I just want to make sure that I am understanding this correctly. The download manager will allow me to create different download categories, and to limit access to each different category based upon a set of permissions, that is linked directly to the various membergroups.

So, I could have dowloads separated into the following:

• Free Downloads
• Gold Member Downloads

And then make so that everybody can see and access the Free Downloads, but only those who belong to the Gold Member membergroup can see and access the downloads in the Gold Member section.

Is this correct? (I am really really hoping so!!!)

Yes, that is exactly how I made it. You set the permissions for each category just by ticking off which membergroups can see/access it. The downloads directory is protected by .htaccess, so you should be safe.
