This has worked in the past, but since the upgrade to 9.7 the news posts on the front page no longer show for guests.
In the front page settings in the admin page I have it set to
"Allow guests to see news from the news board - even if guest are not allowed to see the board?" YES
www.the-rota.com
Have you also set what forum board to use as the news board in the settings ?
Yea, I have been using TP for about 8 months. Everything is set and it works fine when someone is logged in. Only problem is for guests.
does this feature use /Sources/news.php? I had several errors in my log on that file. Did a search on SMF and someone else had the same error in their log using SMF 1.1.
I did like him and just used the previous version of news.php from the 1.1 RC3 package. I haven't see the error since (knock on wood).

where did you get that news.php??
Like he says he got it from the RC3 package. if you still have a copy of smf 1-1-rc3 just unzip and look in the Sources folder. don't forget if you do use it backup the SMF1.1.1 first :)

ya but this stuff worked for me on 9.6..
Could you try adding a newsbox to one of your blocks, I have one set up in a center block at the top, then see if guest can see that
ya but that's not what i want.. i have news that's important and if they click the topic i want them to register..
That is not why I was asking, I just wanted to know if guest could see the news in a block, also some themes don't show the news

Take a look in your TinyPortal settings. Its very obvious where it says which boards you want to pull news from.
I've obviously missed something, as I see no news-board setting in the TP settings.
This is a screenshot of my TP settings page.

This is my front page settings:

The only reference to a news board is the setting to allow guests to see it or not. I still don't see where I set what board is classed as the news board.
"Show posts on the front page from:"
:o
Oh. I assumed the issue was setting a board specifically as a "news board", not simply which boards showed up on the front page.
I misunderstood the issue.
Actually, I think it needs to be labeled better so that it is more clear that it is news instead of just forum posts on the front page.
I agree it needs to be worded better.
The way it stands now, it reads like News items is completely different from Forum posts showing on the front page.
I mean... I could set it so posts from each and every one of my boards shows on the front page. The "Show forum-posts on front page from:" part of the settings isn't specific to news... it could be news, it could simply be showing automatically-updated forum content on your front page.
The "Allow guests to see news from the news board ..." part reads like there is a setting somewhere to create a board that is "tagged" in some way as a News board.
sorry to bring back up an old thread but I have the same problem
I have set a forum board NEWS which is used as the news block however guests can't see it while I have the option "Allow guests to see news from the news board - even if guest are not allowed to see the board?" marked and added NEWS to the "Show forum-posts on front page from:" list however guests can't view it while members can.
this is on tinyportal 0.98 and smf 1.1.3
If you can hold on for a bit, we are going to try and get an update out for TP 0.9.x that should fix some of these small issues.
