Title: Make Front Page Taller
Post by: Tbar on May 10, 2007, 07:42:06 PM
Nice portal system :)

Basic root question is how to make the front portal page 'taller'. I have much more articles to display then the portal will show .. must be setting someplace??

Noob Questions Please. Any response appreciated, I know noob users are a pain :) Thank you for helping out..

1) Just installed all this .. very ez thank you. Latest 1.1.6 and TP .9.8

2) The Theme I'm using is Babylon. I'm confused on what themes TP supports, as I understand it supports all theme but some functions or features would not be supported if not using a TP supported theme. I think Babylon is one that is supported by TP .. true/false?

3) Rooted thrugh Admin till I'm blind .. can't actually find the area or feature I'm looking for which might be something like: How many articles to display on portal page..

I have many more articles than will display on the front page. So I'm thinking that I probably don't understand the blocks. I thought I understood so I deleted the demo's .. and probably should have studied them more before I did.

Types of blocks for the portal page, lets see if I got this right:

> portal features - how many portal features can you have and how many can you display? Only ONE?
> articles - mostly portal? Can be displayed on front page .. or linked to as a separate page correct??
> left block  - portal and forum
> right block - portal and forum
> center block - for the forums only ??

What I want is about 8 -10 articles plus the 'feature' on the front portal page .. but, I can't seem to get more than four articles on the front page.

Example forums would be great if you can steer me in the right direction..

Noob's are not a pain, we all start there and take a while to learn many things.

Tiny Portal Themes can be found in the download section of this site also check the theme boards. There are many to choose from.

Did you check in the tiny portal area, manage settings and look at the front page settings?

if you look around in there you may find some answers that you are looking for on what you can and cannot show  ;)

I've looked until I'm blind .. :(

With the theme I'm using.. can't I get a dozen or unlimited number of articles to display on the portal page?

Babylon is not the only theme that supports Tiny Portal, that theme along with the SMF default theme work with it. However there are many other themes to choose from.

Are you wanting to show the entire article on the front page?

Also check the themes boards for more themes.

OK.. lol .. here .. go look at this mess :)
I've been playing around .. once I understand what I'm really doing .. I'll decide upon a theme .. put in the proper content etc. Theme is not a primary concern right now other than to know if the theme I'm using has total support with TP.. or better stated that all TP features, etc will work with that theme.

www.tbar.com/forum/ (http://www.tbar.com/forum/)

I have a very short "Feature" as a welcome.

Then there are 4 'articles'. ? Anyway that is what I entered them as but I'm really confused about front page blocks.

As a final product what I want (not sure if it can be done now) is as follows:

Feature Block with the feature article. Probable the current welcome or something nicer.

Product and Services Block with the product and services articles contained within.

Latest forum post Block .. with the last 4-6 posts. I assume I can do this by board/category.. ie Cat 1 latest post, Cat 2 latest post, cat 3 lastest post.

4th Block RSS News Articles.

Currently I use IPB latest stuff, but I'm just not happy with the portal I feel it really lacks. I'm told that SFM with TP can handle multiple portals .. and in the long run that is what I'm going for.  If you had a site for the military in general with forums covering everything .. It might be nice to have a portal entrance  for : Navy, one for Army, one for Airforce and so forth that would concentrate on those particular branches .. with articles etc , yet uses a common forum base.

Right now Tiny Portal offers this for front page options:

Only forum-posts
Forum-posts and articles - sorted on date
Only articles
Featured article and front page blocks
Front page blocks
Go directly to forum index

The amount of articles that can be shown on the front page I am not sure of, someone else may be able to answer that.

The  next release of Tiny Portal will offer much more than what is has now. Perhaps Ichbin, Bloc or G6 can give more information on what your wanting when they get online.

You can have as many articles as you want on the frontpage. But you can't have multiple portals in one install of SMF. You could probably setup something to redirect users to different articles that would make it "appear" it was a different frontpage for different membergroups, but that is not something you can do out of the box with TinyPortal.

Getting more portals could mean having a "portal category" system. Articles, settings, blocks etc. have to have a "portal id" as well..so everything will be fetched according to which id is chosen. This way one can have multiple "portals", all with different frontpage/blocks/downloads etc. It will be using the same system files of course, but fetch different data-sets according to portal id.

Something like that will not surface in TP 1.0 though..more like TP 2.0 lol :)..it demands a total rewrite of everything - or at least much of the functions - and also require a super-admin section to steer it. Permissions would also have to be on per-portal basis.

Another question is..how useful will it be? If you are seeking multiple portals on different domains for example, then this isn't good, its still tied to that one installation of SMF. If you are looking at mini-sites within your own, then its more useful. assigning SMF board categories to each "portal" would also be desireable then I suspect.

I am not sure what you primary seek here though.
