Title: Questions before install
Post by: jernatety on May 16, 2018, 05:21:58 PM
Hello. A few questions before/if I install.

I currently have a site which as a zillion child boards and leveraging a portal would make it look a lot cleaner for guests, as opposed to seeing all of the child boards since they can't collapse categories. I do plan on adding a zillion more childboards. I actually have to because it's a sports board and there's a lot of leagues and teams.

youthhockeyinfo.com

I'm running SMF 2.0.15 and have the following 34 mods installed.

1.External and NoFollow All Links   1.0.0
2.Board Icons   1.0
3.Contact Page   4.0
4.Drop Guest Email Requirement In Posting   1.0.1
5.SMF Trader System   1.7
6.SMF Classifieds   4.0.13
7.SMF Post Prefix   2.0.3
8.Hide ip stuff for users   1.05
9.Child_boards_below_topics   1.0
10.Tidy Child Boards   2.0
11.AdSense Mod   1.0
12.ENotify   3.0
13.Separate Replies and Views Column   1.9.2
14.Yet Another Global Announcements Mod   2.7.5
15.SMF Articles   3.0.3a
16.More Spiders   1.2
17.Linked Words   1.0
18.Add Facebook Like, Tweet, and Google +1   1.0.3a
19.404 on Missing Topics/Boards   2.1
20.Share This Topic   4.1.2
21.Yarex 2 smiley set   2.0.0.1
22.EzPortal   3.5.2
23.Recent Topics On Board Index   1.03
24.SMF 2.0.15 Update   1.0
25.Optimus   1.9.7.3
26.Effectively Remove SMF Logo   2.0
27.PDF Tag   1.2
28.SMF Likes Plus   1.5
29.BBCode with style   1.5.1
30.Reply Button In Every Post   1.0
31.Advanced Recent Posts   1.1.1
32.Ohara YouTube Embed   1.2.9
33.reCAPTCHA for SMF   1.0.0
34.Responsive Curve

I'd like to know a few things, if they're possible if I install tinyportal.

1.Will Tinyportal work with everything I have, mod-wise?
2.Are tiny portal pages SEO friendly? I was testing out ezportal and found that theirs are not.
3.Are the blocks responsive or do they work with the SMF responsive curve mod? Again, the last portal I was using was not.
4.I have a mod called SMF classifieds, is there a block for that, if not is it easy to make, if it can be made?
5. Are there any known conflicts with tinyportal which might cause issues for me if I install it?

Hopefully everything will be ok, because I need to install something that works the way I need it to.

Hi, and welcome to TP support.

One thing that jumps out to me straight away, you can't have two portals installed at the same time, I see EzPortal in your mods list.

The other mods I haven't tested it with all those myself, but haven't had any reports from anyone else saying there's a problem.

The built in blocks are responsive, and custom blocks are responsive depending what content you have in them. That said, for the portal to be have responsively you have to be using a responsive theme, or default theme with the responsive curve mod installed.

SEO friendly, I doubt it to be honest.

I would strongly advise you try these things on a test site first, and see what works best for you.

Sorry about that! Forgot to delete it. There is no ezportal installed anymore. With respect to the responsive actions. If I have a 790x60 image banner in a block, you're saying that will scale down on a mobile, it won't stay the same size? With respect to seo friendly. Is the word tinyportal in the page links when a new page is generated?  Can you post an example of the tinyportal page url? I do use only the default theme with the responsive curve. Will the portal elements, (If I have the portal front page enabled) show up on the mobile? Or does that get ignored on the mobile?

Thank you

Would that be a adsense banner?  If yes then that shouldn't be a problem.  Other images or banners manually added to a custom block (By custom I mean any empty html, bbc, or php block) should resize fine as long as it's wrapped in the right code.

A page url example, something like thee on one of my sites.  You won't see Tinyportal mentioned in the links.  ;)

If the banner is in a container and you have @media it will resize, tinyportal won't alter that logic.

https://siteurl/index.php?page=3, is a example for a article.

https://siteurl/index.php?action=tpmod;dl is for downloads.

SEO friendly isn't really that much of a thing, but its a pretty standard and simple url used.

Thank you

TinyPortal is responsive on all devices and doesn't effect the responsiveness of the forum. This includes the frontpage and any other section.

Just to point out to jernatety.  The examples I gave above are also articles, but used the optional Query title, which I tend to use.

