Title: Modified BlueSkies Theme upgrade....
Post by: GhostRider2110 on October 05, 2012, 08:12:08 PM

Link to my site: http://www.usscalemasters.org (http://www.usscalemasters.org)
SMF version: 1.1.16
TP version: 1.104
Default Forum Language: English
Theme name and version: Blueskies (color scheme modified)
Browser Name and Version: Latest Chrome/Firefox

Hi all, been a while since I posted, but still been lurking around at times.

My question is, is it possible, worth the trouble/expense to update the BlueSkies
theme to support the latest version of SMF and Tinyportal.

And, if so, is then someone out there willing to do it? help? etc...

I would like to move the forums up, but without the theme working properly I can't.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced..

Mitch,

Though the Blueskies theme was one of Bloc's best, it simply won't work for the latest version of SMF.  There are just too many changes for it to work.  Bloc is not doing much theme work at this time but Maxx is doing some work with some of his themes and Crip's themes for SMF 2.0 are excellent as well.  Of course, if Maxx were to try to attempt to upgrade this theme to SMF 2, he would have to talk it over with Bloc first.  Upgrading your Forum to SMF 2.02 is a good idea but, if I was you, I would first clone your live site to a test site before doing so though that is not really a necessity if you have a theme that you have found that you want to use.  In your case though, and having worked with you in the past, I think it would be a good idea for you to have a test bed.

I will see if I can get hold of Maxx and have him take a look at this topic to see what he thinks but you might want to join Crip's site and take a look at some of his themes as well.  Most of his themes are quite easy to change the color scheme for just about all of his new themes.  I commend you for wanting to upgrade your site to the latest versions of both SMF and TinyPortal as both versions in use on your site are getting quite dated.  Here is a link to Crip's site --> http://www.jpr62.com/theme/index.php?action=forum

Thanks Zar,

Already joined up on Crip's site... :)  Crip helped me out many times in the past as have you... Big thanks!!!..  I started looking at some of the theme to see.  As you can imagine, since the site is a club site, any change to layout can be a pain...  Some of the folks just can't take change like then... Shoot, have spent last several years getting them to use the site.. so a change in layout will really be fun to explain... HAHAHA...

Thanks.. Will also be looking forward to what Maxx has to say...

Maxx and I are both Admins over at Crip's site so I posted a private topic over there to both of them to take a look at this topic.  Give them a day or so to respond.  At the end of last month. Crip just removed a large quantity of his older themes from his demo site and his main site that people weren't using too much anymore.  H e does that once in a while if there doesn't seem to be much interest in them.  Some of those he removed were quite good though.  He'll be adding some new one though so it might be a good time to post a topic over there.  I just counted how many themes he removed last month and it came to 36 so you know he's planning on getting busy again. ;)

Hi Crip, nice to chat with you again!!!...

Yes, I am wanting to move the site to latest SMF/TP combo...  Or if there is something out there simular that I can modify the color scheme that would work as well.

I'm in the process of putting up a dev site to upgrade and test with.

I might could make a Similar looking 2.0 Theme , but it would take some time to create..
=> or with Bloc's permission update BlueSkies with Core Templates..?

Think I am going to try that one.  See if I can get the site upgrade to SMF 2x and latest TP with default theme... and go from there.. Should prove to be fun just doing that...  :2funny:   But as we said on the flight line, if it don't fit, force it .. if it breaks it was probably bad anyway...  :knuppel2:

hehe..

Mitch, make sure you backup the entire site and the database before doing this, or. better yet, setup that clone site.

Mitch,

What are you having trouble with, cloning the site?  It's not that difficult but there was a topic on SMF that I had referred someone to a while back which explained it pretty well.  If you need me to do so, I can try to locate that topic again.  LMK.

OK Mitch.

There is a topic from not too long ago where I helped someone clone their site.  It is here --> http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=33968.0

It couldn't hurt to have a look at that topic to see what we had to do but if you don't want to look at the whole topic, there is also a decent topic over at SMF on what to do. ==> http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=366951.0

LMK if any of that helps.

I have started looking and it seems like BigSky might be what I am looking for. Trying to see about changing the color scheme to match the old one some what, and I will need to replace the menu in the upper right.  A new dropdown  along the main menu would probably do.

My other main issue is I was using a mod to add fields to the profile, like First Name, Last name and some other membership info, like club member numbers etc... So I have to see how I might get those linked to the new fields or copied over without making the users do it...

baby steps hehehe.. --Mitch

Ok, I have the upgrade done.  I have installed Big Sky theme.  I can't seem to get the mini-calendar scirpt to work.  I started with the one from the old 1.x system.  I have pulled another off here and still can't get it to work.

