Title: TP SMF Gallery
Post by: majo on February 05, 2007, 10:00:24 PM
I have smf 111 and 0.97 TP  but would like to also add Gallery

First should i go with other gallery then the one from smf (lite) for example Coppermine ?

Now i am not that bad at adding, removing, finding php code but i have troubles installing mods under different themes then "default"

Could somebody tell me how to install gallery ( lite ) or some other like ( coppermine ) and also give me some explanation about mods?

And please don't send me that link from ( SMF) "how to" install mods on different them because that thing was written 2y ago + half of it i don't understand what the author wanted to say.

I appreciatet your help

i need to install paid subscription next but if i  find the way "how to" install gallery then i am sure i can do other mods by my self.

Im using SMF gallery light on my forum, and im very pleased with it.
I used to have coppermine, but got tired of things as soon as i had to update SMF or Coppermine, it was a hassle with the bridge every time i had to so something.
So IMHO i would use SMF Gallery lite if I were you.

Easy to install, easy to maintain as it uses all SMF settings and member database

Easy install = use SMF packagemanager and instal as any other mod

You dont have to make any changes to the other themes, exept add a button to it if you dont have a site map block made.
Look at my site if you like to see it, i have all paid themes installd there, and i have never done any modifications to them exept a button until i made my frontpage with the links to it instead

Do you mean add a button up with the others that point to the gallery ?
If thats what you mean, just do a little search in the forum here and you find all the answers you need, i have even posted the code needed in one post just the other day :)

Are you talking about the fact that the Gallery link doesn't show up in the Admin Control Panel for configuring it?  If so, the reason this happens is because the theme you are using has its own Modifications.english.php file in the <themedir>/languages directory.

Example:
/somefiledir/yourforumdir/Themes/yourtheme/languages/Modifications.english.php

It overrides the DEFAULT theme's file (which causes all kinds of issues with any mods that need to have their own text strings added, they add them to the default theme since they cannot know how many themes you will have installed).  My opinion is SMF handles this in the wrong fashion, but be it as it may, there is a solution.  That solution should be on the minds of all Theme builders as well, since they can easily prevent the problem with a bit of foresight.

- Go to your theme's "languages" directory (not the default theme languages directory).
- Edit the Modifications.english.php file there.
- At the begining of the file, the line just after the openning php tag (<?php), add the following:

include_once($settings['default_theme_dir']."/languages/Modifications.english.php");

This will load all the text strings from the default theme first, then if your "theme of choice" has modifications to some of those existing strings, they get taken care of.  This allows all the text strings that various mods (like SMF Gallery for example) needed to add to the default theme's Modifications.english.php file.

The alternative is that the admin has to copy all the text strings for various mods that got added to the default theme's Modifications.english.php file to each and every theme they have installed on their site.  And that would have to be done every time you add a mod, or a theme that has its own Modifications.english.php file.

Note to Theme designers:
If you create your own Modifications.english.php file for your theme, you might consider putting the line in yourself ahead of time, as a "user friendly" gesture.  :)

Haha! It's funny you bring this up Thurnok. I was just speaking with the SMF team tonight about it because I experienced it on Brianjw's site when viewing a custom theme.... Hopefully they will agree. :D

Thanks for the replay, i was playing my self little bit with the theme and found in index.template.php  my self to edit theme, now it worked when i was at school , now i am home and for some odd reason 3 gifs on "stats" changed the url  from /themes/my_theme/images/gifs to
root ?

I don't know why, i even backup the index template and still nada :)

Il try to reapply status block

anyways u 3 have good idea!!!! i think you should work with SMF together and learn me on php more :)

although i am taking java classes :) i might figure out something ? lol

@IchBin - hehe.. I've brought this up before.. a long time back.  In fact, when I first installed the Enterprise theme.

What happens:
SMF sees there is a Modifications.english.php file in the current theme, and skips loading the Modifications.english.php file from the default theme.

What should happen in my opinion:
SMF should load the Modifications.english.php file from the default theme, and then load the current theme's Modifications.english.php file.

In actuality, it should be Modifiction.<selected language>.php, but for conversational purposes, I guess you get what I mean.. heh

i mean i dont want to compare the forums or something but "most" cms's and forums are differently configured on the theme part , where you can copy paste folder into /themes/ and change the settings from config setup on admin screens. What i do imagine SMF could do something similar to integrate themes with mods together. See such SMF i would call like SMF Pro and sell it 10$ , meaning put it as download for 10$. Where other SMF Lite would be free.

Just suggestion from bussiness prospective.

Thurnok, totally agreed on the Modifications.xxx issue. I hope we can correct this for the next major SMF release, as its a bit limiting.

Although its as easy as just copying whatever is in default/Modifications.xxx to  current theme Modifications.xx - and keeping what theme needs of course - it will mean you don't have to worry about it. And Theme designers do not have to worry about it. :)

Great post even as it has not been used in a while.  How do you add a button for gallery?

johnyskd, you seem to have a problem.. We do have some of the answers, and we repeat them often enough.
There is a guide to adding buttons in the Docs section.

Also adding a button to the SMF Gallery is no where near what we support on this site, i thouigh i read the url to be tinyportal and not SMF or SMF Gallery, but i may be wrong  ;)
