Title: Block Manipulation
Post by: myndcraft on June 21, 2007, 08:41:15 PM
I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction here. I'm going to describe first what I want and then how Im currently set up.

I would like a block on the left side that's titled "Contents".  That box should have links to articles, but for now lets just deal with one.. "How To".  When you click on How To it takes you to "How To" article. And if you look above the article you see  "My Site" > How To.

The "How To" Page is actually a table of contents really for different "How To" articles.  So if you click on "Sharpen a pencil" it will take you to the "Sharpen Pencil" article.. and above the block you should see "My Site" > How To > Sharpen a Pencil.

Okay I can make all that happen.  Here is the part I CAN'T though.  In the site tree above the block I want to click on "How To" and actually return to the "How To" table of contents article.

I have tried nearly every combination of creating categories and organizing things I can think of.  I feel this should be easy to do, but am thus far stuck.  Any help please??

Thanks in advance!

I'd be interested in the answer to this one.

I have an idea, but I don't want to mislead you.

I'm happy to try any idea you may have Alex!  My board isn't live yet so I'm not worried about breaking anything :D

Oh and btw, love your site.

:D thanks. Try creating a category, but make it a sub-category of something else.

When you create an article, link it to the subcategory instead.

See how that works for you.

Hm. I tried it myself and I think I got to work as you wanted.

As an example:
Created the Category called "How To."
Then create an article called "Sharpen Pencil."
Make sure you select article as sub-category of "How To."

...and if you want create an intro.

Do you have the "Show linktree" option checked in Options for each of your articles?

Hi SKhilled yes I do.. Actually let me clarify my scenario a bit as I did for ~Alex through PM in hopes that someone will be able to help me around this issue.

-------
Site: http://central-core.org/smf/ (http://central-core.org/smf/)

Okay so on the left under contents I have a single link to an article "Rules Addendum".. this is my table of contents (How To) as you can see its an actual article not a category.  Clicking on that takes you to the article which has the links to the other articles...

So when you click that article (a member of the Rules Addendum group) it navigates there and the site tree updates accordingly.  The problem though is clicking on the Rules Addendum in the site tree brings you back to all the articles contained within.. where i would like it to go to my "Table of Contents".

I had tried moving that article into rules addendum itself and it works better (especially if I make it the featured article), but I don't want to see the other articles (the rules themselves) beneath it which is what happens.
-------

Any thoughts?

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I will see if I can't get Bloc to look at this as I don't know why it doesn't work that way.

--edit-- actually I'm going to put it in the bug tracker instead. Let Bloc fix it if he thinks its not working like it should. :)

Thanks IchBin.  I'm wondering if you were able to test this yourself and if it did not work for you as well.  It's quite possible that I am missing one small configuration and that it should work :D

I can give you temp admin on my site if you would like so you can try it out. I don't know if you an actual "test" site that you play with.

PM let me know and thank you for feedback =)

Good to hear, because I was a little disapointed I couldn't accomplish what I was trying to.