So this article could either be

With Query title,    https://guitaristguild.com/index.php?page=Ampeg-SVX-2

Without Query title, https://guitaristguild.com/index.php?page=25

Thank you for replies, both answered what I am asking, so thanks to both of you.

So I guess my only response would be in regard to the responsive images. I do know that adsense now has responsive ads so that's great, no issues there. At some point I will want to include adsense on my site.

For now though it would be photoshop made ads but they'll have the same size restrictions as adsense ads. If I wanted to sell a space to somebody looking to advertise hockey clinics for instance. If I gave them a leaderboard 728x90 spot on top center. That looks fine on a website on a computer but on a mobile device will it scale down and fit or do I have to add responsive CSS to one of the css files and then use html tags to call the responsive CSS to the image that's in the top center block?

You will need to add css as it wouldn't scale.

<style>
.leaderboard { width: 728px; height: 90px; }
@media(max-width: 750px) { .leaderboard { width: 364px; height: 45px; } }
</style>

Something like that would work.

Ok sounds good. Would the css get added to the SMF index.css or one of the tinyportal css files?

I don't think it really matters, if you wanted it to still work if you uninstalled TinyPotal then the SMF responsive.css file would be a good place. I think that's what the core responsive mod adds.

I edited your post as I had put the wrong @media directive which you had quoted.

Ok, I'm going to try it out probably tomorrow when I have time to tinker around a bit. Thanks for your help.

I think I just experienced information overload. I installed the mod but quickly uninstalled it. I figured after install there would be an on/off switch so that I could arrange everything off before I turned it on. But it was already on and I couldn't figure out getting everything arranged or where I wanted to put everything. Is there a default off switch?

There isn't a single switch as such to turn off the portal, but everything you see has permissions, or setting to manipulate as required.  What you saw was it installed in its default state, letting you know it's there and working.

Without knowing exactly what you want out of the portal it's a bit tricky to advise.  Each block for example has its own permissions, so if you uncheck them only you will see the block while you play around with it.  Panels will only show if they contain a visible block or blocks.

The portal is extremely powerful, and can do so much, but can be a bit overwhelming at the same time, hence why I mentioned trying these things on a test site first.  Perhaps give us some idea what you're trying to do with it, and we'll try and guide you through.  Please don't give up straight away without giving it a good go.  ;)

Ultimately, right now I want to put up advertisements for hockey tournaments and clinics. I will make the images in photoshop. I went to your gardening site and like the 4 block advertisements across the top that you have. I also switched from your custom theme to the default theme and everything looked really smooth on my mobile phone. The most important interest is that everything works smoothly and responsive on mobile. All of your ads scale correctly when viewed on the mobile and back on the computer.

Ok, so are you going to require a home page made up of blocks and panels, or just go straight to forum index and add a block across the top or bottom etc.

The code I used in that row of ads is just some code I grabbed off the web, and added it to a Upper html/javascript block. I'm still looking for a better one to be honest, but it works ok for my needs.

Theme, I only have one theme on there, it's the Default them Curve with the responsive curve mod installed.

Ok, so what do I need to do immediately after TP is successfully installed? I know I have to go to permissions but where are they in the TP admin interface so that the front page doesn't show except for me until it's ready?

Not sure that exact scenario is possible.  But there might be a way you could do similar with a bit of guesswork.

You'll be able to set up upper, lower, and side blocks as desired without anyone else seeing them.  Content for the middle of page will need adding afterwards to complete the front page.

First step after install would be,  TP Admin > Frontpage > What to display on frontpage:  Set this to "Go directly to forum index".

Second.  TP Admin > Blocks.  Turn off all active blocks by clicking the green squares seen on that page. All you and your members will see is the forum.

Then you can add blocks as desired, albeit only top, upper, lower, bottom, and left and right blocks can be used while the "Go directly to forum index" Each block you add has it's own permissions, so you need to uncheck them all so only you as admin can see them.

What if I put the forum in maintenance mode? Do the install and make the modifications at night and get everything squared away. Is that possible?

Ahh yes, you can do that as tino said, I must have misunderstood your original question, and thought you just wanted to keep the forum going, and hide just the front page while you worked on it.

Obviously if you're going to build it behind closed doors then you can disregard my instructions given earlier, and just add remove blocks as required after install.   ;)

So.... Really weird thing happens after install.

