Title: Suggestion: Forum Navigation in Sidebar
Post by: likeatim on January 06, 2006, 10:48:48 AM
Hello,

I'm new here, I hope I'm in the right forum.
I have a suggestion for the Tiny-Portal: It would be very convenient to include a Forum Navigation Block in the Sidebar. Meaning, the categories and the individual forums are shown according to permissions as a little table to the right.
I can't explain it better. I've done that for a phpBB-Portal, just go to www.efb.nu and look at "ÃÆ'Ã...“bersicht" on the left. From there you can quickly access all forums and categories right there from the portal... I wouldn't know how to do it with Tinyportal / SMF, hence my suggestion.
Anyone agree? ;)

Kind regards,

likeatim

It does seem viable..although that list is of course also there in the "normal" forum index. But collecting just the forums/categories names/links (according to permissions of course) is much lighter on resources than bringing all the info normally associated with boardindex(forum index) in SMF.

that was exactly what I meant, no other information (like post count etc.) than the names and the respective links are needed in that navigation box. I hope I'm saying this right but I think it would be pretty easy to program for you (as you know the code of TinyPortal and pretty much also of SMF, I guess).

Actually, this would not be all that hard to do. The information is already pulled by the forums for BoardIndex.template.php and all that would be needed is to set up a block of code that runs through the foreach loop and writes the display.

Formatting the display, that would be the tricky part.....

I have to head on into work very shortly, but I can try and see if I can come up with a simple code snippet for this when I get home (before Stargate and the other new sci-fi channel episodes come on).

Anyways, if I can get you a code snippet, then you could just pop it into a phpblock, and worry about the final formatting yourself. :)

I will see what I can come up with...

(Note: I have almost no knowledge of php programming, but doing things like this, tweaking code, and doing little snippets helps me learn - so, yes, I do have an ulterior motive here)

Okay, have to leave for work now. However, here is an update:

I have gotten it so that I can make a list, but it does not show up all the time, so I have to figure that out (likely I will have to make a function call of some sort), but I currently have it outputing in nested unordered lists, but I may change that to just a few non-breaking spaces and a symbol of some sort.

Anyways, I am making progress on it. :)

As I'm totally code challenged (haven't a clue!)

If your categories/boards aren't changed that often why not just use Menu Manager?

Mostly because I want the permissions for the boards in the forum navigation (hidden boards should be visible to the mods but not to the user).
And this is just the technically "sound" solution for it ;)

I'll second that, I had a link to the download manager in mine and when a guest clicked it it created a few error messages.

Update - it seems that $context only holds the category information when you are on the BoardIndex.template.php page. I think that I am going to have to learn how to write me a function to handle this.

A lot more work than I had thought, but I think it would be something neat, and if I can get it figured out, maybe bloc would consider adding it as a future feature. :)

BOOYAH!!!!! I actually did it! (yes, I surprised myself!!  :2funny: )

I now have the code that allows you to display the categories, forums and child forums in a phpbox. It also uses the forum permissions to determine what gets displayed.

Ok, there are several different things that you will have to add to various files to get this to work. Also, this code is ugly, and if somebody who knows how to program php better than I do (which is likely to be anybody who knows how to program in php) wants to give a hand to help clean it up, I know that I would be very appreciative.

Okay, I will explain what I did and give you the different bits to add as we go along.

First off, I discovered (through lots of trial and error and a large number of var_dumps() into a phpbox (and boy was that messy....  ;D) that there is a setting in the global $context that only gets loaded when you are looking at the BoardIndex.

Therefore, I cut-n-paste a large portion of that code into a new function. I put this function in load.php in the Sources directory (I put it at the bottom). This is where I could use some help/advice on how to clean up the database call. Rather than mess with stuff I know nothing about, I left the DB call as it was, so it pulls a lot of extra information, but that is okay since we do not actually use most of it, and once we set this information, the function won't make the DB call a second time (I cribbed this from another function - hehe).

