I have looked in my Server Settings, my Features and Options, my Posts and Topics and have not found where the settings are for the guests but.
I have made it so guests can browse the forum, then i made all boards hidden from guest except for my newly added guest zone board for guests. How do I turn on the option to let guests post? ???
Thanks
Brianjw
Brian, in the admin section, at the left side, find permissions, then choose guests. You can allow them to post and any number of things.
Look under members, then permissions, then guest
Great thanks :D
could this have been done so guest can still view all of the forum but only post inside one board ? ::) :o
I am not certan. You can do it by board, but if you do not allow guest access to a certain then they will not be able to even see t.
Your right.. i actually think that i would need a mod for it.. aloow to see but not to post.. anyway thanks for the answer ;)
You can set the permission by Board. We have a Guest Area. But they can't post anywhere else in the forums.
I think it can be done by permission per board. In other words change a board from global to local. Very time consuming to do it that way though. I once had it set that way on my forum.
We posted the same thing at the same time. 8)
I don't think its that difficult. No more so than some of the mods and hacks we do. It's a matter of a few buttons to press.
You might want to look at:
Generate Reports (Forum Maint).. that gives an overall view of permissions.
Nobody has even posted as a guest yet on my site.
[edit] lol... we did :D
Nor did they mine. But the shoutbox is different, they will filled it up with links.
Ah.. I don't allow guest shouts. and calling the Guest Board.. Guest Book, Guestbook is asking for spam.
Mines called Guest Area.. the first hint of fishey business.. I'm locking it down again.
If nobody uses it.. then theres no point in really having it.
hmm reading this and thinking more about it i came to the conclusion that if someone has something to say that is worth reading they will register and say it.. if that makes any sense :coolsmiley:
and since i already have a guestbook then maybe i dont need a guest board afterall  Thanks anyway ;)
I only allow guest shouts because sometimes someone from another site that I have visited will post a 'hello'. Brian did when he visited and I knew it was him because he sign his name.
I'm reading this and thinking... I really don't need a guest area. And I don't need people to just say "Hello". They can email me for that.

I have a guestbook and a guest board, but no one uses either really :( oh well!

I agree, i dont think i want to have an open forum to just collect a lot of spam or blabbering.
If they register at my site they want something i eather have, or to get help with their forums or just tell about the day.
I dont have all that many members posting, but i do see my members logging in quite often :)
Skhilled, Grumpy, Oliver, Lesmond, Shadow Queen and Edwin have posted a lot about normal life and gaming :) Quite fun reading there. But i think if a member take their time to register, they also read or want to use the content i have, nit just blabber away :)
I guess when you own and run a forum yourself as all of us do or we wouldn't be here, it is hard to keep up a regular schedule on someones else's forum. What we all want, I think, are members who are not web masters, just regular people surfing the web for fun and information.
I had hoped that my type of role playing would catch on but it hasn't. :(

It's not that it didn't catch on.. How many people actually know the forum even exists?
The other problem... Theres a million similar forums to mine, yours and most other peoples here.
When I started my website.. I just wanted a site, no forum. Just a home for my little project. I was happy enough with MySpace.
The forum was an accident of sorts... and now I've grown attached to it, I want to see it do well.
I never expect it to have thousands of members... as much as I'd like it to. We get plenty of hits though.
YAY.... Post #100 ;D
You are growing in Zetan :coolsmiley:
Can you set permission so guests can see forum structure entirely but NOT enter or read them like in the good old phpnuke/phpbb days?

There is a board password protection mod on SMF Mods. I am not sure if there is anything else related to it :D
Thanks Brianjw,
Zetan is a good person and knows his stuff! He's been helping me along with my site.
