In the theme settings the Users Online Today mod is not listed as supported and cannot be enabled. However the code for the mod has been added to the Boardindex.template but it is contained in a function requiring it to be enabled in the settings:

if(!empty($settings['use_usersonlinetoday']))

To help the member I have commented out the function, but that isn't a permanent bug fix.
