Was just wondering about this.  Been trying to set up a message board for a guild and when I installed a mod, it crashed the board.  So I had to unistall everything because I didn't have a backup.

There is an option through the SMF admin ( Maintenance-> Forum Maintenance-> Backup Database) or you can do the same (and better) if you have access to a tool like phpmyadmin. I use the last option and the restore is a very easy proccess. Before you install any mod you should also make a backup of the files the mod is going to edit.

I always have a full folder backup of the forum and a copy of the database created in PhpMyAdmin which all I need to do is rename if things go pear shaped. I can restore the forum to it's full glory in a matter of seconds.
Similary when upgrading I perform a full upgrade on the folder copy and database copy first then when it is working correctly I just rename the originals (usually just ad a ~ to the end of the name) then rename the newly upgraded folder and DB to my forum folder name. A simple edit of settings.php will then have the forum upgraded and working in a matter of seconds.

i need to make a restore but am having trouble can you explain it in simpler steps. Im not sure if im missing somthing.

Did you done a FULL backup on your forum?

If you didn't do a full backup on your forum.

You can do just create a new forum and use the same database if you didn't do the backup before that mod crash your forum.