Okay, so you will want to copy the following and post it into the bottom of Load.php before the closing ?> tag.

function loadBoardList()
{
global $txt, $scripturl, $db_prefix, $ID_MEMBER, $user_info, $sourcedir;
global $modSettings, $context, $settings;

if (isset($context['menuList']))
return;

// Find all boards and categories, as well as related information.  This will be sorted by the natural order of boards and categories, which we control.
$result_boards = db_query("
SELECT
c.name AS catName, c.ID_CAT, b.ID_BOARD, b.name AS boardName, b.description,
b.numPosts, b.numTopics, b.ID_PARENT, IFNULL(m.posterTime, 0) AS posterTime,
IFNULL(mem.memberName, m.posterName) AS posterName, m.subject, m.ID_TOPIC,
IFNULL(mem.realName, m.posterName) AS realName," . (!$user_info['is_guest'] ? "
(IFNULL(lb.logTime, 0) >= b.lastUpdated) AS isRead, c.canCollapse,
IFNULL(cc.ID_MEMBER, 0) AS isCollapsed" : ' 1 AS isRead') . ",
IFNULL(mem.ID_MEMBER, 0) AS ID_MEMBER, m.ID_MSG,
IFNULL(mods_mem.ID_MEMBER, 0) AS ID_MODERATOR, mods_mem.realName AS modRealName
FROM {$db_prefix}boards AS b
LEFT JOIN {$db_prefix}categories AS c ON (c.ID_CAT = b.ID_CAT)

LEFT JOIN {$db_prefix}members AS mods_mem ON (mods_mem.ID_MEMBER = mods.ID_MEMBER)
WHERE $user_info[query_see_board]" . (empty($modSettings['countChildPosts']) ? "
AND b.childLevel <= 1" : ''), __FILE__, __LINE__);

// Run through the categories and boards....
$context['menuList'] = array();
while ($row_board = mysql_fetch_assoc($result_boards))
{
// Haven't set this category yet.
if (empty($context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']]))
{
$context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']] = array(
'id' => $row_board['ID_CAT'],
'name' => $row_board['catName'],

$context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']]['link'] = '<a name="' . $row_board['ID_CAT'] . '" href="' . (isset($row_board['canCollapse']) ? $context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']]['collapse_href'] : $context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']]['href']) . '">' . $row_board['catName'] . '</a>';
}

// Let's save some typing.  Climbing the array might be slower, anyhow.
$this_category = &$context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']]['boards'];

// This is a parent board.
if (empty($row_board['ID_PARENT']))
{

);
$this_category[$row_board['ID_BOARD']]['link_moderators'][] = '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=profile;u=' . $row_board['ID_MODERATOR'] . '" title="' . $txt[62] . '">' . $row_board['modRealName'] . '</a>';
}
}
// Found a child board.... make sure we've found its parent and the child hasn't been set already.
elseif (isset($this_category[$row_board['ID_PARENT']]['children']) && !isset($this_category[$row_board['ID_PARENT']]['children'][$row_board['ID_BOARD']]))
{
// A valid child!
$isChild = true;

$this_category[$row_board['ID_PARENT']]['children'][$row_board['ID_BOARD']] = array(
'id' => $row_board['ID_BOARD'],
'name' => $row_board['boardName'],
'description' => $row_board['description'],
'href' => $scripturl . '?board=' . $row_board['ID_BOARD'] . '.0',
'link' => '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?board=' . $row_board['ID_BOARD'] . '.0">' . $row_board['boardName'] . '</a>'
);
}

}
mysql_free_result($result_boards);
}

The next step is quite easy. You need to add the following lines to index.php in the root of the forum's directory.

Find:

// Load the current user's permissions.
loadPermissions();

And add the following beneath it:

//Create the Board Listing for use in a menu
loadBoardList();

Whew! Not so bad so far.... Now comes the fun part, actually making your menu....

