Title: TP + SMF + Coppermine -> installation order?
Post by: Catalyst Group on July 12, 2007, 04:47:32 PM
Hi guys!

As i am a total rookie in this field, i would be greatful if u could answer me on a few questions... ->

I have previously installed older versions of SMF board & Coppermine gallery on my server and i need to update them... my plan is to install TP as well, to get some sort of a community portal... but i have doubts about few things...

1. What is the best installation order for above mentioned scrpts? First TP and then SMF+Coppermine or the another way around?
2. Imagine situation in which everything is installed - and i need to update SMF or Coppermine or even both with the newer versions - do i need to follow a certain procedure or is everything the same as with the "stand alone" installations?
3. Is Coppermine the best possible gallery to work with the TP? Can u recommend any other?

Tnx in advance!

Think about it for second here. What is TinyPortal and Coppermine? TP is a modification to the SMF forum. Coppermine is a stand alone script unless you use the bridge to bridge the users from SMF.

So lets say you update coppermine and TinyPortal first. Whats going to happen when you update SMF? What happens if SMF replaces files or changes code that TP or coppermine depend on? So logically, you would want to update the MAIN component in this situation first. That would be SMF. Then install TP and coppermine after. I hope you understand how this works now. :)

Ahaaaa, okay.. BUT!

Do i need to bridge coppermine with the SMF or with the TP? Because i want to have "gallery" button as a part of TP portal (for example - in the same row as home, forum, download, about, docs, etc.), and not as a part of SMF menu!

I hope u interstand what i mean?

btw. you answered the first part of the question - the installation procedure... what i need to do when i have everything installed and want to update just coppermine... or TP with the newer version?

TP is just a mod like any other mod.  THere is no way to bridge coppermine with the tp itself because tp is just a mod for smf.  So your coppermine would be bridged with your smf.   I have a forum that has tp installed on that I bridged a coppermine gallery with.  Just do it like Ich said.  Install smf ,  then Tp,  Then bridge your coppermine with the smf.  Hope this helps.

If you don't have SMF, you can't have TP, because TP is a mod for SMF.   Coppermine is a program of itself.

First, just like IchBin said, install or update SMF.   Then install TP before anyother mods to SMF.   After you do all of that, then you can add coppermine to them..

Once coppermine is installed you can add it to your menu bar in TP by going to the settings menu or blocks menu in TP.

Or, you can add coppermine as an article in TP by using an iframe.  This is what I did and you can view it by going to my site then click on photogallery.    But first, read this post here on this board.   http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=11311.0

But, if i am not mistaken, if i do so, i think that the link for the coppermine gallery will appear in the smf menu... and i don't want it there as i have said before... only TP menu bar comes in question!

...or i didn't understand something well...?

To someone who has been using TP for a while this all seems simple and it really is.  :)
But for one who is just starting off it takes a minute or two to get up to speed, it took me lots of mins!  ;)
Anyway..saying it differently may help a little:

The only button that TP automatically adds to the list of SMF buttons on the link bar is the 'forum' button... it then uses the 'home' button to access the front page that is added to your forum by TP, so you still have and use the SMF link bar & buttons after TP is installed.
In other words it's still the SMF link menu bar, not the TP menu bar and any changes that you make go through the SMF files.
In some custom themes this may be somewhat different, but that's a whole different discussion.
QuoteBecause i want to have "gallery" button as a part of TP portal (for example - in the same row as home, forum, download, about, docs, etc.), and not as a part of SMF menu!

Coppermine is a completely different install from SMF and is only linked to SMF if you use the bridge... and if you want to add a button for Coppermine you must add it to your SMF link bar which can be done whether you bridge or not.
And... you don't have to add the gallery button if you don't wish to do so, in some of the themes that are on my site there is no gallery button in the link bar, the link to the gallery is placed in a link block (box) instead.

Basically IchBinâ„¢ & Tick have already given you the answers, just reread their posts to see how it should work.

Hope this helps... Ken.

Also to clear up some misconceptions I think you are having about the coppermine software.  When you bridge the coppermine it does not add a button anywhere.  When you bridge it you are  just making it where when a user signs on with one they are automatically signed on with the other.  The coppermine is not a  mod that is made for smf but a stand alone software that can work with smf.  TP does not have its own menu bar it uses smf menu bar and just adds a button to that.  You can however create blocks that have menus in them very  easily with the tp block system.  Hope this helps.  Tick

Okay, now i understand... BUT again :D this site /tinyportal.co.uk/ is running on SMF + TP installation, right? I need exactly the same design as here - we have two menu bars: one "main" menu bar with "home", "forum", "downloads", etc. buttons, and another one with "help", "search", "profile", etc. I suppose that the first bar is from TP, a second one from SMF?

How to make the same thing on my own?

btw. my coppermine installation will be only integrated with the SMF, not bridged!

Actually the second menu bar is theme specific. All you have to do is create an additional template_menu function. If you look at the bottom of the index.template.php file you will see the template_menu() function. You can copy that menu if you'd like, then just change the links inside. Rename the function to something like function template_menu2(). Then you just echo that function where you would like to see it in your page. echo template_menu2();

Coppermine has a built in bridge to bridge to SMF. You can just install Coppermine on /gallery, and SMF on /forum, TP over SMF, then go to Coppermine admin and bridge it to SMF. :)

When bridged, it will then use the userdatabase of SMF and user registration page of SMF.

Later, manually change the theme and add a button to your theme.

Here's my site with SMF, TP and Coppermine. I have ReviewPost as well. :)

I have set up a testing folder on my server just to see how are things working... one thing i don't understand regarding diffirent themes - do i need to instal SMF theme to change the view of my portal or i need to install TP theme instead? What is the diffirence?

And what if i install (bridge) coppermine also... is this script going to work under the old "regime" or it will be influenced by the SMF or TP...  :o

When you have TP installed you then need to use themes that are designed for TP, themes that are written just for SMF will not work/display correctly after you have TP installed.

The smf-Coppermine bridge only connects the Coppermine gallery to the SMF member base... the two of them (SMF & cpg) have no other connection and do not influence each other in any way except for that members data.