First, I installed during maintenance. Got everything configured the way I wanted. Everything looked awesome on both computer and mobile. However, on the mobile when I tap to read a topic, the topic isn't responsive. You have to slide to the left to read everything. Thought that was weird so I checked again starting from scratch. Again all of the tinyportal aesthetics and forum looked great on the mobile but when I tap to open a post it's not responsive.

So I uninstalled again. After uninstall the topics/posts are responsive again on the mobile. Hopefully somebody else experienced this and there's a fix?

Is this just with the standard SMF theme and the responsive mod?

Does it do the same on this site if you choose that theme?

Do you have any sidebars enabled? If you do what is in them?

I assume you've disabled it on your site currently?

Is this just with the standard SMF theme and the responsive mod? - Yes default theme "Curve" with responsive curve mod

Does it do the same on this site if you choose that theme? No, when I change the theme on this site on my mobile and tap to open a topic it's responsive.

Do you have any sidebars enabled? If you do what is in them? Yes, left (User block), and Right (Stats Block). That's all nothing else. Everything with the portal works fine. It's when I tap to open a topic, it's not responsive it's full size. But when I uninstall the mod it goes back to working fine, the topic is responsive.

I assume you've disabled it on your site currently? Yes, uninstalled because I don't know how to disable any other way.

If you can enable it, and not have it in maintenance mode then I can view it as a guest. Don't really need admin access unless you would rather no one else possibly see it.

If you want to leave it in maintenance mode then you can pm me a login and password on here and I'll log in to check.

And Chrome. I don't have firefox on my phone and I'm assuming the majority of the people using my site are probably the same, 35 and over and use the default iPhone/Droid apps already installed. Which is chrome on just about every one.

Yup that one, it was breaking on a SMF post, so any content really. There wasn't any images or anything special in them tbf.

If you can break it also then I'll try when I'm back home on Sunday.

I can't break it, looks good to me, but. I only have a crappy windows phone. :-[ Also looks ok in responsive design mode in firefox, and window resizer in chrome.

Hi Lurkalot, it's only Chrome, the default browser on Android and iPhone.

Yep, hopefully tino can come up with something to sort that.  Thanks for reporting it though. We have a very small team of testers, so limited number and type of mobiles to test with.

Glad your sticking with it and giving it a good go instead of giving up. You'll soon find your way around it, even if a bit daunting to start with. Thank you.  ;)

It's awesome and I was 98% ready to turn maintenance off before I tapped a topic to read and thats when I saw it. Glad I did because my audience is middle aged and not very adept with their phones. It's pretty much whatever is installed app-wise is what gets used. I'd rather not have to tell them to install Firefox or another browser to use the site on mobile. They'll just give up and not come back.

Actually, I realise you don't have to portal active atm, but could you point me to a specific post where the problem shows up..  By pm if you prefer.

Portal isn't on, but it's any post when I do have it on. It's not just one. Same deal with your test site I went to that and clicked on a post and and the post message area is all normal size, not responsive, you have to slide over to see everything. Doesn't do it when I change your current tinyportal site to default theme though.

I can see the YouTube one isn't but that's due to the video not being mobile friendly. All other posts on that test site under chrome are ok for me.

I assume it's not the same for you so it must be the resolution under chrome on your mobile

I don't see any issues on my phone with the test site on Chrome

So, if I'm understanding correctly, it sounds like it's not Chrome in general, its just chrome on my phone?
Title: Re: Questions before install
Post by: jernatety on May 19, 2018, 12:42:00 PM
So, I went here as an example, (link below). Keep in mind, this happens with every topic, not just one. I used chrome on my Samsung S8, my wifes Samsung S9, my sons iPhone 6 and my other sons iPhone 6+.

http://www.youthhockeyinfo.com/index.php/topic,19.msg382/topicseen.html#new

They all do the same thing. The entire topic is not responsive. It's normal pc view size. I have to slide to the left 3-4 times to see the entire thread.

With that being said, I installed firefox app on all 4 phones. The entire site works fine on mobile.

I'm keeping this installed and not in maintenance mode so you guys can check it out. I'll post a notice on my socials that viewing topics is currently screwed up in chrome on mobile.

I was just referring to the test site, I can see it broken on your site. There is something in there causing the issue which isn't on this site or the test site.

I would guess a add on and tinyportal are conflicting. I notice it's trying to load the ezportal css so that might of left something behind when it uninstalled.