Also I am getting errors in the logs:

http://usscalemasters.org/forumsmf2/index.php?
8: Undefined offset: 158
File: /home/usscalem/public_html/forumsmf2/Themes/default/TPortal.template.php (tp_below sub template - eval?)
Line: 159

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I should start a new thread for this, let me now.

Mitch, it looks pretty good so far.  As you are making changes, I suggest you keep track of them in a text file as you move along.  That way, if you have a problem, you can just move backwards through the list to fix the issues before continuing.

As for the mini-calendar, you're right.  The code for the old one you had only works with SMF 1.X and there have been quite a few changes in the way SMF 2.X works.  For the mini-calendar, try the code in this post in a php block --> http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?topic=32717.msg262975#msg262975

It should work for you without error.  Let me know when you add it so that I can see it.

Wow, how did I miss that one...  Oh well can't see the trees sometimes...

Have it installed if you want to check it out.

Question?  Is there any way to have the Events display a different date range than the holidays?  I would like to display like 365 days of the events and maybe only 30 of holidays.  If not, not a big deal I can just display events.

Again, thanks for all the help...

Hmmm, I think so but I am going to have to look at the code again to see what needs to be done.  Anyway, it looks good on your site so far.  Did you change anything in the code at all?  If so, post back and put the edited code in there with code tags so that I can see it.  I won't be able to look at it until either tonight or tomorrow though so no problem in posting back quickly.

* Program Parameters/Switches can be specified to change what is displayed and how.       *
*   If highlighting is turned on, only the types of entries which are selected to         *

Question?  Is there any way to have the Events display a different date range than the holidays?  I would like to display like 365 days of the events and maybe only 30 of holidays.  If not, not a big deal I can just display events.

Mitch, I don't know if this can be done without an almost complete rewrite of the code, adding some new variables and such.  However, theoretically, what you might be able to do is to setup 2 different calendars, one with 30 days of holidays and the other with 365 days of events.  You should be able to comment out the birthday and holiday calls from the event one and comment out the birthday and event calls from the holiday one.  I don't think the calls from one would interfere with the other one but if it did, it wouldn't be too difficult to go through the code and edit the variable names in the second one to be slightly different.  I would have to do some experimenting with that though before I would know for sure.  You might want to try this and see what happens and let me know.

Not a problem Zar, I appreciate you looking at it... I was wondering about that since it it looks like it uses the forum's calender functions to determine the time used for events.  I can leave holidays out all together.  Really as I think about it I remember I turned it off on the other site as displaying as many events as possible is better.  Let me know what you think of the scheme mods.

Thanks for the help..

Ran into another code block issue.  One I pulled over from the old 1.x system.  It s a Forum Stats and Info block.  I have the code listed below.  I have looked for an updated version here, but nothing found.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have a screen shot of what it is showing.

Thanks again..

Looks like the code is working, it's just that the language strings aren't the same between SMF1 and SMF2. It'll be a little tedious to fix, but you can do it. :) I don't have the time for it. Look in the code for any place that has a $txt variable in it. Figure out what it's supposed to say by looking at that text string in SMF1 language files. Then find out which variable says the same or similar in SMF2 and put that variable in place of it.

It's either that, or you just replace the $txt variables with the text that you need. Either way, it's a little bit of tedious work.

Thanks Ich.. Been a while since I chatted with you.. you have been a big help to me in the past!!!  Yes, I finally had time and started looking at the code.  Figured out just before you posted and got it fixed.  You beat me to posting that I found it!!!...

Still having to do a lot of cleanup...

Got a question for someone....  Ok, I have the clone up, and about 75% setup ....  When I have everything good to go, what is the best way to sync things up?

Upgrade the old then copy the modified files over?  Anyway to sync the old 1.x DB (adding any new posts) to the 2.x DB then I can just point to the new one to go live?  Advise appreciated...

Another question... At some point I hid, deleted, did something to the "Welcome" info in the upper right of the front page.. but only for guest...  When logged in, it is there.. If someone can point me to where to look again, greatly appreciated...

Never mind about this. Seems the I turned off the "Display Quick Login on every page" option that that is what controls that...  WOOT!!!...

Hi techguy,

Welcome to the TinyPortal Support Site.

Are you referring to a download link here on TinyPortal or are you referring to something on GhostRider2110's site?  I'm not sure what you are looking for.  If it has something to do with the TinyPortal site here, you should start your own topic rather than using GhostRider2110's.
