Title: maybe one of you know
Post by: rbh on December 20, 2006, 09:16:56 PM
is there a utility out there that will tell you what might be associated with a file that is preventing it from being renamed or deleted at that time? i know the steps to deleting a file that's being a pain, but i thought it would be handy to have a utility that would tell you that file is being used by "BLANK" and cannot be renamed or deleted. as an example, i tried to delete an iso the other day and it said it was being used by another application. i rebooted, killed processes and it still was being used. it was driving me nuts and rather then booting into safe mode or opening a command window and killing explorer process then manually deleting the file with the command shell i was determined to find what it was hijacked by. well, after some digging i could have slapped myself because i had it mounted in alcohol 120%. :o

anyways, just curious if there might be a utility that i could have just clicked and it would have told me, kinda like those that tell you what the processes are for when you hit control alt delete and see all that crap running.

FileMon (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/filemon.mspx) (RegMon and FileMon are some good utils) --- now both replaced by ProcessMon (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/processmonitor.mspx).

--- [EDIT] ---
sorry.. forgot to add the links.. hehe

You might want the whole suit of SysInternals - they are good - here's main link:

I've been tied up with other stuff - plus Xmas getting near, so been pretty busy.  I hope to get it wrapped up after the holidays.

I do plan to get it knocked out tho.. a few people waiting for it.. hehe