Okay, in TPAdmin, you will want to add a phpbox, and in that box you will want to paste the following or a variation of it:

global $context, $settings, $options, $txt, $scripturl, $modSettings;
foreach ($context['menuList'] as $category)
{
echo '<b style="color: Maroon;">' . $category['name'] . '</b><br />';
foreach ($category['boards'] as $board)
{
echo '<img src="'.$settings['images_url'].'/divider.gif" alt="" /> <a href="'. $board['href'] . '">'. $board['name'] . '</a><br />';
// Show the "Child Boards:
foreach ($board['children'] as $child)
{
echo '<img src="'.$settings['images_url'].'/blank.gif" width="5" alt="" /> <img src="'.$settings['images_url'].'/divider.gif" alt="" /> <a href="' . $child['href'] . '">' . $child['name'] . '</a><br />';
}
}
}

This makes a simple list like the one shown in the image below. You can adjust the code in various ways to style it, put it in table cells, etc.. The important parts are the foreach loops, you don't really want to mess with them.  ;D

(https://www.tinyportal.net/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ironcrown.com%2FICEforums%2Findex.php%3Faction%3Ddlattach%3Btopic%3D506.0%3Battach%3D20%3Bimage&hash=8d47416e4e687a9423d78721dc7e018e7e40d7a3)

And yes, when I logged in under a test account, I was unable to see the Playtester forum as I had set it so that only the Admin could see it in the forum permissions.

So, there you go! Enjoy!

Great. :) Thats how one learn these things really...diving right in.

Now, 2 things..you already mentioned one, that of loading in all the "extras" but not using them, the thing is that the mysql resource will still use the memory needed, so the mysql call should really be shrinked.

The other thing..you should not really load all that on every page call, which adding it to index.php will do. Instead, try add the call in the actual block before your output code. That means getting it only when that blockcode is executed. ...Save the poor server. :)

Yeah, I know. I will be working on whittling down that SQL string for the DB call, but I want to be very careful with it as that is a complex string, much more so than any I have ever worked with before.

Well, the issue here is that for it to be a used in a block, it would end up getting called every page as well.

Also, I did put the following lines in the block:

if (isset($context['menuList']))
return;

which means that it dumps out of the function prior to doing the DB call and cuts it short once the values have been added to $context. It also just occured to me that that IF statement could be placed around the function call on the index page, so that it never calls the function at all if it is already set. Does that make any sense?

Title: Re: Suggestion: Forum Navigation in Sidebar
Post by: likeatim on January 09, 2006, 09:01:15 AM
also, maybe the sql-results could be cached? because one rarely changes the board structure many times a day, and then one could force a rewrite  of the cached forum structure....
Title: Re: Suggestion: Forum Navigation in Sidebar
Post by: Rasyr on January 09, 2006, 12:12:14 PM
They are cached, after a a fashion. $context is a global variable, and it hold all sorts of information. The above function stores its results in $context when the function is first run. At that point, the function isn't needed to be called again. (thus moving the IF statement from inside the function to being a wrapper around it. However, this means that I would need to add a line of code to the functions which post changes made to the Boards (i.e. adding/deleting a category or forum) that unsets $context('menu') and thus allows the function to be called again.

Title: Re: Suggestion: Forum Navigation in Sidebar
Post by: bloc on January 10, 2006, 01:49:15 AM
$context is a run-time variable, it will be renewed on every pageload.

If this was a dedicated blocktype, it could save the results into the blocks table, and have a setting for when it was refreshed, say once a day. At least then this would be fetched in one call along with the rest of the blocks, thus not adding any separate calls for it.

As of now it works ok..the key is to minimise the db call so much that it won't impact on peformance. Meaning less of the left joins and not used fields.
Title: Re: Suggestion: Forum Navigation in Sidebar
Post by: Rasyr on January 10, 2006, 02:06:02 AM
Okay, how is this? Through massive trial and error (I am no good at writing SQL queries - I removed everything I could that did not give me errors), I was able to whittle the function down to the following (I have absolutely no idea how to make it a dedicated blocktype either):

Remember - I have this at the end of the load.php file in the sources directory

// Create a list of Categories/Forums for a static display.
function loadBoardList()
{
global $txt, $scripturl, $db_prefix, $ID_MEMBER, $user_info, $sourcedir;
global $modSettings, $context, $settings;

if (isset($context['menuList']))
return;

// Find all boards and categories, as well as related information.  This will be sorted by the natural order of boards and categories, which we control.
$result_boards = db_query("
SELECT
c.name AS catName, c.ID_CAT, b.ID_BOARD, b.name AS boardName,
b.ID_PARENT, IFNULL(mods_mem.ID_MEMBER, 0) AS ID_MODERATOR
FROM {$db_prefix}boards AS b
LEFT JOIN {$db_prefix}categories AS c ON (c.ID_CAT = b.ID_CAT)
LEFT JOIN {$db_prefix}moderators AS mods ON (mods.ID_BOARD = b.ID_BOARD)
LEFT JOIN {$db_prefix}members AS mods_mem ON (mods_mem.ID_MEMBER = mods.ID_MEMBER)
WHERE $user_info[query_see_board]", __FILE__, __LINE__);

