Lavasoft's Adaware Personal is free, I also use spybot search and destroy, free and a good program too, those two usually find different things as well, so I use them together. To prevent infection I am not using anything at all, aside from an antivirus (Nod32).

I'd say it's mostly due to corrupted files downloaded to PC -- my desktop stays full of folders & zip's -- can't even see my Beautiful wallpaper [ Eva Longoria (http://www.sexydesktop.co.uk/long.htm) ] ..but I always run a Norton scan on each one just to be sure..
Try www.snapfiles.com - under the Freeware tab, you can find a good assortment of files that can help you through most anything...