It shows the exact same problem using Chrome on the desktop with a narrow screen...

By the way: the problem goes away when you collapse the quick reply box. Look for the problem in the css there...
Title: Re: Questions before install

It's probably the recaptcha causing it then.

Don't think so: when I switch to Curve on the TP site and activate the Quick reply to default on in my profile it  also breaks here.

I suspect this is a 'omission' in Responsive Curve. Should be fixabe though...
Title: Re: Questions before install
Post by: jernatety on May 19, 2018, 02:17:59 PM
Ok, so....

This only happens when TP is installed. It didn't happen before or after ezportal either. If I remove TP now, the problem goes away.

However..... Everything works fine in Firefox on the phone. No problems at all.

I'll set up a site to test this later, it's obviously some combination which TinyPortal has caused with responsive curve.

looking at http://www.youthhockeyinfo.com/index.php/topic,19.msg382/topicseen.html#new in firefox the recaptcha does not seem to be responsive, that may be part of the issue showing in chrome.
Title: Re: Questions before install

You guys know better than I so I'm not going to try and make any suggestions for firefox. I'll just mention the recaptcha looks fine in firefox on my phone. Again, I don't know what I'm looking for there just thought I'd let you know. It's almost like Chrome doesn't like something and breaks the site on mobile but Firefox doesn't care and it looks fine.
Title: Re: Questions before install

Adding the following to responsive.css fixes the issue on my test install.

#quickreplybox
{
     max-width: 90vw;
}

I'm not sure what is causing this to have issues yet, but its the quick reply box on my install that breaks everything.

I can't add the reCaptcha mod to see if that also causes a issue as it makes my site refuse to load with it active. I notice there is a new version released which you should update to. 1.0.1.

Ok, I don't know if you're asking for me to check, if you are, it still looks the same in Chrome and still works in FF on mobile.

This was my test site. It's not available to the public.

If you apply that css in the responsive.css on your site it might sort the issue.

I added it to the end of the responsive.css. I ran the empty file cash routine too. But that didn't do anything. Still the same on Chrome. So strange, it only affects the topics when open.

Can you try a later version of the recaptcha mod?

Or just disabling it to see if that sorts the issue.

When you say to try a later version of reCAPTCHA, where would I find that? I'm using this mod reCAPTCHA for SMF -  https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1044

I turned the mod off, it automatically defaulted to the built in SMF visual verification, but nothing changed in CHROME. Still broken only when a topic is open.

Your opening post says you're running 1.0.0 of that mod, the latest appears to be 1.0.1

There is something with the textbox or in that's quick reply which isn't the same here or on the test sites we've set up which causes the error.

If you turn off captcha completely, both SMF's built in and the recaptcha do we get anywhere?

Thanks for your patience with this, it'll get tracked down eventually.

I have no problem working with you guys to get this fixed. I turned off the mod, saved it. dumped cache. Tested and it's still the same thing on CHROME even with the default SMF visual verification. Nothing changes.

EDIT.....

Sorry, regarding the mod version. It is 1.0.1. After install it says 1.0.0 in the package manager. I don't know why but it is the latest version.

Both side bars off in CHROME, everything looks great in an open topic. No issues

So....

Turning off both side bars makes Chrome work fine.

I tried turning on the left side bar without right and the problem persists.

I turned left off and turned right on and the problem persists.

It appears to be with either sidebar on, the problem persists. With both off, the problem is resolved.

Ok, progress!

Now to find the fix...

I'll get back to you tomorrow as it's late-ish here in the UK.

I'm going to guess chrome is rendering the page with the two fixed widths of the side panels then moving them down making the text box window fill the old screen size. If that makes any sense at all!

I'm not sure what is causing this to have issues yet, but its the quick reply box on my install that breaks everything.

Changing to the following with the sidebars enabled seems to give more consistent results for me.

#quickReplyOptions
{
     max-width: 90vw;
     overflow: hidden;
}

I'm yet to find out what is breaking in chrome, although using a slightly older version removes the issue. So they have changed something with their rendering which Mozilla (FireFox) are yet to do.

Every one of the team posts has a google map embedded for the directions to the rink they play out of http://www.youthhockeyinfo.com/index.php/topic,76.0.html

It's an embedded iframe using html tags

Or you can enclose it in a div like we do with the embedded YouTube videos.