// Run through the categories and boards....
$context['menuList'] = array();
while ($row_board = mysql_fetch_assoc($result_boards))
{
// Haven't set this category yet.
if (empty($context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']]))
{
$context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']] = array(
'id' => $row_board['ID_CAT'],
'name' => $row_board['catName'],
'boards' => array(),
);
}

// Let's save some typing.  Climbing the array might be slower, anyhow.
$this_category = &$context['menuList'][$row_board['ID_CAT']]['boards'];

// This is a parent board.
if (empty($row_board['ID_PARENT']))
{
// Is this a new board, or just another moderator?
if (!isset($this_category[$row_board['ID_BOARD']]))
{
// Not a child.
$isChild = false;

$this_category[$row_board['ID_BOARD']] = array(
'id' => $row_board['ID_BOARD'],
'name' => $row_board['boardName'],
'children' => array(),
'link_children' => array(),
'href' => $scripturl . '?board=' . $row_board['ID_BOARD'] . '.0',
'link' => '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?board=' . $row_board['ID_BOARD'] . '.0">' . $row_board['boardName'] . '</a>'
);
}
}
// Found a child board.... make sure we've found its parent and the child hasn't been set already.
elseif (isset($this_category[$row_board['ID_PARENT']]['children']) && !isset($this_category[$row_board['ID_PARENT']]['children'][$row_board['ID_BOARD']]))
{
// A valid child!
$isChild = true;

$this_category[$row_board['ID_PARENT']]['children'][$row_board['ID_BOARD']] = array(
'id' => $row_board['ID_BOARD'],
'name' => $row_board['boardName'],
'href' => $scripturl . '?board=' . $row_board['ID_BOARD'] . '.0',
'link' => '<a href="' . $scripturl . '?board=' . $row_board['ID_BOARD'] . '.0">' . $row_board['boardName'] . '</a>'
);
}

}
mysql_free_result($result_boards);
}

Then I changed the code on the index.php (in the root forum folder) to read:

//Create the Board Listing for use in a menu
if (is_null($context['menuList']))
loadBoardList();

I did not change any of the code that I used to display the list.

Pretty good, I think. As far as I could tell there was not any difference between what I originally had and the trimmed function. (though I did forget all about checking the page load times).

Well Rasyr .. works good  :)

small changes ...
is_null (in the index.php) gives error ..
try better

//Create the Board Listing for use in a menu
if (!isset($context['menuList']))
loadBoardList();

and add the $context to global  ;)

My TP-Block:

global $context, $settings;
foreach ($context['menuList'] as $category)
{
$s = html_entity_decode($category['name']);
echo '<div class="titlebg" style="margin:0px; padding:3px 4px 2px 4px;font-weight:normal;">', (strlen($s) > 22) ? substr($s,0,21).'..' : $s , '</div>';
foreach ($category['boards'] as $board)
{
$s = html_entity_decode($board['name']);
echo '<div class="windowbg" style="font-size:x-small; padding:0px;">
<img src="'.$settings['theme_url'].'/images/TPdivider.gif" alt="" />
<a href="'. $board['href'] . '">', (strlen($s) > 25) ? substr($s, 0, 24).'..' : $s , '</a></div>';
// Show the "Child Boards:
foreach ($board['children'] as $child)
{
$s = html_entity_decode($child['name']);
echo '<div class="windowbg" style="font-size:x-small; margin:0px;">
<img src="'.$settings['theme_url'].'/images/blank.gif" width="5" alt="" />
<img src="'.$settings['theme_url'].'/images/TPdivider.gif" alt="" />
<a href="' . $child['href'] . '">', (strlen($s) > 25) ? substr($s, 0, 24).'..' : $s , '</a></div>';
}
}
}

that work with most themes ...

I said I'd have a fiddle .......

