I have been fiddling in this area and it appears that with the 'Forum only' selected the only posts shown are from the first board and the number to show is the number per page. What I mean is that if set to 8 they display many more than 8, 56 in total paginated to 7 pages with 8 per page.
With posts and articles - sorted on date, the number to show is the total number shown, i.e. one page with 8, but still only from the first board selected.
