Where would I go to edit and add new message icons? I know where to load the .gif's but add the names that appear onthe posting screen?

That is a forum question, and forum questions you get the answers on SMF forums as its their support part.
But if you do a little search in here, i think there are a thread about this somehwere, although VERY old by now.
