Title: REQ - SUG - Thanks etc
Post by: threadwhisperer on May 25, 2007, 10:34:40 PM
Thanks:
First and foremost I must say I am very very impressed with TinyPortal and am enjoying getting used to it's abilities and such on my site (http://escf.rethan-manor.net). I have done some minor tweaking of various things in both SMF and TP in order to make my pages what I truly wished them to be thus far and it has been easy and quick to do. A testement to the skill of those who made both SMF and TP. Many thanx for all those folks have done.

REQ:
Next I would like to bring up something that was mentioned before and just ask if it could be done easily enough by someone with a bit more coding experience then myself. I would like to add user specific blocks to the profile pages. As in blocks that would be identified specifically to the user viewing their own profile page so that they could edit those blocks to contain their own info's such as snippets and html things like weather or online game stats etc... if possible even their own little shout box... Now when they are viewing their own profile they can manage the content of these blocks.. but when they are viewing some one else's profile they see that users blocks instead of their own... Does any of that make any sense to anyone? I hope so.. I would like to be able to offer my long time posters and users of my site their own way to leave their unique mark on it by having their own profile be a "mini website" kind of thing. Any thoughts, or is there anything like this already out there?

SUG:
I would very much like to suggest (unless I have just not found how to do this) that the next version of TinyPortal include a "Title Link" option for custom blocks. So that a link can be placed in the text field and will then make the title of that block a clickable link when viewed on the page. I have tried finding out how this was done for the standard blocks included but as yet have not found a way to do it for my own custom blocks... perhaps I am just to tired and blurry eyed to find it right now so I thought I would suggest it be a feature in the next version just in case it actually is not possible to do right now aside from using the MySQL admin to adjust the titles manually. But that makes it where you can't use the block manager very much because each time you do you have to re-make the linked titles in the MySQL admin... Anyway just a suggestion for an additional field in the Block Creation/editing page.

Very much love the TinyPortal system and looking forward to what may come in the next version! Heading to the support section now to post a few questions about issues I am having. Thanks again TinyPortal folks for the base files and for the additions that have already been made for them!

Wanted to add that if anyone else thinks they would like this feature please do take the time to say so with a post here so that anyone who might take on such a task would know it is something more then one person will make use of... might help to get it made... thanks again and still hoping for someone to take on the above if they can at all. :)

All the best,

You can use html in the block title.. so you should be able to change the link by putting html <a href="www.yousite.com">your title here</a>  in the title.. i have not tried this but i know it parses html in there  ;)

About the other thing.. i know that there is something called a custom block.. but i never investigated.. but i think this block can be changed by users.. maybe it can be made so only the user of the profile can change the block showing..

Just trying to help  ;)

Thanks very much for the posting. I have tried using html in the title and it didn't parse it properly when I did. I could enter it in the MySQL database and it would work fine but for some reason it would not take the a href in the title and such... I will check it out again and go through more testing though just to be certain.

The other thing I have looked and looked but can't find a way to set up blocks specific to user... can make them show specific to the profile page easy enough but making them for each user would require me making over 350 seperate blocks just to give each user one single block.. was hoping there would be a way to do it without having to do it that way. So thought having a Profile block set to just be a per/user permission kind of thing from the outset would be easier to do.. so it would not use up database if the user never created it...

Again though I very much appreciate the time taken to offer your reply and I will for sure look into the naming of the new block again just to be certain I checked every method... hmm maybe BBCode would work I dont think I tried that... All the best,
