Title: TP install good, loads blank page
Post by: Creedon on May 05, 2007, 04:36:04 PM
I have read and probably re-read the problems that some are getting on the install for TP 098, and unfortunately mine i can not figure out.  I am getting a Blank page when i try to access this forum.

I successfully installed SMF, ran fine, couldn't do the automatic install of TP so i went ahead and did a manual install.  Had problems, so i wiped the files and reinstalled SMF.

Ensured all files were 777.

Installed Manual TP install and followed the SMF file editing to as close of exact as i interpreted.

Ran the manual_tp_install.php

    * Upshrink table exists
    * Settings table exists
          o Updated version to 098
    * Blocks table exists
          o Changed pos in blocks table
          o Changed pos in blocks table
    * Variables table exists
          o Changed value5 in variables table
    * Articles table exists
          o Updated body in articles table
    * DL manager table exists
    * Shoutbox table exists

TinyPortalÃ,´s table structure is now installed/updated.
Thank you for trying out TinyPortal.
_______________________

Deleted the Manual_tp_install.php

And attempted load the site and it gave me the blank page.

So, i went and went back and ensured all my code was correct (with the limited knowledge on it i have), found a couple errors, changed them appropriately and still a blank page.

Any help or incite would be outstanding, thank you!

When you did the install of TP. did you do all the edits manually to the SMF files according to this mod instruction ?
http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=14195

Also, did you upload all the files from the manual TP package through FTP ?

Yes i did the edits in accordance to "Mod instructions for TP 0.9.8 and SMF 1.1 - 1.1.2" and yes i also uploaded them with an FTP

Can you give us a link to your site please.
There is no reason for your site to not show up if you are sure you have followed the install guide and uploaded the files.

Well its probably having problems just due to the fact i really don't know what i am doing other than what instructions tell me.  So ya, im a newbie at this stuff.

Having the same problem. What was the solution?

Thanks
Title: Re: TP install good, loads blank page
Post by: G6Cad on May 06, 2007, 04:40:01 PM
The solution was broken files during his upload.
I replaced the files with new ones and it worked fine after that

Use filezilla and in the settings, set the files to transfer on auto and you will be good

When you do the install manually, try a diffrent FTP program like FileZilla. Can be downloaded for free on filezilla.com and in the settings of filezilla, set the transfer to transfer the files on AUTO, that way the files will be uploaded as complete files and not broken.
Many FTP programs have that part set to binary, and when another filetyp gets in que, the file will be skipped or broken.

I am also having CHRONIC problems with slow load times and at work, I too get a blank page after a really long load time.

I am running SMF 1.1.3 and TP 0.98. I was able to use the package installer on SMF 1.1.2 and TP 0.98 and then upgraded to 1.1.3.

I am attaching my index.php file for G6 to look at if she will.

The funny thing is that this also happens at night at my home computer (a blank page, timeout, or a dialog box pops up wanting me to save my index.php file). It seems to happen between 8pm and 10pm most nights. Other members seem to be able to access the site though...but not me.

I called my webhoster...he said no problem on their side and did a tracert and said it was my ISP. I called my ISP and they said nothing wrong there, it was my NORTON. They had me restart my computer in safe mode with network support and I was able to load the page then. So I am TOTALLY confused as to what my problem is...other than I have a website I can access only a few hours a day. Later that night I found out I could access the forum part and the admin part, but not the SMF gallery or the Home page. STRANGE, very STRANGE.

Here is my info:  Website:   http://www.razorbiker.com/website
                       SMF  1.1.3
                       Tiny Portal 0.98

So I am getting the runaround by everyone it seems and all I want is to be able to access my site at the very least at HOME (work computer is not a big deal)...but I have NO IDEA where to place the blame....any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,

Wally

Im sure this have nothing to do with SMF or TP, rather a host issue.
What confirm my thought is that you say it's between the same time every night, a lot of shared hosting services have the same issues with slow browsing and load time as a lot of people connect to the sites on the host at the same time.
We tend to call it "overselling" of accounts on one server
So i think you eather have to contact your host about this, or change hosting company.
Title: Re: TP install good, loads blank page
Post by: rumboogy on July 24, 2007, 03:11:05 PM
Thanks G6...I will probably really push the issue now. It was just strange though I could access some pages and also access it in safe mode...strange. Computers are our friends...yeah right!

Thanks for the reply.

At the risk of being annoying (probably more than risk)...I believe now it is a database problem. I can access a separate NON-database gallery I have on this server with no problems whatsoever...or other files on that server without any problems...it has to be database...

