Title: Downloadsection critique
Post by: webfritz on July 21, 2007, 07:37:03 PM
Such a pigsty here. Confusing downloads, corrupted links.  >:( This situation keeps me off and afraid from TP. That's no platform to build on with such a mess in Downloads!

It is a beta, please have some patience. We are working towards a stable version, but we are not there yet.

Tinyportal will always have some 'rough edges' as a beta please make allowances for that.

Honestly speaking, i am not the guy to tell anybody that something pisses me off. But, I am not amused to serch the download area for hours and do not find what i am searching, because there is no serch funktion in. I wonder, because some things are really fine, but there is a huge lack of structure and sorted areas.

Anyway, for my situation i hesitate to go to TP because some things are not at it's best. But, that's life. Anywhere you will go you can get into a pigsty. But, why here?  >:( in the free download section?

Your comments and feedback are welcomed here.  I think it the way you came across that made things go affray.   The structure of things here are a work in progress.  At the moment getting TP 1.0 ( the first "stable" release) out takes priority over most other things that really are not of a high priority.   We do like to hear feedback from users here it is what has made this mod what it is.  However there is a more tactful way of doing it.  The downloads can be a bit confusing sometimes we are all aware of that.  If you look through it you will find everything pretty much is there  you just have to look.   As far as taking hours to find something I just looked through the downloads and looked at everything there in about ten minutes.   If you are looking for something in particular please post what and maybe I can help you find it.   Tick

I am with you. Anyway, as you state:
QuoteThe structure of things here are a work in progress.
I do not expect everything to be fine at a 100 %. But, your downloads are the entry to any new user and there is a decision point to stay tuned or to keep out. If I look inside, there are missing previews in and its so inhomogenous to become scared. I really wonder, because your downloads are not huge and if you keep them up to date and sorted, this is not a tremendous effort.

And, i am sure, you will get this time back more than expected. My intend is done. I say, everybody was not harshly, that is fine and as I posted I thought by myself: They really will kick me off.

You should rate it as a recommendation of a frustrating search tour inside TP Download area.

Thanks a lot for your patient responses.

Perhaps instead of just telling us your opinion you could give examples of what you think should be done. This is the feedback we are looking for. Its what helps us make a better product.

Ok. First of all, there is no search function. Only by instance in the forum i got the link to cityscape download. Why are you using a download section without search capability? For me this is completely non understandable.

Look at the downloads here in http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=cat476 (http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=cat476)
Most of the Downloads do not have a Preview.

That's the mess what I described before with this one word. Searching is - using your order - a gambling and takes time, is frustrating and affects post like this one.  :)

As Tp is in beta development this feature have not been built in yet, but there will be in some future release as it's on Blocs to do list.

There have been a privew image for all themes in the downloads, but that section is themes made by StormLRD and have been moved to his own site where he have them installd for a full view and also preview images in the downloadsection on his site.

Most members seem to find and accept that some things are not the way they suppose to be right now as TP is in development. Many posts in here say and explain the dev status of this mod, and also explain where and how to find things.
Of about 10k posts/week, i think we have one or two members asking for help finding what they are looking for in the downloads.

We ask for a little bit of patiense from our members, cause the small issues we have here with how things look and work are really small if you think of what you get from us and the developer of TinyPortal :)

Check out the ones submitted by you know who.

I agree that we certainly need a search function. But as was stated, its beta software and not everything is put in all at once. Things are worked on when they can be. And of course search is just one of many features planned.

Thanks to the team. Finally, I really can state - your team is not in a beta stadium. It's not common to have such a patient and friendly dialog about such a critical response what I gave to you.

Yes, I should keep in mind to have TP as a beta. For this beta state you are on a good way.

Have a good time and all the best!  :)

Thanks for not jabbing too hard. ;) I was tempted to get a little rough on you, but you have legitimate feedback. I just wanted you to put it in words. :D Thanks for the feedback!

Well, I am glad you are happy because I am not.

First, you seem to confuse content with function. Yes, a search function is needed - but not crucial for a download section to work. That category you refer to, is where the author chose to only use names and not images for its themes. But what does a download section basically need to offer? DOWNLOAD. Thats the main function, and thats what this does now. Not preview images, not even search is needed for that, because the hierachy in the form of categories should be enough for anyone to find what they seek.

As for Cityscape not found in downloads, that again is a simple logic to follow. I don't expect visitors to be astrophysisists..but I do expect them to at least see that Cityscape is made by Bloc-> "ah, it must be in BLOC THEMES then, in the download section". And if a link doesn't work: "oh, well, it hasn't been updated yet, I'll let them know about it so they can fix it".

Instead you throw slander around like its your right and expect me to listen to it? If anything you pissed ME off, and its only by the teams polite response I didn't go any further.

Where do you get the idea that by being rude somehow will make me listen more? That your anger magically will be enough to make things change? I don't listen to angry people, I listen to calm and reasonable people that understand that asking for stuff in something thats offered for FREE means they can't just demand it.

Yes, it*s free, Ok, i realize you*re are bothered and angry, 'cause your work is a centerpoint of TP and i am sure the coding inside is yours, and it's perfect. You are angry because for you this is a personal affront.

Anyway, we're struggling about the layout of your download area. As we have a common understanding, search is missing. Some things are beta, ok, i am aware of it.
What you (Bloc) implement that some search result will point to you as an author and the theme and download is dedicted to you, that's too much. I am german speaking, natively. And, let me say, I don't know you and I dont know your themes at the very first time.

QuoteI don't listen to angry people, I listen to calm and reasonable people that understand that asking for stuff in something thats offered for FREE means they can't just demand it.
I am calm. I'm a leader of a company of about 500 people. But I learned to say what is not ok. Any comment and any disorder is a chance to improve.

Take this chance and get it changed. That's business. That's life.

Edit: It's up to you. You're really not one of my employees. You can stay on, if you like. But ever remind: The better is one thing ahead of the good.

I have a Boss with this problem as well. He knows how to say something is not OK, but he has no tact in how he says it. Thats what Bloc is talking about. Had you requested instead of demanded in such a manner it would have been a different response from him.

"You handle 500 emploeyes" - is thats supposed to impress me or something? Sounds like something a juvenile would put out just get to get ahead in an argument rather.

No, I am "not really one of employees", not by far. And this is not a business, and can't be treated as such either. Its an open source project, where people contribute for free and don't expect anything in return. And certainly don't have to deal with puffed-up "bosses" that like to change the world. ::) "better is a step ahead of good" ..tsk, have you been reading the boards AT ALL? Seen the progress from the early days? No? I thought so.

This is getting ridiculous, I am spending time on this..too much already. Topic closed.
