Title: Download module question
Post by: maxnorris on March 23, 2007, 04:30:25 PM
Have a question about the downloads module.  (Might actually be a feature request, you tell me)

For files that are being hosted on my server, the download module works great, no complaints.

What I was wondering about is downloads that are hosted elsewhere.

I would like to be able to have the downloads manager handle files that aren't on my system.  If you hit the download button, instead of sending an empty file, it would transfer the browser to the download page of whatever site's handling the file. I can add a link to the site in the file's description, but the download button will try and send you a blank file.

Just for example, lets say the Java runtimes.  They get updated from time to time, and I don't want to host them and worry about remembering to update them.  (Plus, I don't want it to bite me on the butt hosting someone else's works, etc etc)  What I'd like to be able to do is enter a download entry with description and all that, but when you hit the download button, it'll send you to the download page on another site that's actually handling that program.

Is that sort of thing possible?  I know I could create an article and list that sort of stuff, but I'd really like to keep all the files together for sake of consistancy, whether or not it's hosted on my own system.

Thanks for any input

(Edit:  Doh, probably should have posted this in the Modules subforum)

This has already been suggested. All suggestions should be posted in the suggestions board. :)

Yes, I would like to have this feature, too! (I just wanted to post the same suggestion)

I would like to have another feature, too. I would be happy to have a block to show the downloads from just one category.

I would be nice to create subcategories in the downloads module.

You can already have subcategories under the main categories.

I didn't find the option because I misunderstood the German translation.

Now I found it. Thank you for the answer.