Is it possible that the database is corrupt and causes intermittent problems? Could it still be on the webhosters side?

Again...here is a gallery that loads perfect and fast: http://www.razorbiker.com/raztest

But connecting to the database will not work from my work computer at all...and at home it is intermittent.

I am just really at a loss as to my options here.

OK...when I checked the databases...it gives me the option to check/repair...here is what I get when I do that...should I do a repair?

Here are all the files effected?

raz_gallery_pic             Warning
raz_log_floodcontrol   Warning
raz_log_online             Warning
raz_members             Warning
raz_sessions             Warning
raz_settings             Warning
raz_topics              Warning

Is it safe to try and repair these files?

Wally

You may also want to disable hostname lookups and see if that helps any.

Admin > Features and Options > Layout and Options > Disable Hostname lookups: check

Thank you IchBinâ„¢!!

I have changed that setting...so we'll see what happens.

However, one last bit of information.

Tonight (830pm) I tried to access the homepage again...it would not come up. I could still access the forum by typing in the DIRECT FORUM URL and it would work, but if I clicked on HOME, it would just give me a blank page or pop up a dialog box asking me to save the index.php file.

Now the strange part. Last week, my ISP told me he thought it was my Norton Antivirus. So he had me restart the computer in SAFE MODE with NETWORKING. He then asked me to navigate to the homepage...not a problem, pulled it right up.

After the homepage would not come up tonight, I restarted in safe mode and again, not a problem getting to the site...so I don't know WHAT is going on.

I hope your suggestion works and maybe the last bit of info I provided will help.

Thanks for helping.

Wally

And people wonder why I ask if they're running antivirus or firewall software when having wierd problems like this... lol If I were you I would use something that is not so bloated. Like AVG or Avast.
Title: Re: TP install good, loads blank page
Post by: rumboogy on July 25, 2007, 07:43:47 PM
So IchBinâ„¢!!...you have heard of "STRANGE" things happening...and can attribute those to AV sofware?

The guy did tell me that just UNINSTALLING Norton was not good enough...He suggested I call Norton and go through the process of REMOVING it totally from the computer.

I assume you agree with this strategy?

Which product do you recommend, AVAST or AVG and do you prefer the antivirus or internet security version?

Thanks for your insight...it has definitely been a learning experience.

Norton's actually has a page featuring their removal tool.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

There are lots of other pages about this issue as well:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=uninstall+norton+antivirus&btnG=Search

FWIW... I stopped using their products years ago, to much trouble and conflicts with other programs.

Also this note for anyone who might want an 'all-in-one' style utility:

Back about 2 to 2.5 years ago Microsoft came out with "Windows Live OneCare" in a Beta release and I ran the beta for several months and then bought the retail version.

It comes with a firewall, anti-virus, spyware screening and removal plus lots of other stuff, like a very good backup utility.
I like this product better than any other that I've ever used and I have used many of them, both free and paid.

The cost is a little on the high end at $50.00 per year, but that is offset somewhat because you can put it on up to 3 PC's, currently I'm running two so the cost is $25.00 for each.

Thanks... Ken.
Of course I have no interest in or connection with MS except as a consumer.

I stopped using Norton a long time ago too.. I use Sophos (http://www.sophos.com/), Zone Alarm, and am looking into NOD32 (http://www.eset.com/).
The company I work for provide Sophos free to it's staff.. Since it's latest upgrade, I've stopped using it because when it trys to update.. It hangs the whole computer.. Kills the stream and the mouse cursor will hardly even move.

NOD32 is what i have been using for some time now, and you never notice it's there.
It updates every day and you dont notice anything diffrent in the PC what so ever, not slowing down, not freezing the PC when it searches or updates, so i TRULY recomend NOD32 for antivirus.

I'd upgrade the RAM and get as much as I could afford. It saves your hard drives having to access quite so often, and the RAM is much faster than the HDD. Which is why more is better.
HDD sends data to the RAM.. RAM sends data to the CPU to be processed.

I got the same problem.

Everything loads up, I configure SMF and TP, but when I finished when I try to loads up the page without any user it just show up a blank page.

I read the solution, but the server works for 1 day with both thing installed.

Any ideas?

I try it as the post said.. and when I try to load up another link in the same site it load up:

But if it is just the plain http://colombiamug.com/foro/ it does't work,... so I had to put there an HTML to tell people that we are working on site..

The only real solution is to make sure you have all your files uploaded, and to make sure they are not corrupted. Use a ftp client like filezilla. Delete your old files, upload a new set and get SMF running normal. Then install TP. If you get a blank page, upload SMF files again and do the manual TP install.