Now I want to show off  8)

I've taken it a stage further and added links for the buttons as well. These will also display according to the membergroup permissions. I left out the Login and Register buttons.

The index.php and Load.php are as posted, this is the code for the block.

        global $context, $settings, $options, $txt, $scripturl, $modSettings;

     // Show the [home] button.
       echo '

     // Show the [forum] button.

       echo '        <div class="menu"><img src="'.$settings['images_url'].'/TPdivider.gif" alt="" /><img src="'.$settings['theme_url'].'/images/blank.gif" width="2" alt="" /><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=forum">Forum</a></div>';
     // Show the [boards] .
foreach ($context['menuList'] as $category)
{
echo '<div class="menu"><img src="'.$settings['theme_url'].'/images/blank.gif" width="6" alt="" />' . $category['name'] . '</div>';
foreach ($category['boards'] as $board)

Mooncat .. other modification (Load.php, index.php) is original that, was Rasyr last posted. You need only modify the TP phpblock ..

Fel

(I have added the shrink gif's for that)

Edit later: a small bug  ::) .. replace void() with void(0) .. IE gives error *g*

Unfortunately, I've just found a problem with loadBoardList()

I have arcade 1.2.4b installed and when someone clicks the Arcade button or link it only loads the forum. If I remove the code from index.php they both work.

I'm delighted I followed all that.

Even more delighted that it works. It was the first thing I wanted when I installed TP. I was suprised it wasn't an SSI option.

I used both Feline and Rasyr's code. Thanks, all!

Am I going to have to repaste the load and index code if I upgrade?

No, you should not have to. The Custom blocks you make are stored in the database, thus, they should appear as normal after an upgrade.

sorry, that might sound stupid, but could you tell me again step-by-step where I have to input what code?
is it all happening in the admin panel or do I change php-files?

thanks
Title: Re: Suggestion: Forum Navigation in Sidebar

Basically, you take the code, create a new phpblock (in the Edit Blocks section of TPAdmin) and paste the code into the block and save it.

So long as you have the block being displayed, it will display in all themes.

Title: Re: Suggestion: Forum Navigation in Sidebar
Post by: feline on February 10, 2006, 05:50:34 PM
Right !

I have add need files ..

Forumnav.php .. is the code for the php-block
addtoLoad.php .. is the code that you must add to the end of Load.php

but last .. you must add this to index.php
search for
// Load the current user's permissions.
loadPermissions();

add after:
//Create the Board Listing for use in a menu
if (!isset($context['menuList']))
loadBoardList();

that all ...

edit later;
ahh .. my forumnav have skrinkbuttons for each board  ;)
I have the col / exp pics added.
Copy to your theme/images directory ..

Works with any TP version and smf RC1 / RC2

This is exactly why I chose SMF and TinyPortal.  Because of all of the helpful people.  It's the community that makes it.

Thank you.  Now my last question is (since I am no coding expert) that I have some long forum names and it is pushing my column wider than 150.  Is there a way to wrap the names?

Got it!  I just changed nowrap to wrap.  It's not falling in line spacing wise, but it will do.

You guys rock!

your texttype is very large, but you can change the "cutting" of strings ..

for the Categorienames change 20 repevtive 19 to smaller value

', (strlen($s) >= 20+(substr_count(substr($s,0,20),'&')*6)) ? substr($s,0,19+substr_count(substr($s,0,19),'&')*6).'..' : $s , '</div>

here a example 3 chars smaller..

', (strlen($s) >= 17+(substr_count(substr($s,0,17),'&')*6)) ? substr($s,0,16+substr_count(substr($s,0,16),'&')*6).'..' : $s , '</div>

the same procedure for the Boardnames, change 28 respective 27 to smaller value

', (strlen($s) > 28+(substr_count(substr($s,0,28),'&')*5)) ? substr($s,0,27+substr_count(substr($s,0,27),'&')*5).'..' : $s , '</div>';

Unknown column 'lb.logTime' in 'field list'
File: /home/rogue/public_html/Sources/Load.php
Line: 2222

Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum's files are currently at version SMF 1.1.7, while your database is at version 1.1.6. The above error might possibly go away if you execute the latest version of upgrade.php.

Really wanting this any help? :-\
