setup I have, and the setup you have?
This topic from the very start had nothing to do with the Character settings.. So why title it as such?
The topic is/was to determine a "Similar Looking" problem.
