Title: Installing TP cannot find clear step-by-step instruction on how to get it work
Post by: Romuba on November 01, 2007, 07:43:17 AM
I do not want to hijack this thread but I want to use TinyPortal v0.9.8 (or think I do - I want to have a description on how to use the forum on my SMF Forum Home Page) but cannot find clear step-by-step instruction on how to get it working. All the info I have found on this forum as well as on SMF and this thread for that matter assumes I know the terms and procedures.

I have downloaded TinyPortal v0.9.8 to my computer. What do I do next? It is a zipped file. Do I need to unzip it, etc.  This thread speaks about Package Manager. I assume that is the one in SMF. I went to that and it is just more confusing. I then read the online manual info but am not much wiser. What is a package? Is it the entire zipped file or some part of it. When I upload it to SMF what do I need to upload - zipped file or somehting else?

I feel rather at my wits end at the moment. Once I have the answers it will probably all seem pretty easy but at the moment I am feeling like I am in a thick fog.

I have dug around and fiddled myself and eventually found the answers to my questions. I was evpecting one theng and eventually found something else. These mods are very useful and also user friendly - once I took the time to get my mind around them.

Thanks for taking the time Romuba!

Like anything else there is a learning curve to SMF/TP, but with a little effort and some trial and error it will start to come together for you.

The main thing that someone needs is the wiliness to put in a little time and effort to gain some understanding.
Thanks for doing that Romuba.  :)

I have downloaded some of the Themes and see that some have a TP in the title and a message encourages one to use those. What is the difference?

Themes must be compatible with TinyPortal  if they are to be used with SMF/TP.

Many come in two versions... for SMF, or for SMF/TP.
Some are designed to be used with both SMF or SMF/TP and with those you must go to Admin>Current Theme and turn on support for TinyPortal if you have it installed.

Ken, I have dug through all the stuff there, at Admin Current Themes but can't find anything like TinyPortal support.

I have loaded Tiny Portal and it is working but wheneve I load one of the themes from here it does not work properly. The result is what a CSS styled website looks like when the CSS file is not loaded.

What theme are you trying to install?

And a link to the site would be good... I take it that the one in your profile is not the one we are working on?

I have installed; helios_multi11final_tp, epsilon11final_tp, manuscript11final_tp, matrixfont[1] and WindowsXPr2_rc1. They all install ok but when I apply them things go wrong.

The one in my profile is indeed the one I am working on - as a test bed. You can get to the forum via http://www.bartwebsites.com/forum/index.php

Are the files actually there? In the Themes directory, do you have a folder for each theme, and the template files/images in those folders?

What I did was the following:

Under Manage and Install I scrolled down and under Install and New Theme I browsed for the them I had downloaded to my computer, selected it and clicked on Upload button. I was then told that the theme had been successfully installed. If I now click on the Overall forum default button I get a dropdown list with all the themes I added as will as the three that install automatically when SMF is installed.

I have just checked on the server, and see that the theme folder is there but no files in it. Can I just unzip the file and upload the contents to the folder with that name on the server?

It should work  yes.

Im always installing my themes manually, if the server have permission issues with the package manager, it will have the same with the themes and layou manager to.

I have now sent a support ticket to my hosting company asking why the permissions cannot be changed to allow me to write to these directories. I am in South Africa and they are in the USA which means they are about 7 hours behind me time-wise. I will have to wait a while before I can expect an answer.
