Custom Avatars

I was wondering if there was a way in SMF to provide people with a custom avatar.  I wanted to set up something for our sponsors and others who have contributed to our site but not let anybody else be able to get them.

How could I do this?

I was thinking setting up a specific membersgroup but I can't seem to figure out how to make a user an exclusive user of a specific avatar.

Would it be out of line to ftp the avatars to a private folder, and then use your admin priveleges to add it to each members profile?

As the forum Admin, you can change any members profile info.
So create a folder on your server named something like "SPavatars"
Then up-load the avatar images to the folder.
Then you can 'choose' the avatar you want for those special members.
By modifying their profile.

This is only one idea, there may be more.
